Looks like Microsoft is bringing Blu-ray to the 360 in the same manner as they did with HD-DVD.

(I don't know how reliable that source is, mind you)

I have to say that at this time the single biggest reason I would get a PS3 was for the Blu-Ray.
The second reason was for some of the exclusive games such as LBP.
If MS is releasing an external Blu-Ray player then that just takes away my biggest reason to get a PS3 at this time. Especially during this holiday season.

I hate to say this. I'll probably get tagged by the XBOX 360 fan kids. But, Blue-Ray player or no. The PS3 is a superior media player. The only real plus in the XBOX 360 camp is the better availability of online media. And, the Netflix "Play-it-now" will be a real coup. However, sans the online content, the PS3 supports more formats and streams better with the same software PC side. And, my 4-year old daughter can use the PS3 to stream content from the PC, but can't figure out the XBOX 360.
Anyhow, I won't be buying a blue-ray drive for my XBOS 360 because my HD-DVD drive will have no place to go. :(

If I had a PS3 I would see no reason to buy this either. But, since I don't have one and I don't want to spend the money for a PS3 at this time, then this is definitely worth it for me if its 100 to 150 bucks.
Then again, if the quality of the player is really sub-par (and I'm talking almost broken quality) then I would hold out for a PS3 or other blu-ray player.

Can a PS3 RROD on Christmas morning?
Only after you spend 2 hours downloading and installing a demo.

Almost certainly no. It's a different case compared to the 360. The drive just goes, not the whole system.

Mine broke about 8 months after I started using it. Luckily, I've had no issues since.
Of course I just jinxed myself so I expect to go home tonight and find it broken again. :(

It'll be nice to have the option of a Blu Ray player, but honestly, I could give a rats ass about HD movies (or TV for that matter). The difference in quality in most instances really doesn't make it something I'm interested in.

I've had exactly the opposite experience, minus the 4 year old. Setup on my 360 was a cinch and I am able to stream just about anything I throw at it, but I cannot get streamed video to play on my PS3 at all. I went through all the troubleshooting stuff on the site and it hasn't helped. A friend of mine thought I was an idiot and came over the other day to fix it, and after an entire evening he gave up until further notice. The same media that won't stream works perfectly when played directly on the PS3.
I wonder how much the external 360 drive would cost. At $179, the price the HD-DVD player came out at, it wouldn't be worth it. I'd rather get a standalone player.

Getting the media sharing up and running on my XBOX 360 was a mind numbingly painful experience. It just didn't work. After several dozen insulting phone calls with the Indian representatives of the ludicrously misnamed XBOX live tech support and several reinstalls of Windows XP. I gave up. It wasn't until after two dashboard updates and service pack 3 that things got fixed.
The PS3 got plugged in and worked... end of story.
The PS3 media interface seems much slicker and easier to use and supports more types of media like MPEG 2 and Motion JPEG.
My main complaint is they neither unit supports streaming a lossless format for music. We use audio therapy for my 2-year old son's Autism spectrum disorder that uses modulations in unheard frequencies to help him organize. However, lossy compressions all remove this modulation. So, I can't stream this music and keep it effective.
Also, neither unit will stream HD content other than WMV. Understandably, XBOX 360 is much better at streaming the HD WMV. But, you have to hand deliver other HD formats on a thumb drive to both devices..

I've watched 720p DivX videos on my PS3, streaming.

Hmm, I've had trouble getting different versions of the Divx codec working. Maybe, I have to update something.

It looked beautiful.. But I didn't keep them around (was just testing). I can't recall if it was DivX 6 or what.. I'm sure you could find them on... certain sites. IMAX videos, they were.

It sounds like its working for you then. I'm glad to hear it. My son's are 6 now and it's been a long ride with all the therapy but it was worth it to help them get to the level they are at.

He's not our first. My daughter is 4 and in the same boat. We got him on track early.

Early is the key. They were in therapy since they were 23 months so I know what you mean.

Since I already have a PS3 and a 360 I don't really need the add-on Blu-Ray player, but it would be a good thing for Microsoft to have it out for those of us who don't have both systems.
Also I was able to get media sharing up and running on both the 360 and PS3 pretty easily.

I was able to track down the problem to the Microsoft .NET framework. One of my other aps used it and there was a known conflict with WMP sharing service. Tech Support knew about it, but it was easier for them to blame my router. They never did quite explain how router problems inhibited sharing from one PC on the network but not all of them. Suffice it to say, the issue has been fixed.

Sooo, being an owner of a 360 hd drive, and that format has become extinct, is my free blu-ray addon in the mail or what???
Eventually I'm gonna add a bd reader to my desktop which is connected to my home theater anyway.

I hate it when a tech support answer immediately goes to "It's your router".
