I spent like, two hours the other night surfing the Interwebs, looking for new music... and really didn't find much that I liked. Either I'm just out of touch, or the music world has passed me by, or punk really is dead (yeah right!) but I just didn't catch many sounds that I dug or even kind of dug. I dunno. I checked out a lot of stuff that made some popular lists this past year like Sigur Ros and Vampire Weekend (which I've been trying to like for six months now but just can't) and the Manchester Orchestra and got nada, but I did happen to check out Vitamin Party and The Heartless Bastards and they may have made fans of me. I guess I'll just have to see what 2009 holds.

I've been sampling the hell out of "new" (to me at least) bands for over a week now. And I've tried out, honest to god, something like 80 acts in that time. Some good, some great, a lot of "not for me"... and some downright fucking atrocious. And now I've finally heard something by "Millionaires". And honestly, I think they are the final straw in my ever giving "popular" music any sort of respect or second of my time for, oh, say about another decade or so. It'll probably take at least that amount of time for my brain to vomit their "sound" out of my skull... fucking seriously?! People listen to and actually like this shit?! It may sound "Get off my lawn"ish, but I might spend the next two weeks punching every teenager I run into in the face for this, even if they had nothing to do with it... Fuck, now I wish I actually had a lawn... jesus...

I like the Fleet Foxes. but they're soooooo many great Freak Folk/New Weird America acts out there that are way better and deserve all the press and popularity the Foxes have gotten. Bands and Musicians like Akron/Family, Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newson, Will Oldham, Ariel Pink, Jana Hunter, Animal Collective, The Dodos, ect.

For reasons unbeknowst to me, I've had Bright Eyes stuck in the noggin lately and I haven't listened to them for years. For anyone who cares, the culprit was "Perfect Sonnet" which I haven't listened to since I was 12, when it came out. I'd like to think it holds up, though Bright Eyes as a whole has lost its luster for me.

Stuff I like off of this thread so far – Enter Shikari and Vitamin Party
Stuff I didn’t care for last year: MGMT, Andrew Bird, Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, Cut Copy.
I tried most of these bands and could not make it through the album (Vampire Weekend, MGMT) or in some cases a song (Fleet Foxes).
Some people I know keep saying I should listen to the new Kings of Leon album. I’ve given it one try and it had some pretty good songs, but then it had some really retro 70’s rock type songs. I do not like almost any 50’s, 60’s, or 70’s rock. But I’m going to give them another go anyway.
What I am listening to currently: Blue Stahli – Antisleep Vol. 01,
Los Campesinos: - Hold on Now Youngster
Neutral Milk Hotel, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
The Weakerthans - Left and Leaving
Fear Factory – Archtype
Uncrowned – Angels and Devils
Mac Lethal – 11:11
The Gaslight Anthem – Sing or Swim
Rise Against – Appeal to Reason
Skinny Puppy – The Greater Right of the Wrong
Innerpartysystem
The Mountain Goats – Tallahassee
Machines of Loving Grace - Concentration

K-naan is an MC, not a band, if anyone was wondering. Grew up in Mogadishu, Somalia; his dad sent him Nas tapes, and he taught himself English with them. He's a joy.
I'm not sure if I pimped Blu, another great, great MC in last year's thread, but if you have even a passing interest in good hip hop, get your hands on a copy of Blu & Exile - Below the Heavens, and if you like that, he has two other albums out from last year, too. Blu & Mainframe is solid, but horribly equalized, or else it would be just as good as Below the Heavens.

You have to tell it now, you realize that right? Its more awkward then long.
It was a week long and a few hours away so I went with a few friends and we crashed at someones grandmothers house. She was an old Ukrainian lady and insisted on the first day that we do some shopping and sent us to the mall (this was after we turned down her offer of coloring books). The mall was essentially a department store that was closed for renovations and a dollar store having a going out of business sale. They were selling bulk wedding gifts on the cheap and we decided to buy some.
K'naans set was one of the last ones we went to that night, there was minor drinking involved. We brought the packages of bubbles that came with the wedding stuff and blew them all over the field until we were asked to stop. So then we took out one of the congratulatory greeting cards, crossed out the bit about weddings, wrote something about him playing a good set, and I walked up and gave it to him. He stared awkwardly at me for a minute. Read it. Then looked at the guy next to me and asked if he wanted to go backstage.
This was the same fest where I met Chumbwamba coming out of the portapotties. Good times.

