So I signed up for Twitter. I'd been toying with signing up for a while, and I'm not sure why tonight it happened, but it's begun. I'm /nshady if anyone gives a crap. I've got a feeling this is going to be similar to my Facebook experience... steadfastly held off for ages, but then gave in and got kinda addicted. Has anyone here signed up and then found themselves not using it or found their updates petering out? And yes, I know some of you think the service is pointless and egocentric (you might be right on one or both counts).

Oh, yeah, my question for Jeff: My favourite url compressor at the moment is bit.ly, which seems to be three precious characters shorter than snurl.com. However, while bitly remembers your last fifteen clippings through cookies, snurl seems to have a proper user login and everything. So I'm wondering whether this offers some benefit in regards to twitter?

Welcome to twitter ... :)

Its broadcast IM. Better than an IM chatroom, not as instant as IRC.
Twitter is only as good as the people you follow.
Don't become a twitter whore and follow everyone ... then it is just a random stream of consciousness and loses its appeal fast, but, with the riht group of people following each other it can be fun.

As you hit Twitter, you'll discover that communicating in 140char bursts can be a challenge, so saving chars on a URL is important. They do compress some URLs (esp if at the end of a post), but you have no idea how much space you'll save, so you are better off doing it yourself.

I was a fan of tinyurl, then moved to bit.ly, but all the cool kids seem to be using is.gd.

The only reason I started using is.gd is that it's the shortest shortener that Twhirl (http://www.twhirl.org/) uses. And, boy, I do love my Twhirl.

I read it from time to time but it's not something I use. My social networking sites are just wasting bandwidth in my case. I respond to people more than I actually post.

I love twitter for friends, but find it sad that most folks that us plebs end up following don't follow us back again. I mean it makes sense that alex etc can't deal with the massive number of replies that we must send, but it makes it far less enjoyable to be on the non responsive end of a conversation.

Yeah, I was just wondering, if I reply to someone that's not following me, do they see it?

Yes.

Twitter for the first week is like an addiction.
"going to the bathroom"
"everything came out fine"
"twittering"
(not real tweets btw)

then for me i suddenly stopped twittering as much... I use it mostly for major things going on like what movie i'm watching or game i'm playing. if I'm going out and what bar I'll be at.

I've made a pact with myself to make all my tweets interesting (beyond initial setup experimentation, that is).

We'll see how that goes.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.

Twitter only has utility for self important bloggers who attend blogger conventions.

Personally, I've had the "Away Message" for years.

I'd care what you think if you twitted or blogged about it.

"Yes" is the simple answer. There is a replies tab that they have to go to if they want to see it. So if you're replying to one of the guys or any other person with hundreds of people replying to them it might get lost in the heyday. Don't always expect a reply.

Reason. People should stick to it. Gets annoying. POSTED 4 MINUTES AGO FROM WEB.

Broke their larger thought up into a whole bunch of tweets and clog up my whole screen. It says one hundred forty characters for a POSTED 5 MINUTES AGO FROM WEB

I like the restriction of the 140 character limit. What I hate is when people can't stick to it and decide it would be best if they just POSTED 6 MINUTES AGO FROM WEB

Anyone who would be interested in following me on Twitter is already on my buddy list and I am on theirs.

If that's not enough they can read facebook status updates.

People got all wet over twitter because of "flash parties" at SXSW and they proclaimed Twitter a "game changer"

the rest of us continue to yawn.
