Hey guys, new to the forums, but have been watching for a long time. I was wondering what people on the forums think about the guys reviewing a lot of limited releases. For example this week they're reviewing Special and JCVD, when both Twilight and Bolt are coming out. While both of these films look interesting, I won't be able to see them probably until DVD, months after the review. These movies usually come out only in LA and NY, and while I like that they spotlight the movies for us to seek out when we can, I also like reviews of movies that are at least available to me, if I haven't seen them already. Am I the only one with this small gripe?

If yo follow the guys on Twitter, you'll know that they have seen Twilight and Bolt as well ... but after the taping of this weeks show.
With Special and JCVD, I woldn't be surprised to see them on DVD sooner rather than later.

I like that they shed some light on movies like Synechdoche, NY and Let The Right One In, but they had sort of mixed reviews on those, which make me not all that excited to seek them out. If it's a shout out, make it just that, shout out to these movies, maybe when they get released on DVD, but to give a full review on two releases as shout outs instead of review Twilight? Twilight is an event movie, whether I like it or not, it'd be nice to know what they think of it. Even if JCVD is a phenomenal movie, I won't be able to see it for months, and by that time I may have forgotten about it. A simple mention of a DVD release day would be more effective, so the idea that they review them as a shout out doesn't really work for me.

Jeren,
You raise a point I think about quite often, so thanks for bringing it up here. For me, it is my belief that we spend 90% of our movies section discussing the popular wide release movies. So, while the con of reviewing a movie only out in limited release is that most people listening won't have a chance to see or have seen what we discuss-- I think the benefit outweighs that.
The only way for these movies to exist is for us to talk about it-- the reason why we are reviewing JCVD on our show, and more importantly, for me, the reason why I am going to see it for my own enjoyment, is because I read a review of the movie on aintitcool.com a while back. I don't even remember if it was a positive review- but it brought the movie to my attention. And now we are going to review it and bring it to other people's attention. Even if all three of us hate it someone may still be intrigued to seek it out (like I often do). And to that point, we decide to the review the movie before we see it-- so it's not like we can change the movie we are going to review if we all didn't like it.
Lastly, TRS is a show about our interests- and this week-- we are more INTERESTED in seeing JCVD than twilight...
you definately raise a good point though...

I'm not quite in the same boat because Austin gets a ton of limited release movies, but in general I love hearing about movies that I'm not already familiar with. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to know what the guys thought about Quantum of Solace, but I like to know about films that flew under my radar. Many of my most beloved films are ones that I had never heard about through advertising and never saw playing at my local cineplex. I don't mind waiting until DVD release to see them if I have to.

i like when the guys review smaller release films, without their review of the orphange i probably never would have gone out to see it and its one of my favorite movies
even though about a week after i went to see it it got a wide release lol

I don't particularly care what the guys have to say about Bolt. I can get a million opinions on it in a million places but in the end I'll only end up shelling out $10 if I was interested in it after all of the times I saw the ads, or friends told me about it. JCVD, however, I might not get an opinion on elsewhere. My entire decision of whether or not I want to see this movie could rest on whether or not what Dan, Jeff, and Alex had to say about it interests me.

Firstly, thanks so much to Dan for responding. Points well taken.
It appears as if I'm in the minority here, which is fine. Perhaps part of my problem is that I have heard about these movies, and will likely read reviews on them and decide whether or not to see them based on that. But it's undoubtedly true that if the guys emphasize these movies by giving them a full review, it has a better shot of making my Netflix Queue.
However, I often see movies opening weekend and always look forward to the TRS reviews to come. But what can ya do I suppose.
Dan, maybe a mention in the outro, along with Netflix suggestions, on the weeks these limited releases make it to DVD? And once again, thank you!
For a first post on the forums, I am quite happy. See you guys around here, and by all means continue with the convo if you've anything else to add.

Hey, I realize I'm posting twice in a row, but I've come to another realization while watching episode 88 concerning limited releases.
I hadn't realized that the guys took so much pride in displaying these movies on their show. I realized that the show is about what they like, but I didn't see the pay out for me as the viewer.
However, after seeing this episode I realize now that the best part of that aspect, is that guys are more passionate and that's worth seeing opposed to a run of the mill review of the latest blockbuster. I especially felt this way from some of the things Jeff said.
To play devil's advocate, I think they are passionate about pretty much everything they talk about, which is why they host a show. Period.
Anyway, excited for JCVD and Special to be available to me. They are on my Netflix queue.

Anyway, excited for JCVD and Special to be available to me. They are on my Netflix queue. If you have cable, bth Comcast and TimeWarner have "Special" on their standard and HD Movies On Demand services. If thats an option available to you, its worth looking at.
