OK, I need a geek who is good at math to help me figure this out. I finished the semester and in one class my teacher used an online grade management software that says I got an 88.7%, but I did my own math and it says I have a 90.1%. Maybe I did my math wrong, so I ask someone to help me figure this out. This is the difference of an entire letter grade, so any help is much appreciated.

I have three papers, worth 30% of my final grade. My grades are: 78, 95, and 92.

I have two lesson plans worth 30%. My grades are: 92 and 92.

And I have two exams worth 40%. My grades are 85 and 88.

So here is the math I did:

(78+95+92/300)*30=27.9%
(92+92/200)*30=27.6%
(85+88/200)*40=34.6%

Sum of all percentages: 27.9+27.6+34.6=90.1%

Is that wrong? Is there a better way to do this? Why does her software say 88.7%?

Thanks in advance for your help!

(78+95+92/300)*30=27.9%

Was it a mathematics course??

((78+95+92)/300)*30 =
(265/300)*30 =
0.8833333... *30 =
26.5

That 26.5 vs the 27.9 you calculated is the difference between an A and a B.
Afraid you get the B.

Is everything being done on a 100 point scale?

For example, getting a 46 out of a possible 50 is a 92%, but wouldn't affect your grade as much as a 78 out of 100.

Crap, I thought I checked my work. Oh well. I can live with a B. Thanks, Token.

(78+95+92+92+92+85+88)/700 = ~88.7%

no, it's all weighted differently. based on the weights: each paper was 10% of my grade, each lesson plan was 15% of my grade, and each test is 20% of my grade.

(78+95+92+92+92+85+88)/700 = ~88.7%

that doesn't take into account the different weights. weird that it still works, though. but token got it right. i e-mailed the teacher and asked her to reconsider my grade anyway since i didn't have many absences and i made a hell of an improvement since that first paper's 78%. hopefully she will adjust it, but if not i can live with a B

A make it a point of not questioning was other instructors give their students for grades.
