In the interest of "bringin' the positives"...

The 90's usually gets beat down by fans as the red-headed stepchild of comics. I understand why, of course, but to be fair... this awful, awful era is the time during which I fell in love with comics. It is also the time during which I fell OUT of love with comics... but there had to be SOME good product, right? Which leads to my question...

What were some great comics that came out in the 90's?

Two of my favorites include:

1.) X-Factor by Peter David - He made C-List characters cool before "making C-List characters cool" was cool.

2.) Batman Adventures - Widely dismissed as a "kiddie" book, this series of one-shot Batman stories drawn in a style reminiscent of the amazing "B:TAS" remains one of my favorite books of all time today.

Add The Long Halloween, JSA: The Golden Age, Warren Ellis' Stormwatch run, Jenkins and Lee's Inhumans, and Sin City to the list too...

the 90's was a great time for comics..... just not mainstream/super hero comics.

you had optic nerve, acme novelty library, black hole, all the Jinx world books, madman, hellboy, all the great vertigo books, ect.

and the best superhero book of the 90's was Starman by far.

Savage Dragon
early issues of Spawn
David Michelinie/Todd McFarlane's run on Amazing Spider-Man
Warren Ellis' Stormwatch
Kevin Smith/Joe Quesada on Daredevil
Larry Hama on Wolverine
Dan Jurgens/John Romita Jr. on Thor

Some of these started in the 80's or continued into the 00's, but they are mainly in the 90's.

Jae Lee fans, check out his Namor run written by John Byrne. This Namor looked haggard but in a good way; it's not the same kind of haggard look that Gaydos gave him. Both versions, however, look like they would stab you and take your wallet.

Go back to the Valiant/Acclaim era and buy Bart Sears's (back when he was a great artist) run on X-0 Manowar. Imagine if Conan the Barbarian got ahold of Iron Man's suit and you get the gist. It's a beautiful and well written series that's sadly been forgotten.

I'm actually a fan of a lot of the Valiant stuff, I really liked SHadowman, XO Manowar was awesome, I keep meaning to pick up the recent Harbringer Hardcover that just came out. Solar: Man of the Atom, hell even the Magnus:Robot Fighter was fun, fighting robots in a tunic? GOLD!

I'm going out on a limb here and saying:

Death of Superman
Knightfall

Both were decent stories and sure one of them brought around an orange and blue batman costume, but they were fun stories.

Death of Superman has a special place in my heart as I read it when I was young and it was one of the first big arcs I actually read in total. Also Jurgens's art was awesome. I really liked how the books panels counted down as well.

If it weren't for Knightfall I wouldn't be enjoying Bane in Secret Six. Also I did like Azrael before and after Knightfall.

Was Top 10 in the 90's? What about Moore's run on Swamp Thing or Supreme?

I know this crazy interweb thing is at the tip of my fingers, but my finger tips are lazin' hardcore style.

Several Grendel series from Matt Wagner and company!

I thought about that, but most of the really good Grendel stuff was in the
80's from 1986-1990. After that Matt passed off the writing too often.

Still good stuff, but not as good.

When was "Sam and Max: Freelance Police"? 'Cause I'll add that to the pile if it started in the 90's... but I have a sneaking suspicion it may have come from the 80's.

I'm not sure about Top 10. But, Moore started writing Swamp Thing in the early 80's and his Supreme series was in the mid to late 90's.

Paul Jenkins' Hellblazer run remains my favorite run with the character. Sadly it has never been collected in trade.

True Dat,

I guess my point though, was that for the actual story of Grendel your looking at the 80's. THere's been lots of really great Mini's after that, War Child, Batman/Grendel, James Robinson's Four Devil's One Hell to name a few.

But for the epic world shaping history of Grendel, that's all 80's baby.

I miss Comico, Maze Agency was so great...the Elementals...

:sniff:

Well, I'm off for a hip replacement you young pups ;)

Ah yes, great stuff. The Harbinger Hardcover is worth getting, those first 25 issues (done while Jim Shooter was EIC) were amazing, especially the ending. If there series ended on that note it would've been perfect, perfect way to end it. There's also the X-O Manowar and the just released Archer and Armstrong Hardcovers as well. I never read A&A so I can't comment on that, but it lasted a good while from what I remember.

I also really liked Rai and the first 14 or so issues of Bloodshot.
