Just curious what router firmware everyone uses at home and why you've chosen it.

I mainly use X-WRT because it has the versatility of OpenWRT behind a nice easy to use web interface. I've been tinkering with Tomato lately but I don't like it as much.

Whatever the latest manufacturer default is.
I've never needed any of the additional functionality presented by the alternate firmware enough to warrant switching.

I thought that x-wrt was an add-on to open-wrt. interesting. There are only a few routers that can take third party firmware. dd-wrt probably has the most wide spread adoption for the routers that can take a third party firmware upgrade. I currently use tomato on my existing router, but will try dd-wrt on a secondary firewall.. As low power pc's come out I will suspect that the tradition firewalls such as ipcop and the like might become back in vogue. it is easier to swap out parts on pci based box than to buy a new router every so often to have the latest technology. I have a few doorstops, Some cheap used thin clients can be easily converted to routers with the ability to change out nics as needed. I am working on a project now to do that.

I just installed dd-wrt after overwriting tomato on my wrt54gl to compare it against the buffalo. the buffalo router has a faster cpu is running tomato. I can see why Patrick said he had problems with upgrades on the linksys. Not a big deal if you do it right.

Tomato 1.22 never had any drops or lockups, awesome firmware. Just check the site, and 1.23 is out, haha, gotta get an upgrade.

You're absolutely right it is, but I've included it as a separate item because it's a completely different experience than command line OpenWRT, and they release pre-packaged firmwares with everything ready to go "out of the box".

I find Tomato to be a slight bit slower than my previous X-WRT/OpenWRT setup... Then again it could be my imagination.

Could be, or could be other things, like router, ethernet connection, the computer. No idea, I mean but if you find openwrt faster, than stick with what works. I'm havin' a ball with my tomato, though not against the thought of trying any of the other firmwares aside from the stock linksys.

Anyone flashed the cheap arlink101 ar430w with dd-wrt yet?

I have a WRT54GS v1.1 Not sure what exactly the deal is/was but with the manufacturer firmware and DD-WRT it would start losing the internet connection every few days and we'd have to restart the router. Installed Tomato, and so far it's been running like a champ.

I have set up routers with both. You just may have needed to tweak your settings a bit such as the mtu. I am using dd-wrt on the wrt54gl without noticeable issues but I did enjoy tomato on it for a while. Who knows I might go back if I decide the extra wireless features are not needed. I have also put tomato on a buffalo WHR-G125 router. I wish buffalo would start making routers again, they seemed faster than everyone elses. I just put dd-wrt on the arlink101 ar430w for a client. I did not see tomato for it, but I did not look that hard either.

OK, PS3 is having signal strength issues, so I just installed Tomato 1.23 to bump the wireless strength.

I guess I found a reason to upgrade after all :)
