View Full Version : Norman Osborn's Silent Partner

Does anyone have any guesses on who the associate of Norman Osborn is? I am talking about the big scary guy who was hanging out in the hallway during the Illuminaughty meeting.

Whoever it is is powerful enough to be used to threaten Marvel's smartest and most powerful villains.

Bendis set up a couple things with the Illuminati limited series from last year. He used it to reveal the Skrull plot, what happened to the Infinity Gauntlet, The Beyonder and Marvel Boy. Secret Invasion is done. Marvel Boy looks like he is involved with the Dark Avengers. The two remaining dangling Illuminati threads are The Beyonder and The Infinity Gauntlet.

My best guess is The Beyonder. I think he is tired of playing with The Alliance and thinks it might be more interesting to try out The Horde.

Yeah I automatically thought Void when I saw that page. He's willing to do shit the Sentry wouldn't do.

Is illuminaughty the word to describe the dark illuminati? Is that 'official'? 'Cause I love it! If it's not official I bow down dave graham.. I bow.

I think it was Matt Fraction who came up with it. Alas it was not I.

Somebody on the board guessed The Void, I thought that was a good one. I mean we know Bendis has been trying to make the Sentry relevant right?

Have we seen the Sentry since he went on his crying spree in Secret Invasion? He'll probably just return as the Void.

DOn't think so, but I haven't been reading Age of the Sentry, my understanding is that that's about the past anyways.

Well apparently he did come back as the Void in SI, I completely forgot about this till I just read the synopsis. Thanks again, Wikipedia!

When a Skrull spacecraft is discovered approaching Earth's atmosphere, the Mighty Avengers and New Avengers simultaneously head to its predicted crash area in the Savage Land. Inside are numerous superheroes dressed in past regalia. When fighting one who looks like the Vision, it transforms into the Void, blaming the entire situation on the Sentry's hidden desires. Panicking, the Sentry flees.[12] At the same time, a full-scale Skrull invasion begins, with one Skrull attacking the Watchtower where Lindy is. Before he can attack however, the Void appears and defends Lindy and tells her that the Sentry can't handle the situation and that "Whatever he can't do, I can."

Shaggyman, probably. Or Rulk.

crippler

Rulk would be perfect. That way, next year, we could have a very special Jeph Loeb event next year - Rulk Kills the Marvel Universe. There seems to be literally no one that can beat him if they keep writing it as it's being written now.

Nothing offends me more than Rulk beating Thor with his own hammer.

Once you write that into your comic book universe, nothing can ever be the same again.

What were you thinking Marvel? Go fuck yourselves.

@Labor_Days - My comment was completely disingenuous. I think that Hulk beating Thor was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen in comics. That being said however, if Rulk can beat Thor, he'd also present a credible threat to Loki. Something that I'm not sure the Void would represent?

Maybe Osborn is pulling the ol' "put your hand in your pocket and tell them you have a gun" gag.

Maybe it is just a cardboard cutout. Doom will think it's Richards. Namor will think it's the Gordon's Fisherman. Loki will think it's Thor. Emma wil think it's Jean Grey. The Hood will think it's a Wolvie still pissed about his lil' Wolvie being shot off.

100% likelihood it is the Void/Sentry. Conversation is done.

I disagree, The Beyonder doesn't need a reason other than boredom. He summoned the heroes and villains of Marvel to battle for his own amusement. Then he created a fake Manhattan to play City of Heroes: Marvel. I think this could be him playing the villain game for a twist.

Although I hadn't considered the Void, I agree it is as likely. Especially since Bendis does seem to want to make Sentry relevant. However I don't think that will sit well with the Sentry-haters of the internet. I think Sentry/Void needs to earn that kind of role before he is dropped into it.

How about the info that he was a "new" character (when the group of villains were originally teased months ago)?

Well considering the cover for the new Punisher series has Sentry on the cover....and the summary (I believe) says Norman has a new bodyguard....So the Void/Sentry could make sense.

Although I would imagine Doom, Emma, and definitely Loki could take care of Sentry.

Does anyone else hate the fact that Norman Osbourne is suddenly the Lex Luthor of the Marvel U? This is a guy who was a lame Spider-Man villain, who never had any interaction with any other hero, ever, until Luke Cage beat him to within an inch of his life, and all of a sudden he's this big mover and shaker? Why would anybody fear this guy? Spidey was kicking his ass when he was 15. The Avengers would destroy the Green Goblin in about 12 seconds. i don't care how much political power he has. And Doom would laugh in this douche's face if he was summoned for a meeting. I love the idea of the Cabal, but I think somebody else should have really been in Norman's position.

That's actually kind of a good point. But I have to say that they've been building Norman up to be a criminal mastermind through the last 8-10 years of spidey comics.
And his power level isn't up to par, but that's why it makes sense for him to get somebody like the Void as a bodyguard.

Have you picked up the Thunderbolts since Civil War? Or the Romita drawn Amazing SpiderMan issues? They've been making Osborn into a bit of a media/public darling. It seems like they started laying the ground work since the ending of Civil War.

I don't read Thunderbolts, but I have been reading Amazing Spider-Man. Yeah, it's not totally out of the blue or anything. They have been building him up. it's just that the guy was a looney wack job for the last 40 years, and then for the last 3 he's been Marvel's Luthor. I just don't believe he's mentally stable enough to do all the stuff he's been doing lately. This is a guy who just wants to kill Spider-Man. he doesn't really commit other crimes. he doesn't rob banks, he doesn't plan city wide terror campaigns. he has one thought: KILL SPIDER-MAN. I don't see him being the guy in charge of the thunderbolts, let alone the whole Super Hero community.

And people are acting like they don't know he's the green Goblin. But wasn't it revealed he was the Goblin after Luke Cage beat the snot out of him? I could have sworn it became common knowledge, as the news was filming that beat down and arrest. Or did Norman ALSO make a deal with the Devil? ;-)

That's actually not true.
He doesn't want to kill Spider-Man, he wants to destroy Peter Parker and ruins his life. But he also very much enjoy the battle they have. At one point he wanted to make him his heir. And he also constructed the whole Ben Reilley thing, and kill Peters unborn baby.
He also did the whole thing with kidnapping May and forcing Peter to free him from prison.

It's not like he's just flying around doing crazy shit. And all of this stuff have been in like the last 10-12 years. So it's not something new.

I have no real problem with Osborn running the Illuminati... although I do think Marvel decided a few things several years back. They realized that Spider-Man had no true "Joker", that they went and killed his scariest villain along with Gwen Stacey, so they brought him back. And now they've decided they want him to be their "Luthor" too... which means you have a villain with Luthor's power and influence, but the Joker's sanity. When you put it that way, it's intriguing.

I love The Void/Sentry! And I love how Marvel (and Bendis) keep stubbornly cramming him down our throats no matter how much we retch and heave!

Seriously, though, I like the character(s).

I would imagine they addressed this in Thunderbolts somewhere. But since I don't read any book that has Venom in it every month, I would have missed that.
