Who all is hitting up Wondercon this year? I'm planning on going to this so I can hang out with my Bro and also go to an awesome convention I've never gone to before.

Also hope to hang out with some iFanboy crowd.

I might go, i do get my paid vacation time soon...an i went to comic con last year an kicked my comic lovin ass into gear once again.

I need to see how much a hotel close by would cost...an what i will need, cause im also still planning for Comic Con 09 as well.

Yeah I really wish that Cooke would be there again this year. He's probably one of the only creators right now that I would want to snag an autograph from.

Cooke is the only guy I got an autograph from at Baltimore this year. He drew a sort of femme fatale head in his art book (I never bring books to get signed, just my sketch book). Nice guy.

I looks like I just might be able to attend this. Now, I know that there was a show about this, but does anyone have any tips? (This would be my first con) Now, if I wanted a Jim Lee sketch would I be waiting in line for three hours? Should I bring a lot of cash? Will I be seeing a lot of books that I will need to buy? What should I do there that I can't do anytime else?
Thanks

Find out who you enjoy most that is going, cause for the most part there will be lines for autographs and what not. maybe think about a series you want to pick up or something.

and most of all just have fun. be friendly and make some new friends or bring some with you.

As Early as possible. Some places give tickets for signings and panels at the beginning of the day.

Sooooo, like at 8 am, or earlier, or later...?

jmstump
01-13-2009, 04:27 AM
It looks like the first day they don't open till noon. I'm not too sure about Wondercon, since it's my first year, but at Chicago people would line up super early. They opened around 10 in the morning for Chicago and people lined up at 6 am or earlier.

To get a better estimate it would probably help if someone who's been to Wondercon posted.

I also recommend if you haven't getting you ticket online. It always makes things easier.

I may go since I live only an hour away. It would be my first con. How much cash should I take? I'm pretty broke but I'd like to get some Spidey and Criminal back issues on the cheap. And a lot of trades. How good are the prices? Should I really go the full 3 days (I probably can't make it to the con until 4 on Friday)? Lots of questions.

Its $15 bucks on line for a three day pass if your under 17, twenty if your older.

Take as much cash as you can lol

Earlier the better as well. If they open at noon dont get there any later than 8am ;) but try an wait earlier, thats part of the con!

Bring something to do in the line tho.

miyamotofreak
01-13-2009, 11:58 PM
So should I bother getting the three day pass if I probably won't make it on the first day? I'll just take a day off from school maybe. Unfortunately I am 18 and low on cash. So $15 off the bat isn't bad but I really, really want to buy a ton of crap. For the record, depending on this con experience I may also head to San Diego too. Also count me in for a iFanboy meetup!

Yes I highly suggest a DS if you have it. Picto chat can be tons of fun in a line. If you see a penisaurus rex you're most likely in the room that I am :P. Seriously though bring things like a DS, comics, and other things to occupy your time.

If anyone is looking for a good cheap place to stay check out:

http://www.greentortoise.com/san-francisco-hostel/index.php

I work here but it is awesome, I don't say that lightly. It's a party hostel, a place to have a good time at when the city closes. We have free wifi, 3 dinners a week, breakfast every day, a sauna, a huge ballroom, pub crawls, and a helpful staff to get you where you need to go. Dorm beds are $25 a night, and private rooms are $59. I am excited about Wondercon as it will be my first chance to attend since I moved out here to the Bay Area. If you come stay and like the suggestion ask for Kyle and we can say hi.

Yeah, I'm going as well. I went last year (my first con) and it was fun. I didn't get to see a lot of creators cuz I was still new to the whole experience. Some of the movie panels were huge, but overall its a nice comfortable setting. Jim Lee's line was long by other standers, but still not terribly huge. Maybe 50 people when I saw it. I will probably be going on Friday and Saturday, not sure about Sunday. I have been waiting and waiting to see what the schedule was and what other creators will be there, besides the special guest and artist alley.

I will also say that I have been to an Isotope party (Millar and Harris for War Heroes) and they are a ton of fun. I went with the wife though, who was not all that interested in comics. So if iFanpeeps are going to be there...yay!

yeah, except the person I would go with was down for anything and never complained. Going alone is ok for a little bit. I noticed the con goers are a little, how do I say, socially phobic. Of course I've only been to Fanime, that could be a totally different crowd.

Autographs to get (if I have the money):

-Honky Tonk Man

-Greg "The Hammer" Valentine

I am so excited for this! Better panels than last year I think

Not necessarily. It's possible that he will be at a booth after a panel, but the panels are just for speaking.

Yeah, I was looking at that one as well. Seeing as how he isn't listed as being in artist alley. He might be signing at the DC booth. If that's the case, DC's website might put out their schedule of when their creators will be signing. I don't know what the chances are of getting anything done right before or after a panel, never tried that before.

