A while ago Tekzilla featured software that allowed them to do screencaptures and manipulate it in different ways. (I think they use it for all their freebie download of the week segments).
Anyone know the name of that software, I can't find it...

You could use SnapzX Pro. It is not open source but does a great job for OSX platform.

For a static snapshot, nearly all PC operating systems (Windows, Linux, etc.) capture the screen with the printscreen button. But you want to them paste it into something so you can manipulate it.
The gimp is a nice, free, open source image editor that can capture screens, all, or just a window, with or without decoration. Then you can cut, crop, change, etc.
