What are the best wireless cards/manufactures for Linux?
I bought a Belkin card which uses ralinks rt61 chipset but have been unable to get it to work.

1st: what Distro of Linux are you using?
2nd: some good cards are the Intel Pro Wireless 2200, any card running on a Prism chipset, the Orinoco cards and depending on your distro, TI chipsets also work well with Linux.
You could always use NDISWrapper to use the Windows drivers with Linux, but it sucks, is a pain in the ass, you lose features and it's not very reliable.
The best place to find out what chipset a model card is running is, ironically, the NDISWrapper Wiki...just google it...i just woke up and i don't feel like finding a link

Ubuntu edgy

That was the first thing I tried when getting it. But don't believe it's supported. I tried following the guide below but to no avail.

ok, i know in Ubuntu Edgy, the IPW2200 and i think the rest of the IPW cards, the TI, and the Atheros cards are all supported natively...
If you're up for a good bit of CLI work, you MAY be able to get your RT61 card woking using some of the stuff on this site: http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
good luck

i just listed the few cards i know are plug and play with Ubuntu...i've loaded the liveCD and put in my Hawking Technologies HWC54G wifi card (TI chipset) and it worked perfectly, my IPW2200 worked straight out of the box...and those are the only 2 chipsets i've personally tried and i know run under Ubuntu

Perhaps you should try this howto (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=296822).

Cheers, will give one of those a try sometime. I've now given up on my rt61 card. I switched back to Dapper and managed to get it to detect my network but wouldn't connect, even without encryption. Maybe when I've had some sleep I'll give it a go with the serial monkey drivers.

I managed to get it working kind of in edgy. When I ping my router it sends and recieves packets OK but I can't get a connection. Any suggestions? I haven't tried it without encryption yet so it could just not be working with WPA.

I had my Netgear WG111 working un Ubuntu Edgy with NDISwrapper, with a bit of work, switched over to Kubuntu, can't get it to work for the life of me, and my dad can't get it to work with his openSUSE. And switching back to Windows XP just to find out what to do next when I have no internet access in Linux is a major pain.
