Nod32 (http://www.eset.com/products/windows.php) is nice and light and it is what I use, but Kaspersky (http://usa.kaspersky-labs.com/products/anti-virus.php) has finally come of age(3years ago it was a joke) and is the better AV overall. They each catch viri equally well except when a virus is embedded within file or within archived format; this is where Kaspersky excels. I myself am very unlikely to open a strange power point file and infect myself, but for your mom Kaspersky may be the better bet.

Same here! For three years I went without anti-virus software though, and didn't have any problems.

As far as free anti-virus software AniVira AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/) is the best out there.
Some independent tests 1 (http://www.av-comparatives.org/index.html?http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/overview.html), 2 (http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2006/09/04/and-the-best-antivirus-is/).

as far as my security goes, it's: avg and windows defender (ms antispyware) running in the background, windows xp firewall on (i don't really have any need for a software firewall, because i know what's on my system, what's running, what's not (malware), and my linksys wrt54g (v3.0, latest firmware) with nat enabled works fine as a hardware firewall of sorts), and a list a bad web sites composed by spybot's "immunize" feature. ooh! not to mention, adaware.

Im a fan of nod32 as well - doesnt use much system resources and it stops pretty much everything. Though i sometimes run a scan with AVG as a secondary AV just to be on the safe side, its never found anything.

I have been using AVG for over a year now, works great, fast and simple. I tryed installing Norton, but it accually installed spyware and shit on my computer.
AVG all the way.

I use AVG exclusively, I have put it on hundereds of computers and never had any trouble with it. I also have used the non free version of AVG in a doctors office and I happen to like that. Avast is in my opinion garbage, but it has been a year or so since I tried it. The last I knew it did not do sceduled scans or updates, which is my only beef with it. I am sure that they have gotten with the program by now.
For a firewall I prefer Sygate and it is all I use, it is a bit hard to find now though since Norton bought them out and buried them someplace. I loathe Norton, they are so resource intensive and get themselves into every part of your computer. McAfee is not much better, but they are better.
As for the online trendmicro scan, that is definately worth an occasional stop, I like that one.

I went from Norton to BitDefender to Avast to AVG. Overall BitDefender had the best GUI and it was pretty good, but i'm not gonna pay for it or even bother *not* paying for it if i can get AVG free. Avast just seemed weird to me, like a media player or something. Bad GUI. Norton sucked for obvious reasons. AVG is ok but it could be a little simpler to use. Cant beat it's performance though. I didn't really ever use the "shield" or "monitor" parts of the programs except for murphy firewall on bitdefender. I figure if im stupid enough not to scan a file before i execute it i deserve to get the virus. It's good training also.

And you know, that is all that there is to it. Scan it first and you won't get virus', I have told people that for as long as I can remember and I don't get virus' and they do.

That's not necesarily a guaranty. Many virus makers test their creations with virus scanners before releasing them. That said, a simple scan is generally enough to prevent infection as definitions are updated to catch thoe viruses in a short amount of time.

For those of you who are planning on using Kaspersky, you might want to try out AOL's AntiVirusShield (AVS) after they work out their EULA problems (They got tagged for leaving the user open to tracking and possible marketing from them which you can supposedly opt out of now) it's underpinnings are all Kaspersky and it's free. That being said, I still use a combination of Avast and Avira Antivir. I like Avast because it covers everything coming into the computer like email, usenet, etc., while I like AntiVir for it's quick scan capabilities. I use spyware blaster with spybot S&D, AdAware and I still use Sygate 5.6 personal firewall even though it was bought by symantec and will not be supported anymore. Have yet to have a virus and adware has virtually disappeared. Do not like MS Antispyware.

McAfee VirusShield.
Spybot S&D.
Hardware Firewall.
I haven't had a virus since the early 90's - and even then it was because I was purposefully trying to infect my machine to test out AV apps.

I am using ZoneAlarm Suite comes with firewall, antivirus, privacy cookie and popup, script blocker etc and I have to say its one of the good ones, I really don't ever get virues or maleware crap since windows is always updated and I don't install crap before a scan. I also keep my system clean with Adaware and Spybot 1.4. Also I just fixed my friends computer and I would recommend Not viewing random porn sites becuase thats where you get all the trojans and maleware crap, took me 14 hours to get everything off. He owes me big time btw lol.