My favorite part of the story is that he didn't ask you backstage in spite of your efforts. Still, well done sir. Well done

I just got back into Live at Earl's Court by Morrissey .. Fantastic version of "The More You Ignore Me ..."
Since there's so many of us Smiths/Morrissey fans in here, I'd like to throw out a recommendation. Nightmare of You has a kind of Smiths feel to them but are just a tad more Alternative (I think) I wanna say. They've only got a self-titled and an EP out right now with a second record due in June I believe. Definately a band worth checking out with fantastic chorus' and hooks.

I heard the new 311 single "Hey You" today. Pretty good, alot better than the rencent crap they've been making. It seems that their albums have been pretty lame since From Chaos (I do like that song Creatures For Awhile, though). This is probably because all of their song are lacking that rocking edge that was so abundant on stuff like their self-titled album, so its good to see them rocking again. I just hope the rest of the album is as good, I hate not liking 311's stuff.

God Help The Girl (Fave songs so far: Pretty eve in the tub & A down and dusky blond)
The Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca (Fave songs so far: Stillness is the move & Remade horizon)
After a lackluster 08, 09's turning out to be a pretty great year for music.

Songs:
Atlas by Battles- The first time I heard this song I thought "why would anyone commit this to tape?" but after a few listens it grew on me and now I think it's fantastic!
Kid A by Radiohead- This is a really nice, laidback song even if it has Thom Yorke singing like a retarded robot.
Impossible Germany by Wilco- Never really listened to Wilco but this was great. FANTASTIC solo at the end.
Crying Lightning by Arctic Monkeys- This is definitely a grower. The first minute and a half is a bit unispired (though it's growing on me) but the chorus is strong. The Strokes and Queens Of The Stone Age are definite influences.
The Day The Whole Day Went Away by Nine Inch Nails- Ever since I heard this on the Terminator Salvation trailer this has been stuck in my head. Love the fuzzy guitar.

Mercury by Bloc Party- Great song and the video is probably the most batshit crazy (and fun) thing Bloc Party has ever done.
Bulletproof by La Roux- This a good solid pop song. Nothing mind-blowing but fun.
10th Avenue Freeze Out by The Boss- SO GOOD. Wish he´d played it at the concert I went to.
Country Sad Ballad Man by Blur- I picked this up in a best of 1997 compilation and twas awesome. One of my favourite Blur songs. Better then Song 2 imo. I wonder why it hasn´t gotten much recognision.
Wake Up Dead Man by U2- This is my favourite U2 song. Again deserves wider recognision. Off the Pop album which is treated far to harshly. The last time U2 Made anything interesting.

We've still got some pretty good local music stores here in the Burgh, down at Eides and Brave New World, but they still barely have half the stuff I'm looking for at any given time. I've pretty much gone completely digital with my music buying these days. The only alternative I've really found is ordering from Interpunk and the shipping that way kills.

You are totally in the right!!! Rod Stewart from The Jeff Beck Group all the way till around the late 70's made some fantastic music, nothing world changing, but good music nonetheless. Anything past the the early 80's is pretty much shit, though.
But all thats coming from a guy who likes the music of George Michael/Wham!, Dolly Parton, Sonny & Cher, Judy Garland, ABBA, Justin Timberlake, ect.(My girlfriend calls me gay, as well)

Both very different with Jay-Z being good but not as good as past albums. And ICP was the return of that happy feeling inside I've been missing from their music since Wraith Shangra-La. Last but not least Paramore's Brand New Eyes, my guilty pleasure. Their albums are always good with every feeling you could get from a song plus Haley's vocals are awesome.
