There's a term floating around "executive gamers". Basically what it means, is that people in the industry of creating and reviewing games are so surrounded by things they can and must play, that they lose some the feeling of worth.

Issues that may seem big to somebody who has picked up the game as the only one that can fit their budget or schedule, may be glossed over by someone that hasn't been forced to invest as much in the game.

For example instead of being disappointed by a game's faults being only 10 hours long, they are relieved that they're through it and can move on to other items in their pile of games.

Movies run ads with quotes like "if you're only going to see one movie this summer, make it .....", does games journalism need more of that kind of review?

"If gramma only gives you one game this birthday, make it ..." or "If you can only learn one RTS tech tree this year..."

I appreciate the way more reviewers are trying to impress their experiences rather than focus on scores. But I feel like more recently we've been getting the Homer Simpson Five thumbs up review, and the reality is most games aren't worth their hype.

I don't know, for me it's usually the other way around. Game journalists seem a lot more harsh on games that I end up loving. I also do not have a huge budget for games either.
