Looking for suggestions from fellow TRSers.

Comedy and drama, I suppose are the main types I like.

Here are the shows I like, that I could think of off the top of my head:

The Shield
Sons of Anarchy
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Prison Break
Curb Your Enthusiasm
24
Lost
The Ultimate Fighter
Arrested Development
That 70s Show
The Wire
Friends
Seinfeld
Family Guy
The Simpsons
South Park
Heroes

I'm checking out Survivors (both new and old) soon, but what else might I like, in line with something above?

ie:
if you like Seinfeld, you may like CYE.
if you like The Simpsons, you may like Family Guy.

That sort of thing.

Dexter + Avatar

Avatar isn't like anything in the list, and I am not really a fan.. Watched most of the first book, IIRC. I think I've outgrown children's shows, for the most part.

Dexter, I don't know much about at all. Why do you recommend it? What does it compare to from the list of shows that I like?

If you ask me Six Feet Under is THE greatest piece of drama I have ever seen. It's hilarious at times, it's deeply moving and the characters are just awesome.
The six seasons is a work of art. You have to watch this show form beginning to end.

In line with 24, and The Wire are two miniseries done by Showtime ... "Sleeper Cell (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0465353/)" nd its followup ... "Sleeper Cell: American Terror".

It was an awesome show that not many people know about (and it did involve people from The Shield :) ... so thats another plus).

I don't really know how to really compare shows to other shows, but maybe I can list some in the vein of those.

The Office (US & BBC)
Spaced (if you like Kevin Smith movies, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz)
Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel (some good character shows)
30 Rock
Chuck (mainly because it's a good blend of action and comedy and some drama)
Coupling (if you like Seinfeld/Friends might like it)
24 (if you like the Shield)
Burn Notice (on my list of things to catch up on)

I'd just check out premises on Netflix if you have it, add some shows to instant watch, or check out Hulu. I can't really recommend too many because most of what I watch you have listed.

Edit: I really think we need to create some over all threads for stuff like this. Anyone wanna make what are you watching/should be watching thread?

Thanks for the recommendations. I will check out Sleeper Cell if possible. Dexter, I looked it up on IMdb, and it does not sound appealing whatsoever. Not sure I could get into Six Feet Under, either. The subject matter is a little... creepy in those, from what I read.

Thanks for some of those suggestions. I am trying to get into 30 Rock, but so far, there are only a few laughs... Not sure if I'll stick with it. 24 was on my list already, it's a great show.

Not a Buffy fan. Firefly, perhaps. I liked Serenity. Angel I'll have to look into. Will look up the others too.

As far as your comment at the end, I understand. But the problem is that everyone has different tastes, and I'm not looking to get into shows that some people like but aren't my style - this is why I listed the ones I already liked, to find shows similar to them that I may have overlooked.

What I didn't want was: "Oh, you like Family Guy and The Shield - check out Battlestar Galactica! It's awesome. Totally unrelated, and not your style... But check it out anyhow, because that's what I like."

Maybe a good solution would be to group things together, so like list the various comedies together, the cop dramas together, etc. But that's hard to do on a forum that doesn't let you edit your posts forever, making it difficult to trudge through a thread for additional recommendations or new shows.

Quite true. It's hard to recommend something for everyone. I really do like the Netflix recommendations though. I've found quite a few shows through that.

Another recommendation:
Bones if you like CSI type shows but with more humor.
Freaks & Geeks and Undeclared if you like Judd Apatow movies.

The subject of Six Feet Under is death, and life.

Mostly it's a show with great characters and how they interact with eachother. It is creepy at some points, but in a good way.

If you like The Office, you might like Summer Heights High, Extras, Stupid, Stupid Man, Review with Myles Barlow or Real Stories.

And just generally (I know you said you didn't want it but tough luck), if you like comedies, you might like Top Gear.

I'm pretty sure I saw an episode of that and hated it. But maybe I'm mixing it up with Six Feet Under... I will maybe find an episode of it, I guess... Though the IMdb descriptions of it don't sound appealing.

