Despite my polling place's lack of stickers YES!
My voting story:
I went to vote at the elementary school next to my house which is that same one I went to from first grade on and the same one my mom took me whenever she went to go vote.
I got there at about 7:30ish and got online for the 39th Election district. Like most of Queens my district contains a lot of immigrants and there are a lot of elderly in my neighborhood. Combine this with a rather ineffectual polling staff and you'll understand that they'll be some difficulties to arise.
Each district has two machines (the old school switch-and-lever that NY will be using for the last time in this election) to it and the No.2 machine either broke down or people needed assistance with at least five times. At least two separate people started arguments with the volunteers. It seemed to take a lot longer than it actually did but I ended up getting in and out in about a half hour and luckily was only about 20 minutes late to class.
Didn't get an I Voted sticker so that sucked but I have my voter card to commemorate my first ballot ever cast. I think next time I'll try volunteering at the polling place.

That's a really lousy reason in my opinion. None of them are in it for the people? Then you read about the candidates, you watch the interviews, you get a picture about who would, at the very least, be the lesser evil. And then you vote for that guy.

Not saying that I think McCain and Obama were two evils. Just saying that I think that the "I didn't like any of them" is a weak excuse for being to lazy to do the work and get to known the candidates, and get figure out who to vote for. There has to be one you agree with more.

WesThere is some debate whether the Californians were backward thinking, or just too stupid to know how to vote correctly.
A vote for YES on Prop 8, the gay marriage proposition, actually meant banning gay marriage. A lot of people apparently voted yes thinking they were supporting gay marriage, when in fact the opposite was true.

I swear if the proposition was worded positively so that a YES meant support of gay marriage, or that the term "marriage" was not used (since it is an emotional trigger) then it would have passed meaning "Gay marriage OK - we just dont want it called marriage".

In my oddly Libertarian-esque view, the government shouldn't be in the business of marriage at all for anyone; leave that up to the churches. Government should merely be set up to allow any two persons to be joined civilly and which grants the same rights to everyone.
Setting that extreme view aside, though, I frankly can't see how denying gay marriage is Constitutional. In my opinion banning gay marriage (or adoption or parental rights or whatever) flies in the face of the equal protection clause (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal_Protection_Clause) of the Fourteenth Amendment. But I'm not a lawyer so, you know, grain of salt and all.

Agreed. I think they should get rid of the Marriage term and split it into Civil Unions and Spiritual Unions...Government deals with the civil and can't touch the spiritual and vice versa. Civil would have to be equal (any two non-related adults could be joined) and Churches could deny the spiritual in whatever way they see fit.

what was question 1?
State Supreme Court ruled that banning gay marriage was unconstitutional (or something along those lines)...Question 1 was whether or not to hold a Constituional Convention. (I think there was a movement passed in 85 to get the question asked every 10 years or so.) The big push and ad compaign was mostly done by the catholic church after the gay marriage ruling...hence the hot button issue.
Admittedly, it passing wouldn't mean anything specific...as anything would still need to be passed afterwards.

I find the proposition eight ruling to be utterly infuriating. How the hell does it affect your marriage if gays can get married too? How flimsy is your relationship if it is threatened by the mere concept of two gays getting married? Not even an actual couple you know, but the mere idea of it? How does it affect you in any way?
I think it's massively hypocritical for two people to be denied marriage and equality to preserve its 'sanctity' and 'integrity' and 'tradition' when there's such increasing incidence of heterosexual couples getting divorced. All we want is equality. The same rights as straight people. Every heterosexual couple knows that divorce is rising, adultery is rising, but straight people get married in the millions every day. All gays want is the opportunity to do the same if they so choose.
And I find it just as frustrating when people say "I don't mind them having a civil ceremony, but marriage is between a man and a woman", or "I don't want to break the tradition." Well, guess what: tradition, by definition, operates to prevent progress. If no-one ever broke with tradition, women would still be housewives, black people would be slaves. Hell, we'd probably be living in caves, hunting for food and sleeping next to fires. Saying that gays can have their own unions is like saying "Women shouldn't be allowed to work. That's a man's job. They can make up their own 'jobs' at home".
Given how ostracised and stereotyped we already are in society, it would be nice, for one of the most significant events of any person's life, to be no different to anyone else.

When you look at the stats, as you go up the demographics in term of age, the older you get, the greater proportion who voted yes on the proposition. I heard about an hour of discussion on the radio last night about how Obama is the first black president and blah blah blah. They were making this huge deal out of it. I thought that was pretty racist. He's a person - who cares if he's black? Everyone is equal.

It is a big deal to me as well. There is a lot of racist people in America. The country has a history filled with racism. It's probable that a good bunch of people wouldn't vote on Obama simply because he's black.
It's a big step for a country like America, to get a black president elected.
I agree that it's a bigger deal because, to me at least, he seems like somebody who would be a good President compared to the last eight years. But you can't really deny the race thing.

11-06-2008, 09:23 PM
When people start judging his actual presidency based on race, then it will be racist. For now, the country is just reveling in their progress.

11-06-2008, 10:07 PM
Well then, if that's how it is... Congratulations USA, on finally growing the fuck up.
To me, it's not a big deal. Maybe because I'm not black, and I'm not racist, so I experience neither side of the oppression personally. But shit, I thought people were past that already.
As a side note, I got the impression that because he is black is the biggest reason he actually did get elected, and not so much what he stands for. If that is the case, then it's reversed racism, and both are equally sad.
I mean, I do get that it's a victory for black people who feel negativity from whites, but the people on the radio, they just kinda harped on it for way too long. I suppose I could have turned it off, but I was hoping to hear more meaty stuff than that.
In any case, he can't be worse than Bush, so here's to hoping he stops stripping away your liberties and stops bullying the rest of the world and other important things.

EDIT: I re-read this, and just wanted to say, I mean no offense to anyone by what I wrote... sorry if I come off that way.
It's a trap. He has a ferret on his shoulder. McCain has a ferret. Ergo, Troll!
(totally just kidding) :p

The Democrats have traditionally had as their core constituents lower to middle class people of a diverse background. A large problem they have had in the past is getting their power base to get off their asses and vote.
Barack did get a huge boost because of African American voters - but not strictly because he is black, but because they felt they were no longer disenfranchised from the candidates. They had someone they could get behind.
Its a fine line, he got people out voting because he was black, but they were voting for him because the policies of the Democrats are those that would help them (and a lot of others). If the Republicans had an African American candidate, I am not sure it would have made as much difference, because the GOP does not typically have an appeal to African American voters. I dont think Colin Powell would have motivated as strong a turn out of African Americans if he had run for the GOP - despite him being a well regarded politician.
So, he motivated them to the polls, but who they voted for at that point was up to them - but it was an obvious choice.
