I was looking at the Dell studio Hybrid, and wanted to use it as a media center PC. I noticed it has no option beyond the intel X3100 integrated graphics, which has seemingly dashed my hopes and dreams.
My question is, can that chip, or any integrated chip for that matter, handle HD, and if so, what resolutions [720p, 1080i, 1080p] can it handle?
All I've ever dealt with is mid-end gaming cards at the lowest for media center use, so I have no clue how a modern computer using integrated will operate with HD video.

Yes it can certainly handle it, that's what I use. GPU's are only used to play back video under certain circumstances with the right filters anyway. A fool-proof way to playback HD smoothly is CCCP + CoreAVC.

A follow-up question would be, do those work in VLC or do I have to use a Directshow compatible player like WMP11? you have answered my question in regards to the HTPC [since media center uses WMP code anyway], but I was curious for my laptop, since I sometimes have issues with HD video, but love VLC.

No, they don't work in VLC but they won't interfere with VLC either. A question I might ask is how are you going to interact with your HTPC? E.g. mouse and keyboard or remote control?

If you're looking to do 1080 video you're going to want to use MS's players anyway. WMP & Media Center seem to be the only players that can handle the video without choking.
I'll give a +1 for CCCP as well. It's light weight playback is a life savor.

I have mouse and keyboard hooked up for when I need them but usually use a WinVista remote that came with my TV tuner card. The second question was mainly for my laptop, because I've been having issues with VLC slideshowing on 720p video.