I *am* going to like it, since I know I have a soul... It's like I don't have a choice.

I started watching 30 Rock, and at first, I didn't like it, but about half-way through season 1, everything just started clicking and I really enjoy it now.

The Office started out awesome, then had a few bad episodes, but it got better near the end of the season.

Started watching The Unit, which is getting better through season 1, and I like the dude who was in 24 (can never remember his name).

I still have more to check out, so thanks to everyone for the suggestions. :D

Freaks & Geeks is briiliant and Undeclared is almost brilliant . . . I wouldn't say, "... if you like Apatow movies", though, because they aren't really like his movies.

How I Met Your Mother is very unique tv.

I watched Rules Of Engagement season 1&2 lately. It's very typical unimaginative sitcom set-up and plots, but the jokes are really good and fast. 5 cast members, 3 are great = David Spade, Patrick Warburton . .. and the blonde mom from Grounded For Life .. the other two are ok,.... the wife has big butt, that's good, other than that, the other couple are adequate.

newsradio is the best sitcom ever.

I have two comedies to recommend. They aren't directly like anything on your list, but I can say that all of my close friends that like Arrested Development, It's Always Sunny In Philidelphia, Curb Your Enthusiasm and 30 Rock also like both of them.

Spaced and Mr. Show.

As someone else said, Spaced is brought to you by the team that did Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. It is 14 episodes long, shot like a film, and makes frequent references to geek culture and life in your 20s (as experienced during the end of the 90s and beginning of the current decade). Tim and Daisy are great main characters, but the supporting cast is brilliant in a Seinfeld way (except for Twist, thankfully she's hardly around). It is on my short list of favorite shows of all time, which has a good bit of overlap with the list you provided.

Mr. Show is IMHO the greatest American sketch comedy show to ever air. The sense of humor is smart and twisted. It has some of the most brilliant seques I've ever seen. Only Mr. Show could show you how a young dimwitted american metalhead could discover that he was the reincarnated Dalai Lama, and during a visit from his still dimwitted high school friend Derek, while discovering how much they had grown apart decide to team up to help the monks at the monestary beat the kids from the local fat camp in the annual summer competition. I'm leaving out detail to avoid spoilers and as a result doing it no justice, just trust me it has to be seen to be believed. There are a few subpar episodes but most of them are perfect. Off the top of my head I'd say "Peanut Butter, Eggs and Dice" is a safe one to start out with.

WHAATTT?!!? I do not feel bad for one second that I spent watching that show because it was so whimsical and completely different than anything on tv. God forbid that a show do something new and different and sadly any time a show tries something new it ends up getting canceled because mainstream America can't get away from the regular crap TV that they watch.

Do you know which parts of Buffy you watched? My wife was/is a fan, and when it came out on DVD I bought it for her sake. I watched the first season with her and found it slightly better than I expected, but nothing I was interested in watching more of. I got her the second season and found myself becoming hooked. By season three I was more interested in watching than she was.

Buffy herself is the least interesting part of the show. I'm a much bigger fan of Giles, Xander, Willow and Spike than I ever was of Buffy.

Definitely not saying its a show for everyone, but everything that made Serenity good is present in Buffy minus the level of budget during a two hour block.

Yeah, I don't think the Master plotline from the first season is essential, and you'll pick up on most of the other tidbits as you watch.

i hear ya about Sarah Michelle Gellar. The only person I know that really liked Buffy the character is my wife, and I attribute that to the whole 'girl power' thing. My other friends that fell victim to this show (and there are a lot of us) prefer the rest of the Scooby gang. Although teen angst does find its way into the show, it in no way defines the show. It's more the sense of humor of the writing and the cleverness of the latest monster of the week intertwined with the plotline dealing with whoever the Big Bad is for that season that kept us coming back for more.

Reaper is really good. It's on hiatus until March, but Season 1 is available on DVD. It's a comedy about a slacker whose parents sell his soul to the devil The devil makes him be his Reaper, capturing escaped souls from hell.

Ray Wise is great as the devil.

Numb3rs is really good. FBI agent and his math genius brother solving crimes. Similar to 24, in that it is an action drama, but not so over-the-top.

