Turn off hiding file extensions for known file types for one lol.

http://www.cam.ac.uk/cs/docs/faq/m5.html

And delete the IE icon from everything... if you REALLy need it go to start>run and type iexplore ;) Also, never ever ever accept any programs via IM or email no matter who it is, because they may not be them sending it. If you aren't using firefox, use firefox.

Do you guys know of any good firewalls?Linksys WRT54G router. It has a built in firewall ... as do just about all other routers. HArdware is MUCH better than software.

For anything else the built in Windows firewall is just fine.

Do you guys know of any good firewalls?

i use my Linksys Router's Firewall, Windows Firewall, a cracked copy of ZoneAlarm Pro and a custom firewall i designed (i used to be a very, VERY good/dangerous hacker so i know how hackers try to get in).

How would you get past the NAT to a local machine?

Wow. Just wow ... Paranoia at its finest. With a properly configured hardware firewall, there should be no need for a local firewall installed on a computer. Having said that, I do also run Windows default firewall for when I am travelling (like the hotel connection I am currently using).

Some people overload their systems in the name of security, when common sense and safe computing practices would be far better.

yes i am paranoid, and i use antivirus, anti-spyware, and 3 software firewalls mostly so i don't have to pay attention to what i do on the web to make sure i don't get virii/hacked/spyware...

You were never a hacker.

Thats it.

I dont have anything to add... Other than, you should stop lying and possibly if you are a hacker/cracker/coder you should know these things?

Common Sense V1.0 is quite good for keeping out Spyware, etc. It seems to be an uninstalled option for many people though, both in tech and among users.

A very, VERY good/dangerous hacker? And you're too poor to buy a copy of Zonealarm (as if it's worth cracking)? Oh dear.

I'm not a very, VERY good/dangerous hacker but I am a bit leet. I run a Linksys WRT54G on my home gaming network and Firewall-1 (not cracked) on a Crossbeam C2 for my home 'everything else' network.

Antivirus is I think these days rapidly becoming the least important thing for protection. Have a decent antivirus, double or even triple up on antispam/spyware (run them scheduled), get a good NATing/SPI hardware firewall and learn how to set it up properly. That, plus the aforementioned common sense is all you really need. And periodic, incremental backups of course.
