Marvel is bringing THOR to the big screen come July 16, 2010 with Kenneth Branagh attached to direct.

IESB did a script review on Mark Protosevich's draft awhile back in August 2007. Of course there have been I am sure several re-writes since that time, as scripts do, but the script dealt only with Thor in his native land of Asgard, his father issues with Odin and his battle with his brother turned evil-doer Loki with hopes of Asgard domination with no mention of the modern world.

We are now getting word that there has been an addition to the end of the Asgard driven Thor story that very much gives credence to further Thor stories and how Marvel plans to bring everything together for the Avengers film due out in 2011 a question even Tony Stark himself pondered, Downey Jr. said to MTV, "The danger you run with colliding all these worlds is [director] Jon [Favreau] was very certain that 'Iron Man' should be set in a very realistic world. Nothing that happened in 'Iron Man' is really outside the realm of possibility. Once you start talking about Valhalla and supersized super soldiers and jolly green giants it warrants much further discussion."

A reliable source tells the IESB that the character of Donald Blake has been added to the end of the script. Let me reiterate that he wasn't there before, the script was set entirely in the land of the Norse Gods.

The introduction of the character is essential to how Marvel will tie Thor into the Avengers that is set in contemporary Tony Stark/Hulk timeframe. It explains how the actual Thor film will be set in the ancient time of the Norse Gods and how they will subsequently bring the character into a modern time with Donald Blake discovering the magical Norse hammer Mjolnir and turning into Thor.

Now is Thor sent to live amongst the humans with no memory of his life as Thor until he finds the hammer as in the comic book? I would have to assume so but this will all happen after we see Thor in his native land battling other Norse Gods in Asgard in order for the audience to learn his backstory.

Now can they explain all this using an epilogue approach a la Samuel L. Jackson in Iron Man with the main story still focusing on the Thor character in Asgard or does the Blake character and his storyline have a bigger role?

Don't know for sure, but he's been added says our source. Take it as a rumor if you need to but it makes complete sense.

We've also been told that director Kenneth Branagh will have an acting part in the film as well - a throw back to Jon Favreau's role in Iron Man. Guess Louis Leterrier missed that boat as he didn't appear in The Incredible Hulk.

One more thing, no J. Michael Straczynski is not doing the current re-write of the script, he has confirmed this repeatedly.

Stay tuned for more THOR news from the IESB!

I cast no judgements one way or another, but Kenneth Branagh sort of comes out of left field.

I don't wanna get into a casting discussion, but I suspect that with an actor as classy as Branagh being the director, I doubt they cast some rube in the lead.

It's just that when I think Kenneth Branagh, I think of Hamlet, Henry V, and the like. It seems a little odd to me that a guy who so often does such high-brow stuff is going to direct a comic book movie. Not that comic books can't aspire to be brilliant and literary art, but that's not how I think of Thor.

He directed the Sleuth remake right? Has anyone watched that?

You never know who will direct a comicbook movie. This can go the way of Bryan Singer, Sam Rami (Great) or it can go Ang lee (he made hulk into greek tragedy and it stunk) .

I'm very happy that the movie is going to take place on Asgard. The news that Don Blake and Earth come into it at the end is very cool to me. I was nervous because I kept hearing different places how all of the Marvel Studios movies were going to be the Ultimate versions. I would be happy with that for everyone except Thor. I have high hopes for this movie.

I know this is a shot, but I would love to see Dolph Lundrens career being resurected by being in this film. Im just saying he cant play thor but he could play odin

Wow that just hyped me alot. I think he will direct a solid film if the script stays as cool as it is sounding right now.

Really looking forward to the casting news and what ever they give us at comic con(if anything?)

I'm also really looking forward to them releasing a Walt Simonson Thor in an omnibus to coincide with it. I mean, they pretty much have to, right?

I think Thor as he'll appear in The Avengers movie and when he comes to earth as/through Donald Blake will be closer to the Ultimate version then the original. But they'll probably just cherry pick the best stuff from both versions.

Vincent D'onofrio should play Thor for the 2nd time. Based on his Adventures in Babysitting portrayal he is the only one for the job. ;)

Thor foils a burglar. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/7807920.stm)

Looks like he's getting a work-out before making his big-screen debut.

I was really hoping the guy who plays Eric on True Blood would play Thor, but this works as well!

We we're talking about obscure actors lately....

I havent seen Star Trek yet so I cant judge this decision. But they did pick a random actor to play Thor. But it is probably for the better. Let it be an actor that can show his worth instead of a big name ruining the character.

Wasn't great in Star Trek. Interesting pick he is gonna have to get buff. Or maybe he plays only his human form.

I agree with Conor, Thor is probably the most Shakespearean of all comicbook characters. So having Kenneth Branagh directing it isn't such a bad idea. From what I read, it seems as though Kenneth really respects the character and will do right with Thor.

It seems like a decent fit, although I was thinking they would go with someone older. To have someone that young the movie will be more about his relationship with Odin, I would think.

Tom Hiddleston is supposedly playing Loki. I have no idea who that is, but he looks the part.

Brian Blessed Cast In Thor Movie? (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2009/06/02/brian-blessed-cast-in-thor-movie/)

I understand that British actor Brian Blessed has been cast in Kenneth Branagh’s THOR movie, based on the Marvel Comics title, as the character Odin.

Blessed is best known for his roles as Caesar Augustus in I CLAUDIUS and King Of The Hawk Men in FLASH GORDON as well as being a charity campaigner and mountaineer.

He has appeared in a number of Kenneth Branagh productions, including HAMLET and AS YOU LIKE IT, famed for his booming voice.

That seems to be the word going around. I can't believe I didn't think of it before! If Kenneth Branagh has truly cast him, then he's a casting genius. That large booming voice is perfect for Odin! I loved him in Blackadder.

This is the Marvel movie that has me worried the most. By itself, I'm sure it's possible to come up with a decent movie. But tie it into the Avengers movie? That will be harder to pull off and not be completely stupid.
