AVG is it for me, love that program. I use the free version and one the network version for a client of mine. Super duper it is.

I heard avast is ok as well

My corporate machine runs McAfee. I practice safe net, so I am not really in a high risk group.

However, my other machine here HAD a copy of McAfee, whose subscription has expired.

Do NOD32 or AVG have a background VirusShield type capability??

I like ClamWin. It's free and open-source.

yes, both AVG and NOD32 have a VirusShield (a.k.a. Memory Resident Scanner).

Anything is better than nothing. I wouldn't suggest any antivirus as your first line of defense, make sure you have a hardware and software firewall. Then get an antivirus.

Also **** IE seriously. Use firefox with noscript.

Back when I actually bothered auditing my system; I always used McAfee, I never had a single problem with it. I found that it picked up most stuff and that they were also efficient in their updating of virus definitions. Their heuristic was one other thing that I was impressed with.

Before using McAfee; I used Norton. I found it to be the worst AV on the market. I remember scanning my system and found that after scanning for an hour (the drive was no more than 40 gig and it had been defragmented prior to scanning) there wasn't a single infection. So, I went off and ran HouseCall (Trend Micro) and that retrieved at least 10 infections.

This was Norton '03 though, so, maybe they've got their act together by now.

These days I don't bother running anything other than SpyBot and Ad-aware -- which is rarely, because most of my time spent using the Internet is either at College or running Linux/Mac/ - or some other POSIX.

I've been running AVG for a while now, I love it! Its a good change from the Norton Anti Virus with all of those annoying pop ups. And I think Norton uses a lot of resources (at least a couple years back)

Avg's got my vote!