Another action drama (but canceled) is Jericho. It's about a small city in Kansas trying to survive after 23 cities were destroyed by nuclear bombs.

Hope this helps!

Not a clone...but there are similarities. At the root of it all, they're both (even 24) detective/mystery/crime dramas with a hook.

CSI: Forensics unit
24: 24 hours
Numb3rs: Math consultant
House: Medical Diagnosis
Bones: Forensic Anthropologist
Mentalist: a mentalist

etc, etc, etc.

Life

Especially the 1st season, but I'm still loving it. I don't watch many "cop shows" these days (I'd love to watch The Shield from the beginning without buying the DVDs ... or by other means - wish FX would just reboot it from the beginning)

Last few episodes have shown a bit of weakness, but I'm hooked based on the strength of the main character and the actor who portrays him - Damian Lewis from BoB.

Also Venture Bros. and Home Movies on AS.

the venture bros. is great animated show. looks like a johnny quest type show, but it has alot of adult themes. it ain't now kids show.

i really liked cowboy bebop, then i saw firefly and it reminded me of cb just cause it was people in a spaceship looking for work, though that's where the similarities end. firefly is a great show, i never really got into buffy, but liked angel spin-off, then firefly was the pinnacle of whedon tv shows.

creator of cowboy bebop went on to make samurai champloo, which is more cartoonish in some part. like a character might eat alot and then shown as massive, then in next frame they are back to normal. but the serious parts are good and lots of action, sword fighting. set in the edo period of japan, where as cowboy bebop was set in future space.

extras is a great series as well, and the uk office. i couldnt get into the us office, just seems to campy. i like gervais shows cause they have an ending. don't just keep churning out episodes. he says what he wants and wraps it up. i liked extras more, but both are good.

Also, AbsoluteMayheM, I've been a big MMA fan for a long time, and I used to prefer Pride over UFC, and then IFL, EliteXC, Affliction, etc. Now we're basically down to two (I count WEC as basically the same as UFC, but I find the fights are usually better with the lighter guys). Love that show. Wish it was on Hulu or that I could view via the iPlayer without mucking about with proxies.

Got a few blokes from the Mighty Boosh in there for fans of that (love me The Boosh watch all of them quickly!).

My favorite episode of The IT Crowd is when they go to see the play and Roy gets caught using the handicapped bathroom. Hilariosity.

By the creator of Father Ted iirc (another great one).

The show I wish I could get somewhere other than YouTube is anything Charlie Brooker. Screenwipe is genius look into the media and Newswipe is brilliant as well. He's done individual US episodes (seek those out - great stuff on The Wire) but I'd love for him to do a series ripping the whole mess (by mess I mean the US mess) a new arsehole.

Rescue Me. It's a comedy/drama on F/X and has all of the seasons that have been aired on Netflix Instant. It does star Denis Leary who seems to be either a love/hate personality but the show is really good, and has both tear jerker moments and laugh out loud moments.

Did it...wasn't that impressed. Overall it was decent, and I may have liked it better back in the 80s, but the only reason I watched all of it was there were only 12 half-hour episodes.

sure, there are some great lines...and Polly out of uniform had me rewind it a couple of times, but it generally isn't my type of humour. Had I just watched the pilot without knowing it was a short run, I wouldn't have continued...and one of the episodes during the first series turned me off of it (I forget which, but Basil routinely ignored everyone who was trying to set him straight...I don't find that funny, just dumb.)

And the anniversary episode...why didn't he just explain it to them? That would make more sense than coming up with an illness story.

Fair enough if it's not your type of humour, but you've got to put it in cultural context. Comedy today owes shows like Fawlty Towers hugely. An unlikeable main character, the idea of stopping a show while you're ahead, faux pas and cultural insensitivities. It might seem ordinary now to some (though I still find it funny).

Which is why I mentioned I'd like it better back in 80s...some of the shows I loved back then, when I watch them, seem lessened today.

I'm so into Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara right now.

Sad that Castle, Glee, Community, and 30 Rock are on break.

