This version is much better than the other, palming a match in the other version never sat right with me.
Awesome new game, as soon as i tried nim on my friends and family, they immeadiately counted the number of tokens and figured out there was a trick to it, this however seems immune to easily guessable tactics

This is almost identical to an old flash game called Pearls Before Swine:
http://www.transience.com.au/pearl.html
except there's 3 groups of 3, 4, and 5 pearls.
There's also a more advanced version with 4 groups: 3, 4, 5, 6 pearls.
http://www.transience.com.au/pearl2.html
It's just as "fair" as Brian's version (since anyone can go first), but it's much more challenging. I would like to see Brian tackle it.

If you go first, you pull one, but if the other person pulls 3 from any pile the only way to win is to pull one again.

Is that bad? I'm not sure I follow.

Yeah I played a game similar to this in school. (Crossing out lines on a piece of paper)
The flash game above is the same idea.
If you understand the maths behind it its possible to win every time with any number of coins and any number of piles!
Memorizing winning patterns like in the show is one way, but you can win with any number of coins just by keeping track of a few numbers in your head.
(HINT: To beat the devil in the above game, you have to make sure you always leave him with pairs of binary numbers. I.e for every lone pearl in a row, there has to be a corresponding pearl in another row. For every set of 2, there has to be a corresponding 2. Same with groups of 4, 8 etc..) With the obvious exception of the last pearl.
Much more satisfying than memorizing a cheat sheet :)

Ya well I've been a lurker for a while but haven't really posted much.
It's a HS exchange. My schools actually in Kanagawa but I'm living in the center of Tokyo so it's a bit of a commute.
I'm not familiar with temple. Where is that?

Temple is an American University, but they have a campus in Tokyo. It's near Azabu Juban (also within walking distance of Tamachi from the Yamanote Sen). How long have you been here?
