I needed a DVD player for the living room TV, so I just bought a PS2 slim so I can watch DVD's and play games on it. I bought one used at EB Games for $49 (I guess they're on sale now). It plays games just fine (which are on DVD-ROM) but won't play any DVD film. It says something like "no data".
Is there some fix for this? Like resetting it or reinstalling firmware? There's a reset button but that seems to do nothing.

EBGames should be answering that question...

Googling show all sort of issues with DVD (movie) playback on the PS2.
If its not already, try to keep it horizontal.

Also, can we assume these are original discs and not "backup media"?
Make sure the discs are clean as well.

It may also be defective.

Yep, they're all original, clean discs. One DVD I tried was even brand new -- just out of its packaging. I guess I'll just take it to EB Games for an exchange.

I bought a copy of NBA Live 2007 for my PS2. What a sucky game. It amazes me that NBA Live 2004 is 5 times better than the NEWER game. The camera options aren't good, and it's hard to see the players because they're so far away and tiny. In NBA Live 2004, it really zooms up on the action. Plus the playability and game play of 2007 are clunky, and it's hard to move your player to a specific area for a play or rebound. And the graphics really don't look any better. The extra shading just looks like dirt on their arms. 2004 graphics are a little more cartoony but look better and more colorful.

NCAA Basketball (2005) and NCAA baseball (2006) are both pretty abysmal but better than NBA Live 2007. "Gran Turismo -- A Spec" is a real fun game and only $3. NBA Ballers is alright. EB Games had the box for NBA Jam, but not the game itself! Doh! That one looks fun.

First problem with this game is it's made by EA, so it is already classed as rubbish. Then look at the platforms it's available for Playstation 2, Xbox, PC, Playstation Portable, and Xbox360, oh dear. So, it's really not looking good for this game at all, any game that has such a stupid mismatch set of platforms is bound to be fail.

eh my ps2 plays dvds whenever it feels like it... and it hardly ever feels up to that challenge.

I bought "Brunswick Pro Bowling" for $2 off ebay, still factory sealed. It's a fun PS2 game. You can play with multiple players using just one controller, and just pass it to each other when it's their turn to bowl. Some friends were over, and we played it for like 3 hours -- a sign of a good game, and they're not even gamers. The sounds, sights and game play are realistic, graphics are great, and there are plenty of characters and different bowling centers to choose from. I haven't tried AMF Bowling, but the IGN scores for AMF Bowling are pretty abysmal.
