I am looking for an easy way to check my computer at home (which is hooked up to wireless internet) and be able to use it as if i were actually on it from a remote computer. And do simple functions like start downloads copy files between computers open and close programs and the like.

The catch is i dont want to pay for a program and im not to sure ho to set up the Remote Desktop Assistance that comes with the computers

Both are dells one runs vista and the other xp

MS Windows has the remote desktop built in, but I would not say it is exactly secure. Some people use some variation of vnc, but that is not without issues also. I use freenx/nx combo via vpn and it will work on even a low bandwidth connection. Some could probably suggest something better.

The secure way to do VNC is use a SSH tunnel.

I use Real VNC. It does cost, but it's totally awesome.

Also, don't forget to forward the selected VNC-port. Which is usually 5800 or 5900.

You really don't want to put any VNC service on the Internet, your asking to be shot in the face.

Ditto with exposing Remote Desktop directly to the internet. You don't want to do that, mucho dangerous.

I currently tunnel rdesktop through SSH to get at my desktop at home. It's a little sluggish (but faster than VNC) but it works great.

I know opening the VNC-ports to teh internets is like asking for ass-rape.

You could schedule when the vnc client stops and when it starts. It's a solution - not a good one but still is.

GoToMyPC is awesome, as well.

While it may not be 100 percent perfect, my method is to ssh in to the box, turn on VNC to teh intarwebs and limited to one connection for the duration of what I need to do, then shut it down as soon as I'm finished. I also keep VNC on a high-numbered and nonstandard port, and open the firewall to it only for the two or three IPs I might access it from.
