I am doing a course in Public Policy and the Internet, in January. I am making a list of examples of tech-related policy issues. It includes the obvious stuff like net neutrality, municiple wi-fi, science and math education, intellectual property. What other good examples could I give them?

HIPAA, PIPEDA (its Canadian, but has implications for cross border data storage issues for companies doing business in the US), SEC 17a 3-4, Sarbanes-Oxley.

porn.
I gotta admit, I am too Hoosier old school to talk about porn with students. I know. I know.
The data searching issues, sarbannes Oxley and some of our Internet treaties are things I forgot to include.

Here is another interesting one for you ...
Once a client of a financial institution ceases being a client, records for that client are supposed to be removed from data systems. OK, so your system does a soft delete of the records, then those records are purged form the system. End of story right?
Wrong. What about the backups. Data from that client still exists.
What is a company's responsibility to a former client for the removal of archived data?
You might guess that this is the world that my professional life lives :)

Another issue is making sure public employees have access to current and up-to-date tech products to make their jobs easier and to help them serve the public better. A lot of government employees I've encountered are using old and inefficient technology which costs more to support than newer tech. I think the FAA is still using 1970's mainframes for air traffic control.

I would do an analysis of the difference between the way information
was distributed in the jet-age vs. the space-age, and demonstrate
how the new ability of communication crosses all the language barriers
that typically put a bottle-neck on new ideas. Incorporate the advent
of engines like Babelfish and Wikipedia.

Then I'd do a little side-project on filters. Trusted content. And, of course, how to Digg.
