View Full Version : How Does A Governor Get Replaced?

tokenuser

With Bill Richardson being tapped for SecCom, how does the new New Mexico governor get selected? Is it by order of succession, with the Lieutenant Gov becoming the new Gov for the remaining term of the current Gov, or do they go to the polls at the mid term election, or is there a special election called?

Sorry for the questions - I understand the politics, but some of the political processes have me stumped. This is completely foreign to me, having grown up with the Westminster system of government where the Cabinet (Front Bench) consist purely of elected members who serve dual roles as both Minister of <insert post> and Member for <electorate/political district>.

I suppose it depends on the Constitution of the state in question.

My guesses,

1. Lt. Governor
2. Special Election
3. Legislative Appointment

My money is on option one. An appointment to a cabinet position is just practical resignation for the governorship. Governors are usually replaced my the Lt, in most states I'm familiar with. The real problem comes in places like NY where the standing Governor had to resign and the Lt. replaced him without a clear line of succession after that. If the new Gov becomes unavailable....then what?

Well, unless you live in Alaska. The constitution (http://ltgov.state.ak.us/constitution.php?section=3) we wrote still needs a few amendments.

A rich movie star backed by a powerful right wing coalition calls for and gets a special midterm election, then uses smear campaigns and press intimida--oh wait. That's California. Never mind.

Get enough signatures to get it on the ballot to recall the governor, also have a porn star, a movie star, and Gary Coleman run for replacement. Goes to ballot. If there are enough yeses to the recall, then whoever had most votes wins. If there aren't enough, then the election part is moot. Really, Davis sucked ass, and I'm satisfied with Arnold. Not perfect, but who is?

How does a governor get replaced?

Dunno. If you live in Illnois (http://www.illinois.gov/) it seems that you get a new governor
when the old one (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/World/Illinois_guv_ignores_call_to_resign/articleshow/3822513.cms) gets a lengthy prison sentence for corruption:

...or you could just send him some mail (http://www.illinois.gov/gov/contactthegovernor.cfm), asking him, maybe he'll listen?

How many Illinois Governors does it take to change a light bulb?

What's the difference between the man who perfected the "rhythm method" and the Governor of Illinois?

You guys all seriously need to chill the fuck out. I love how you can't say the word "black" without being a racist now.

Ironically, ya'lls comments are exactly why this guy was chosen. People are so scared about being politically correct.

A black person was chosen to replace a black person. Shocker! I could care less if the guy was fucking purple if he's qualified. My problem is when his qualification is because he's black.

I can see it all over the news now if a white person was chosen to replace him. There was pressure for that seat to be replaced with a black person. I'm simply saying this is no shock to me. Even the Clinton News Network was saying this was motivated by race today.

Here's a PM I sent to a mod on this forum on 11-15-2008, 10:56 PM. Sound like a racist to you?

"You have no idea how hard I worked at staying away from the forum during the end of the election.

Obviously I have a different opinion on how to run things than Obama does, but I didn't want to take away from his nomination.

Pretty cool having the first black president in the US.

While I whole heatedly think his views on running the country are wrong, I don't think (like most other republicans) that his goal is to destroy America."

Assholes.

what crumbles said wasn't racist. you really couldn't infer that from his statement of fact.

for example if i called someone a in the closet gay who is also are racist, and in fact they were, i would be doing nothing wrong. just stating a fact. you shouldn't infer anything about my thoughts on gays or race. all i was doing is making a statement on a observable fact.

you know just an example to clear every thing up.

i mean only those in uniform would know what it meant to serve right?

i mean only those in uniform would know what it meant to serve right? That all depends on their actual reason for serving. Was it because they couldn't make it into college? Was it because they wanted to be around a lot of men in the shower? These are just questions we'll never get the answers to.

=== NOTE TO EVERYONE ===

The internet provides an often public soapbox where a multitude of different opinions can be aired. Unlike the soapboxes of old, the keyboard and a username provide a level of anonymity that was previously unavailable.

People online forget that an opposing opinion does not constitute a personal attack. This is not a life an death struggle for survival, or to score points by having the biggest ePenis - it is a discussion area.

It is not the formal discussion area of a debate platform and a defined protocol and set of rules are established for the opening and closing arguments, it is the bar room where people with common interests can get together, share a beer and bullshit with each other AS ADULTS.

I consider many of you friends, regardless of us having opposing viewpoints. People with an different views can make us question our own views, and either refine our own beliefs, or possibly sway it to an alternative. That is part of the process of learning.

But, like a bar room, sometime it gets a little noisy. Arguments get a heated. A comment is misunderstood, or taken out of context. The intent is not clear whether it was sarcasm, or serious. And a bar room brawl breaks out.

Before the fight spills out into the street and authorities are called, a friend needs to step in and pull the protagonists apart, put them in separate corners, and tell them to back off and calm down.

As a friend, I am saying - back off and calm down. Ignore the other person. You all know how to do that. There are even greasemonkey scripts out there that will help you with that effort.

Install greasemonkey (not needed in Opera ;) ), and save the following where it goes.

Love the script, Steve. Would be cooler if you could incorporate a
"word replacement" bit of code that actually re-writes the
offensive comments to something, say, oh, dunno, less offensive,
perhaps comical or maybe into a different language like Arabic or
Chinese, so that somewhere on the other side of the planet a
bar fight can actually take place, and you don't upset the subtle
balance of the universe by simply 'ignoring' the attempts being
made by some, to communicate at some level of intelligence.