Looking forward to next season of Weeds & Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

Firefly and Pushing Daisies should NEVER have been cancelled :(

Hated how Lost ended D:<

I'm trying to catch up on Doctor Who right now. Hoping to also watch Battlestar Galactica and some Star Trek during summer break!

I think the best recommendation I ever got from TRS was Jekyll. I've since recommended it to a bunch of people and they all love it!!

Any recommendations for me based off of this list? I'm considering starting on The Big Bang Theory...

Definitely Big Bang Theory, also Breaking Bad, The Office, and Parks & Recreation.

Actually I don't think they stopped making FT while it was ahead, they stopped making it because nobody cared. It went un-noticed at first. I think it only became popular on it's second and third runs, mainly getting global recognition on it's third run.

Oh yeah I forgot about parks and recreation <-- good show.

You know, I've kind of stopped watching The Office but I quite enjoy Parks and Recreation.

I so regret not watching Breaking Bad from the beginning. I have an issue breaking into a series right in the middle. I really wish that shows like that would run a marathon of past seasons or just start a series up from the beginning at a later time so people could catch up and get into their show.

Wish it was on Hulu. I hear it's the bee's balls, but I don't currently have a Netflix account and I don't want to spend a bunch of cash atm (thank you AMC I'm sure there's other ways for me to see your show other than buying your DVDs - don't push me maaang!)

*suppose I could get the seasons for $16 each via Amazon ... bleh

One show that I always reccommend to people but no-one seems to have seen is ReGenesis. Its a Canadian production that includes Peter Outerbridge as the main character and Ellen Page of "Juno" fame as his daughter through most of the first season. The acting is on the whole superb and so is the writing.
Its a drama that centres around a fictional organisation called the North American Biohazard Advisory Comission or NORBAC and follows the team of scientists as the struggle to solve perplexing cases of bioterrorism, natural outbreaks and scientific accidents/mistakes. I guess it's technically sci-fi and if you don't like people using lots of scientific lingo I would avoid it, but the stories are really engaging if you get the chance and the central characters feel very real. Expecially the lead (Outerbridge) who is mean, arrogant and patronising but still manages to be charming and at times hilarious.
It's fairly short, only 4 seasons of 13 episodes at 40ish minutes per episode without commercials. If nothing else, I seriously suggest watching the the episodes Baby Bomb and Spare Parts. It sets the tone of the whole show in which they deal with incredibly sensitive and controversial issues in an intelligent and insightful way. I do warn though that at times this show can seem very dark and bleak, and if you engage with the characters like I did, you may find it genuinely emotional at times.
I urge everyone to at least give it a chance though as it is some of the most polished television I have seen, right from the start, with high production values, quality writing, solid acting an some really interesting stylistic touches. Particularly notable are scenes in which one set of characters are talking and then separate, after which the camera follows one character to another conversation or event. There is then a rewind and the camera follows the other half of the initial conversation to see something that happened simultaneously. Can't think of anywhere else I have seen this done, but it's a great way of keeping the viewer informed without some clumsy dialogue explaining what happened.

I'm not really sure what I can compare it to as the subject matter is unique to my knowledge. A lot of the science is completely real although I imagine a lot of the work is carried out in superhuman time in order to fit the show, but the concepts are not what I would call far-fetched.

Check it out and see what you think, you may be pleasently surprised.

During the dress-changing - "it's a bit tight across the bust", .. "oh, but I love it" !!!

The episode where it's blazingly hot, she's wearing a tight little tank-top and she kisses her boyfriend across the check-in counter, the actor pulls her shirt towards him right at the cleavage.

Oh. I thought they were different ep's. I thought the hot ep was the B-story to the 'upper crust patrons' episode when Basil gets scammed by 'Lord Melbury'. I do have them all on VHS, just been about 4 years since I watched any.

I know it's not really cool to like reality shows and I try to limit my exposure, but my wife recently started watching Toddlers and Tiaras and I am memorized. I go through short periods of "NO F'ING WAY!" followed by some "OMG!" and eventually "WTF!??!".
