I'm shocked that no one has brought up the new trailer yet. I haven't been excited for a Star Trek movie since I was a little kid. I think Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban are the two most inspired casting choices in the movie.

Opinions?

HUGE continuity error. James T. Kirk did not know how to drive a standard transmission automobile. In the original episode "A Piece of the Action" he demonstrates this lack of skill in quite a humorous fashion. This is what happens when people make Star Trek films who aren't Star Trek fans.

And, Karl Urban is just too good-looking for Dr. McCoy.

I totally didn't care about that trailer until that kid said "My name is James Tiberius Kirk!" and then my wife and I both sat bolt upright and said "What the eff?!" out loud. Caught some looks, but it was worth it. My other favourite moment was when Simon Pegg showed up as Scotty and my wife squealed "David Tennant?" She can tell the two apart - I think she's just hopeful DT is in everything.

I think the whole point of this new Star Trek film is to make a Star Trek film for people who AREN'T fans. Bring in a new crowd, and give it a different style. Sort of what was done with the 007 franchise, get rid of some of the mythology and standards (007s gadgets and outlandish villain plots) and give the franchise something with more punch, while at the same time, keeping the core characteristics of the franchise.

I was pretty surprised to see Simon Pegg in there.

I'm pretty excited about JJ Abrams directing it. Although I am half expecting to watch two hours of completely random unexplained stuff happen, have the movie end on a cliffhanger, and never get any answers until the 10th installment.

Its a reboot like they did with 007, Batman and alot of things now adays(friday the 13th even)

Looks amazing. My most anticipated movie of 09 right now.

Continuity in all of Star Trek is a joke.

I should add, that I'm not taken by that trailer at all and based on that and the pictures we've seen so far, I think I'm going to have a really hard time accepting new actors playing this iconic characters.

Yes Reboot is starting over. Just like Batman begins has nothing to do with the older batman films(besides like the old story and place....)

This movie isn't a clean reboot though (from what I've read). It sounds like there is a tie-in to the original canon material, but that they've got some way for it all to make sense as being new and different.

Im super excited.

Look, im a big star trek fan, im currently going through all the shows 1 by one and the movies in chronological order. Star trek is becoming my happy place if you will. But this is so cool i dont care if they fuck up some stuff. We are at a point in history where a movie like this could spark the star trek universe up again and inspire a new generation to want to grow up and work at nasa and other related projects. The country even under bush has finally decided to move on to mars and now with obama in there, i think that by the second term if he does good, there will be a push, if not by the first. Movies do have a effect on our countries collective mind and i so hope this turns out to be that kinda thing. It sure seems a nice vision of the future if nothing else, which is the whole reason i like the current star trek iteration.

Then again it might just suck, but they are treating it so far like a epic tale. I just watched the first trailer and got goosebumps.

Besides, we all know remakes fail to live up to the past. Transformers drilled that home for me. But if you just focus on what the past was and always compare it to the future you will miss out on a lot of enjoyment. Transformers also taught me that. Just kick back and take it in for what its worth and when your mind goes " omg thats not how it should be " just let it go cause you cant do a thing about. Enjoy the ride.

ah see i didnt know that....I would like to know more about that or what they are doing to make it a tie inThis movie takes place when Kirk first enrolls in Starfleet Academy, so it's much earlier than most other canon movies. It gives them the opportunity to use existing continuity but still fill in a lot of gaps that both trekkies and casual fans can appreciate. Consider this Star Wars Episode I. We'll just all have to hope it's better.

Eeer really dont like that you just used Episode 1 in that lol.

But ok cool i see what you mean, it can cross paths with stuff we have learned or seen before hand in other films and set up for future events(or we will see stuff that was talked about in the older films? like the clone wars)

I really need to refresh on Star Trek.... been so long.

This is the rumoured plot of the new movie:

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

Romulans from the future, most likely TNG time frame led by a Romulan named Nero, played by Eric Bana, finds the City on the Edge of Forever and uses the Guardian of Forever to go back in time and kill the person who has been the biggest thorn in the Romulan’s side and is crucial to the success of the Federation and Starfleet, James T. Kirk.

Mr. Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy in the original timeline, becomes aware of Nero’s plan (not clear on the details of how he knows) and also goes back in time to protect his best friend, James Kirk. This is where the Old Spock (Nimoy) and Young Spock (Quinto) meet.

Old Spock warns young Spock about Nero’s plans and it’s up to them to protect the future Captain Kirk and also help try to protect the timeline and the future of the Federation and Starfleet.

This happens before Kirk and Spock form their life long friendship and bond. We have been told that there is a very cool scene where Old Spock tells the Young Spock about his friendship with Kirk, so while this may sound “illogical” (pun intended) it’s been described as very emotional.

It’s not totally clear, but this film may bring about the death of the older Spock, just as “Star Trek VII: Generations” saw the death of the aging Kirk at the hands of Dr. Soran.

The first time in the film that the audience is introduced to James T. Kirk is while he is taking a certain test that Starfleet cadets are required to take, the Kobayashi Maru. Kirk was the only cadet up to that point in Starfleet history to win the test’s “no win scenario.” Of course, using that Kirk perchant for disobeying the norm, he overcame the “no win scenario” by reprogramming the computer that ran the simulation. He was given a commendation for “original thinking” (”Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”).

New viewers should be attracted by what made Star Trek good in the first place. If that formula no longer works, why make a movie at all?

Geeks enjoy continuity, that fact is that the Danial Craig's Bond is more like Flemming's original character. The outrageous gadgets and villains are a conceit of the movie franchise. Nevertheless, imagine them rewriting James bond as a book-wormy mensch who was shy around women.

James T. Kirk was not a maverick, corvette driving Rebel. In the second pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before", Gary Mitchell characterizes the midshipmen James T. Kirk as "stack of books with legs." And, he definitely did not know how to drive a corvette.

Changing key personality aspects of the characters is not necessary to reinvigorate the series.

Anyhow, if they meant the movie to be a complete reboot, why center the story around a time traveling Lenard Nimoy as Spock?

Arguing about it now is pointless though. I'll probably love the movie dispite the liberties. We should wait until May for a full analysis.

I think the movie could be interesting, but I will try to view it as separate from Star Trek as possible. Thankfully, I did not watch the original show aside from two or three episodes on re-run and half the movies so this movie is treading mostly undiscovered land.

They did that one already ... or since this is a reboot with links to the future ... they will do it already (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102975/).

I'm looking forward to it. Probably not at the movies, I'll wait for DVD.

I am fine with the actors. I am fine with the storyline.
The one thing that jars me a little is the Enterprise. Did they save on money and shoot is in an Apple Store? Will the folks from Cupertino be in charge of space ship design in the future? Does the flightdeck start up with a nice little "chime"?

iBridge?Maybe ...

I will actually be fairly accepting of the new old Enterprise.

http://popwatch.ew.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/11/11/enterprise579_l.jpg

Externally, she is beautiful (but more reminiscent of Voyager).

Its just the curved white interior surfaces that bother me ... and the excess of white and blue on the iBridge. I am sure it will be easy enough to ignore.

I just hope that the computer voice is Majel Barret.

Also, Ralph McQuarrie's design of the Enterprise was fine. Not really any need to change it.

It seems like JJ Abrams is going for a more hyper-color candy-action film. Which could either work well paralleled with the darker sides of 'space' - but there is something a bit unnerving about the interior design (/film: "the inside of a Mac Genius Bar" - agreed)

But the cast looks killer. Some people are having issues with Eric Banna (a poor man's Christian Bale?) but i think he can pull it off - Hulk issues aside - he is a damn good actor (see: Munich).