Hey I was thinking of doing another get together with everyone on Sunday sometime after the con in a more relaxed, less drinking atmosphere for everyone. Mostly I assume that there will be some people going that are under 21 or won't be coming out to the Isotope. Of course I'm under a lot of assumptions there. One being that some people will not be able to make it and the other that under 21 people can't come.

Anyways what does everyone think? Would anyone be up for sitting down for some food and talking about what they did for the weekend?

I'm pretty sure they don't close the doors unless they reach capacity. Chances are, that won't really happen too often though. Nothing at all against the two panels you want to go to, but I don't think they will reach capacity in the rooms. Hell, even with the large movie screening room they have, I don't think they reached capacity on that one last year. If possible, check out the line for each panel before you head in. Thats a pretty good indication as to whether it will fill up or not

Well it's later (heh) and although NYCC was only a week before....there were some suprising annoucements for me:

(All of this comes from reading newsarama btw)

'Greg Rucka will revamp Queen and Country with a #1 issue and put them in color'
-I might not have read his series yet....but if this is a serious revamp of the series then I might give it a try.

'Rucka will also come out with a 3rd volume of Whiteout'
-Not surprising when the film (only god knows when that is coming out btw) is being released soon.

'More Ultimate Captain America?'
-I would love to see more of this happen because I love the Ultimate version of the character. Shame it's not a teaser for an ongoing though. Maybe a mini with Cap in the war?

'Paul Dini Will write two Battle for the Cowl mini's. Streets of Gotham and Sirens'
-I am more for the Sirens mini (or one shot). Because it's Dini writing basically 'Gotham Girls' but with a more adult twist on it. Ivy, Harley, and Selina? Sold!

'Judd Winick will write Batman after Battle for the Cowl'
-Well I guess I had to drop the other Bat title eventually.....Winick can go (you know what) cause I anit wasting money on him destroying the new Batman.

'The Final Crisis HC will carry Superman Beyond and FC: Submit'
-Woot! I called it. Although it isnt gonna carry the Last Rites issues for Batman....but at least it will give readers a better view on Final Crisis in general with the other two stories involved.

'IDW will continue their Presidential Material series by releasing Barack Obama #1 (of 2)'
-Great....just what we need more of in comics...although IDW did do a great job with the McCain/Obama one-shot.

'IDW will also collect the entire series of Rocketeer in one huge trade'
-I love me some Rocketeer.

Any thoughts on this or more news from the con?

Hey guys, came back from Wondercon (couldn't make isotope) and had a great time. Came to the podcast thing late (Brubaker was higher on the priority list by a pinch) but it was cool and I got a Hurm shirt. If anyone was wondering I was the guy with a black jacket, black shirt, blue jeans, glasses, and an unfortunate breakout of acne. Saw quite a few iFanboy guys and everyone was nice. I'm not going tomorrow (not enough panels to be worth it and I'm broke) but I'll be heading to SF. Left pretty quickly from the podcast thing since it seemed you guys looked busy and in need of rest(Josh looked straight grizzly). I'm pretty tired from just one day so it's pretty amazing that you guys do this for con season. Thanks, and I'll see everyone at SD!

I was at the DC panel for a good 20 min before I released it's just news that I can find on the internet in 5 min and a ton of joking. Winick's list of ten things he'll do with Batman was funny though.

General thoughts:
They need more space. It's ridiculous how stuffed it is. If they can reduce the line section a lot (which I totally found unnessacary anyway) it'd be okay. But as is it's pretty hard to breathe sometimes.
I learned that Joss Whedon is massive. He has an insane fanbase.
Was very comics focused. I thought there would be more movie and videogames stuff. Not a bad thing but thinking about it, the diversity of San Diego CC is probably a good thing as it's nice to take a break playing SFII.
Small panels are the most fun.
I could not find a single fucking trade of Criminal anywhere (I'm missing Lawless). Now I get Brubaker's complaints about superhero distribution. Also could not find a Walking Dead #9 Trade outside of the Image booth. Or any Battlefields stuff. Way too superhero-y.
I got the Savage Dragon comic-con variant. IT IS FUCKING AWESOME. That is all.

The books Dini is writing are both ongoings, not minis.

It was a fun expierience. The panels were incredibly boring though. Like, no one really cared too much. Mostly coming from the audience, but also some of the panelist were that way.

Got some great sketches and talked to awesome artist. Mike Mignola and I talked about pancakes and I nearly wet myself :D I met the artist behind the Hellboy animated movies and the Spectacular Spider-man show. He likes to go by "Cheeks" and he is so awesome. My new mancrush ^__^

But best news of all...I met the iFanboys and talked on their panel! Went on stage, shot the shit, probable came off kinda goofy though cuz I was a tad nervous. I would have gone to the Isotope "100 Bullets" party, but couldn't make it. Married men do not make their own decisions...lets just leave it at that. But I did make it out to the first stop of the Tiki Tour for like an hour. Met Ron and Conor there, but they might have been a little out of it when I said hi. I said I was a member and Conor directed me to find Josh so I could get a lap dance. haha, good stuff.

