This week, iFanboy takes a look at the comic book death. It can be poignant and touching, or a cheap marketing ploy to sell more books. No character is immune to the reaper's touch, but then again, sooner or later, they'll be back.

The death of a superhero is a bit of a misnomer, because all comic book readers know that, given enough time, they will return from the grave. There are so many characters who have been killed and been resurrected that it's almost impossible to keep track of them.

But there are great stories about superheroes biting the big one, such as The Death of Captain America, The Death of Captain Marvel, or Batman: A Death in the Family.

When does it work? When is it just a stunt? Ron, Josh, and Conor go over some of the more memorable deaths, as well as the more ill conceived variety.

You guys left out the Martian Manhunter:( I miss him....

Also with Barry, it seems like he has been dead so long, that even as hokey as it is, I had a fist pump moment when he returned. Also, have they even explained how he is alive? Either way, I'm sure Geoff Johns' mini will kick ass.

There have been some very strong hints that Jean Grey is still alive and is now Mutant Zero in the Initiative books.

edit: Nevermind, it seems MZ is someone else: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutant_Zero

That would sort of defeat the purpose of taking the week off, wouldn't it?

Hey gang,

I shopping on a military installation in Washington State and happened upon the magazine section and came upon this...

Ultimate Spiderman issue 129.....
Ironman brought Gwen Stacy back and Aunt May was in the process of trying to get her enrolled in school....
Does this count as one of those???

OMG........

Keep up the good work!!

The Ultimate version of Marvel has nothing to do with the real marvel continuity.

Gwen had died in Ultimate U though, somehow she bonded with Carnage or something which brought her back.

Anyone remember Frank Miller's Daredevil #181 when Bullseye slayed Elektra?
It turned Matt Murdock inside out and then Daredevil paralyzed Bullseye by dropping him from a telephone wire or power line. Frank Miller's DD and the X-Men Pheonix saga were what brought me into comics. I think I was 12 at the time and totally amazed by the writing and artwork of comics.

Apologies to Ron, but Jean Grey has died three times. In the early 90's there was an issue where she is killed by a Sentinel. She then resides in the White Queen's mind for a few issues until Beast, I think, figures out where she is and brings her back to life.

I really hate her as a character, honestly. When she was alive the X-Men basically revolved around her. And... she's so boring as a character, to me anyway.

I think technically she was only brain dead in that arc.

Didn't superman die in a worlds finest comic before the whole doomsday thing?

That may be the case, Gobo. However, 'someone will die' is the gimmick they used to sell the arc. Everyone knew she wasn't going to stay dead... but that was the hype point of that arc.

I agree with those who posted earlier regarding Gwen Stacy in Ultimate Spiderman. One of the selling points of the Ultimate U was the unnoficial 'no ressurections' rule. Well.. so much for that. I suppose we should let the story wrap up, but, ah, there she is in Ultimatum #1. Looks like she's going to stick. I guess the question is, will the Ultimate Universe stick around as well?
