View Full Version : Sci-Fi book or graphic novel
So I haven't been a fan of books or reading unless it really interested me. However since being in college now I've been wanting to read a good book. I would like it to be a sci-fi book but if there is some comic or graphic novel that is a MUST READ I could pick that up too. I really enjoy star wars, firefly/serenity, and mass effect so if it could be along any of those lines I would be more apt to read it. Let me know radsters :D!

In the realm of Star Wars, I really dig most of the New Jedi Order books and on the graphic novel front, if you want something a little different, I'd recommend Persepolis. Its the autobiography of Marjane Satrapi and the first part is about her childhood in Iran, its a really great read!

I just read a book called SnowCrash. It's a decent read, pretty light and easy. You go through it pretty quick. But it's a fun ride, it has humor, and it's really interesting to read this book today considering the content and the time it came out.

I'm not a huge sci-fi book reader but I loved 'Ender's Game' and would recommend it to anyone.

Novel:
Ender's Game - The great thing about this is that it can be as deep (or not deep) as you want it to be. And it's a great story regardless of the sci-fi. Like the other poster said, this could and probably should be recommended to anyone.
Graphic Novel:
The Surrogates by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele - Probably one of my all time fave GNs. The art may be a little off-putting to some.
Fear Agent - This has become more of an ongoing title though. If you just read the 1st 2 trades though, it's amazing. It does a very good job of combining sci-fi and humor. This is one of my fave ongoing titles.
2001 Nights - This is more like a compilation of stories, but they all have a similar theme. And I think they all follow each other in time. Good luck finding that though.
Ocean by Warren Ellis - Feels like a movie you've seen before. The story kinda feels a bit generic, but it is really enjoyable.
I know that there are a lot more GNs that I like, but I can't seem to think of them at the moment.
Alright thanks guys I'll check out Ender's game for sure then. Give the others a glance and pick up what ever intrigues me the most.

Ender's Game is good if you're just getting into reading. It's a light read, but fun.

Babylon Babies - they made the movie Babylon A.D. out of it, but the movie was pretty much nothing like the book. I'm a third through the book and it's quite riveting.
Also, if you've ever been a fan of Mechwarrior, the Legend of the Jade Phoenix trilogy is absolutely mindblowing.
Also, someone mentioned Phaze Doubt up ahead, it's a book in the Apprentice Adept series; which is super awesome.

Ender's Game and Snow Crash as mentioned above be several people are both classics and awesome. Another option, if you're looking for a graphic novel would be Y The Man. Great stories, great art; the series recently concluded. You can start slow with the first trade and go from there.

Allow me to concur with Ender's Game and Snow Crash. Those are two of my favorite books from my reading past.
A great compliment to Snow Crash is Neuromancer, which pretty much established the Cyberpunk style that Snow Crash carried forward.
Dune is my favorite novel of all time, and by extension also my favorite Sci Fi novel. It is absolutely essential reading.
