Something to tell you about Episode 170 [Archive]

Hey guys ... D Prager here gettin' at cha.

I have something to tell you ... and ... uhhh ... well... I'm kinda scared.

You see, the thing is ... Diggnation episode 170 is done and ready to roll ... but ...well ... it's not completely encoded for final release and ... well ... what I'm gettin' at is that it is going to come out late.

I don't think it will be out until maybe about midnight East coast time (could be earlier).

Who is to blame? Well, that's the other part of the reason I'm scared. If you want to blame anyone, please by all means blame Prager. Please have mercy on me though feel free to trash talk me. My sincerest apologies. It will be out soon though, that I do promise.

How the videos are being encoded ? I hope not on Macs ! And the h264 "hd" ones are looking worse than the upscaled large xvids. Come on, it isnt that hard to tweak the encoder. Its a video of two dudes on a sofa not an action movie !

Use mencoder on some big machines! h264 can be paralellized so a fat 2x2core Opteron Server @3Ghz will do the work very fast.

And anyway, why dont you leak a link to the ones that are already done ?
...XviD is damn fast, and the quality indicates that its not even 2pass encoded.

I mean the Video is a basic element in Internet Television, pay a Nerd to develop a encodig Cluster and some reasonably encoding Profiles.

i'm sure they're doing everything they can to speed up encoding, considering they have to encode m shows in n formats every day.

i would be curious for a rev3 gazette that shows off their rendering machine; i agree it would be a shame if it's just the mac pro they edit on! although it seems only diggnation is ever late, so whatever they are using is probably working out.

My guess is it's FCP Compressor and I think (from tekzilla screenshots) they use Qmaster to distribute load

This is only a minute before the newly expected release.

For all of those criticizing this,This is FREE! Beggars can't be choosers. Christ, this Rev3 thing was grown for us. This was huge in growing Internet TV. In my opinion a happy replacement for regular crap TV.

These responses are more happy and respective than earlier delays. That is good.

We will all be happy soon.

Remember. Be happy about the gifts you are given. At least recognize them. All is good after that.

I have to disagree, upscaled to 1920*1200 the large HD looks much better than large xvid..

While I agree some people do need to chill out, remember Revision3 still is not some kind of "gift" as you say, they are a business first and foremost, they're after ad revenue... You know those first couple of channels on TV, same thing too.

i agree, late episodes can't go over well with the sponsors who actually do pay money for these episodes.

I wasnt actually pissed, but it was unpleasant.

I just think Rev3 should pay more attention to the medium used to deliver the content. A lot is tolerable in many aspects, and in comparison to conventional Broadcast it has charm, but bad video quality just isnt tolerable. And since the quality-loss is caused by the compression, it can be fixed, and even easily - Just pay more attention to the details of the configuration.

And well, the content is in fact free, but i assume that rev3 is being paid per view so it does not compare to the situation of open source software users.

Most video codecs tend to screw the beginning of videos up, because of the bitrate allocation algorithm, but that mostly only happens with bad encoding softare and/or because of unreasonable default settings. And it usually only occurs in 1-pass encoded videos.

It has to be mentioned, that the configuration of mordern video encoders is far from trivial and predefined profiles are not suitable for most content, because the settings heavily depend on the character of the content.

I love the shows! - But i dont appreciate the path that Systm is taking lately.