Highlight was meeting Matt Fraction though, and getting a sketch from him. It was for the Hero Initiative, and he sketched me an elephant dressed up as Thor. Awesome. James Robinson was nice. Couldn't track down Ed Brubaker, so didn't get to meet him.

Anyways, tons more happened and I am so tired and I want to sleep.

Yeah, the Brubaker panel was during the iFanboy one. Toughest decision I had to make, but I went to the Brubaker and caught the last 30 min of the iFanboy bit. Great panels.
Also VERY strong female attendance at the Brubaker panel. Older women, I may add. Maybe they were there for Zoe Bell (who is my new crush).

Wait there was an ifanboy panel?....And some of you guys got to be up there? Aww....

I wish I could be up there. Then again I imagine a lot of booing....and I believe conor and drake would murder me before I got the mic. :)

Tell me about it. I was torn up until 2 hours before. In the end, I wanted to meet the guys and just have fun. I went to the Fraction spotlight and, although I enjoyed some parts, overall it wasn't too fun. I still wish Bru would have posted his signing schedule, the program said he was only signing on Sunday. Funny story, I saw him and Fraction in front of their hotel on Friday before the show. I thought it would be dickish to stop and bug them before the show though. But I squeezed my wife's hand so hard and got all giddy.

If given the chance to talk to Conor more afterwards, I have no doubt that the conversation would have veered towards hatin' on you and Deadpool

Hey you know what? At least you two are thinking about me. ;)

Seriously though, what was that panel like?

At first, I didn't know what it would be about. But essentially, it turned into a podcast. I'm not sure if the guys recorded it (ugh, I'll sound so nervous and goofy) but it turned into a discussion of what are you reading now and what did you buy at the con. Logan and Lene (I'm pretty sure that's their names, sorry if I'm wrong) from I Read Comics brought different points of views and insight into the talk, which was cool.

By the way, I got a really awesome Flash ring from the DC booth. It is so cheesy and I can't possibly wear it anywhere outside of the con, but I love the hell out of it.

Was anyone else at the thing? I mean other then you and Gabe. I'm sure you sounded fine....but ignore the laughter coming from me. Laughing at something else ;)

Do you have the pic of the ring? It cant look that bad.

If there was more time I was going to go up and mention you nextchampion. Almost everything you say I disagree with (though no hate is ever involved). The panel was very funny I thought. Conor's sexy voice was just all sorts of :lol

You know what? I'm actually shocked you didnt talk about me.

Come on drake, miyamoto, anyone else.....you could've had your chance to tear me a new one. Not even a mention on my fixiation on Deadpool? So many jokes missed with no comment on it...

Guess I'll have to teach you guys a lesson the next con....or at least the next time there is an ifanboy panel....or if I have money at all to go to it....but you'll get yours....you'll see.

I was only there on Saturday dude. Hopefully we can all have a giant meetup in SD. For me it's a massive drive but it'll definitely be worth it.

lol I felt embarrassed just saying that I was drakedangerz from the site. Its a pretty dorky name when you say it out loud, and I wasn't sure how many of the people there actually frequented the site. So I wasn't gonna bust out with "by the way, lets talk about this guy from the site." Although something really funny happened, as soon as I said who I was Josh states "oh, you don't look like darkwing duck!" I was glad they recognized my avatar. The fact that my existence is acknowledged by the iFanboys is enough for me.

And I don't know if I would have the energy for SDCC, let alone the funds. A month before it I'm going back to Hawaii with wife and friends. Unless I can get a cheap flight and room with 10 people, SDCC probably won't happen.

Oh I would totally make it a big deal if I introduced myself. Make an ass of myself. Yeah it makes me look bad; but you would remember me.

Maybe we could have a mock boxing match during the thing?....You see this is what happens when it's late at night. I just suddenly chirp up and gets a huge ideas in my brain...I need to sleep.

Well he is all over iFanboy. You can smell his stench almost as much as the trio.
But yeah I'd be embarassed if I went up and said, "my name is .... and ... in the forums" followed by Alcoholics Anonymous "Hi ..." (thanks Josh). How'd isotope go anyhow? I was wondering since it was still a comic book store if under 21's were still allowed. I turned 18 but I'm not a big drinker so I never bothered to get any fake ID.
Just curious, what is the latest time I should get tickets for San Diego? My room is already covered if I decide to go (which I probably will).

You know, that is the first thing I think we've agreed on since I've joined here :)

Ha! I can only imagine how I smell.....Probably a mix of taco bell, axe body spray, and what's the word....oh yeah salty garbage.

I wish I could afford to go to SDCC. I dont know if I'll have the money by then, nor do I think I could travel there. I'd be scared out of my mind down there. A lot of sun and fresh air? Too much for me man. I'll take my depressing mulch smell of Jersey and constant cloudiness thank you.

Organize some East Coast iFanboy cross country trip. I'm sure people will be up for it.