Years ago, AVG. It was free.
Recently, AntiVir. Found/removed viruses AVG didn't and I liked the options.
Now, ClamWin. Haven't had enough virus issues to need an active scanner; setup to run scan periodically.
Twice I had a virus. Once because of a friend opening an e-mail attachment while checking their webmail on my PC and the other when I did the same while knowing better. :P
Sygate Personal Firewall.
Linksys WRT54Gv2 w/DDR-WRT v23 SP3
Haven't had real spyware/adware issues. Using Firefox w/NoScript extension. Scan w/SpybotS&D when I'm suspcious.

I use AVG personally. I rarely have any issues with it, but I rarely get viruses either.
I was just talking to a professional and he said he used AVG for years, but finally found his way to NOD32, and says its the best thing in the world.

Kaspersky is the best. but i warn you, only install the anti-virus features. if you install the full version, it will annoy the shit out of you and your computer.
I have recently changed, and I love this. It's one of the best, and smallest.
Check it out.

Jus started using kaspersky... not that fast, but takes up virtually no resources (4 - 30% during full system scan).
Basically does most of the scan in the background, allowing you to carry on with your work, games or watchin movies (PORN!!!!), etc... with no noticeable effect on system performance...
NICE!
:p
And I'm using the full version.... B)
will post in a week or so to give you my (by then) more experienced opinion

ZoneAlarm is good... but as you said it, too heavy. As I installed it I was not able to chat via ICQ, even connecting to internet was difficult...
I now use G Data AntiVirenKit ( = AntiVirusKit). Awesome... Although it is a German product it's in English, too. I am very pleased.
The official website http://www.gdata.de/portal/GB
edit: maybe I should describe you the program a bit :)
- easy to use
- asks what to do (if a file is infected, you can quarantine or delete it at once)
- reacts on every tiny bit (even if you install something it asks if the registry database is allowed to be changed by the program)
- every action you can do is explained (what happens if you do this or that)
- two engines in one program: Kaspersky Anti Virus Scanner & Bit Defender
- keep versions up to date with automatic virus and program updates
- if you would like to get some information about a virus you can check the Virus Dictionary in which every virus, worm, trojan etc. is listed
for more information just visit the website if you like.

oops... forgot all about this.... sorry.
still using kaspersky internet security, can't fault it... i've even had friends of mine trying to hack me, but kasperskys anti hacker just laughs at them MUAHAHAHA!!!
even tried hacking it myself, no chance. I purposely infected myself with virii, trojans, keyloggers, spyware, all in all about 300 different "threats."
when i turned kaspersky back on, it jus turned round and said:
"kaspersky internet security has detected 673 threats" - this is when i realised someone else was trying to hack me (traced it back to singapore)... i clicked on neutralize all threats, 15 seconds later, everything was peachy again... and as for the poor sap who tried to hack me? his computer seems to have fallen silent... aww... shame... :D
kaspersky for the win people... I've tried the rest so that you don't have to bother... it's kaspersky all the way for me... my system runs like it's a freshly installed operating system (fast and smooth) and i haven't reinstalled windows once while i've been using kaspersky (about 3 months now)
before kaspersky, i had loads of probs (do not use zone alarm firewall - what a piece of shite....)
i don't have any other antispy, anti spam, etc... i only use kaspersky internet security now, it handles everything for me... :D
if you agree to pay for an anti-virus software Kaspersky is the best choice with the best detection rates - nearly 99.6 % of all viruses

I have used quite a few different AV programs, and have had good experiences with Symantec Corporate Antivirus (MUCH better & leaner than the retail Norton. This one is only about 20MB), AVG, Nod32, Kaspersky, and the Trend Micro online scanner. I use Symantec Corp most often, but would feel just as confident with any of the others I mentioned as well.
What I have come to start using that's been incredible is Deep Freeze. It's meant for computer labs, libraries, etc where the computers are public and shared. Basically it will 'freeze' your computer in a state that it restores back to everytime the machine restarts. If you get a virus, spyware, or anything it will be gone once you restart your computer. They claim you don't even need to use AV software if you have Deep Freeze installed, but I play it safe and have both installed.
Using both of those keeps my computer real clean, and it always feels like I'm using a newly formatted Windows install.

I personally love using trend micro products. In fact, according to the latest issue (sept 2007) of Consumer Reports Magazine, the best antivirus software is Trend Micro Internet Security 2007. Here's the complete list from that article:
1. Trend Micro ('PC-cillin') Internet Security 2007 (now referred to as "Trend Micro Internet Security 2007") (http://www.trendmicro.com)
2. Check Point ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.0
3. McAfee Total Protection 2007
4. McAfee Internet Security Suite 2007
5. Microsoft Live OneCare
6. BitDefender Internet Security 10
7. F-Secure Internet Security 2007
8. Symantec Norton 360
9. Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007
