View Full Version : What's in the fridge?

With a troublesome economic forecast persistently looming on the horizon
I got to wondering what is in my friend's refrigerator, not for the simple fact
that all too often I intend to invite myself over for dinner, but also tend to
enjoy the interaction of an internet connection when trying to decide how in
the hell I am going to figure out what to eat for dinner. It's also nice to see
how the "other half" live from time to time, and I tend to be dog-like, nosy
much like Snoopy. I had also considered many places around the world wide
wilderness of the internet, and discovered, there is as yet, at the time I'm sitting
down, thinking about it, no single place where a large inventory slash cross-
section of technologically well-adjusted society has actually gathered to
share what is in, the collectiveness, of their fridge. I imagined something like a site like
Yelp! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yelp,_Inc.) being married to something like Twitter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter), incorporating a fast-popularity based
engine like Digg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digg) and perhaps bring in new sponsors...

(Like Wendy's, they've got decent burgers and Wi-Fi nationwide)

In my imagination, putting together a website slash domain where there's this
really slick GUI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphical_user_interface), somewhere between DiggLabs: Stack (http://labs.digg.com/stack/) meets a neat object
based script, where items within a virtual fridge are given popularity by the
number of people who review certain products. Something like a real-time
endorsement of all the hacker-loved goodies we see our favorite all-star
cast of internet character's enjoying, drinking, eating, etc... bringing to mind
the Jenny Craig slash NutriSystem (http://www.nutrisystem.com/jsps_hmr/home/index.jsp?_requestid=2367454) campaigns and the current drink (http://www.energyfiend.com/2008/01/braintoniq-the-birth-of-a-true-think-drink)
of the week sponsoring our favorite shows, in a simple single destination
that loads quickly, is web-based, and falls just sort of Second-Life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Life)...

In my imaginary virtual fridge, items could be moved around, so that things
at the back could be seen, and assigned priority somewhere along the lines
of a "WIRED (http://www.wired.com/)" magazine's [wired][tired][expired] (http://www.wired.com/culture/culturereviews/magazine/16-11/st_wte) piece, along with which hacker
favorites are "Top Shelf" items that everyone likes, where to get the best
deal on said item, or actually order it IMMEDIATELY. Two doors too, one being
the "chill" side and the other being where we keep our favorite ice cream...

It might also work for a certain internet television network to help advertise
the products of sponsors, short of putting up a "home-shopping-network"
style podcast which I will be forced to skip altogether.

On the outside of our virtual frige could be chatrooms, links of the week,
you basic forums (http://www.foodnetworkfans.com/forum/archive/index.php/f-26.html), bulletins (http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/bulletins/index.html), recipes (http://www.safeway.com/ifl/grocery/Recipes-and-Meals/) made into virtual fridge magnets (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&safe=active&q=refrigerator%20magnets&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi), post-it (http://www.3m.com/us/office/postit/digital/digital_notes.html)
notes, and perhaps even a report (http://www.craphound.com/images/sfphysicsreportcard.jpg) card from the "Student" or "Intern" of the
week. At any rate I figured I'd go frist, since this will inevitably become
buried with the emergence of more pressing matters or result in the more
sinister evolutions, ending in perhaps a, "What's in my Trash" and "What's
in my Laundry Hamper" threads which will be far less appetizing. Here's mine:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2254/2554434050_6281695976.jpg?v=1231131077
Perhaps this has already been done somewhere and I've jus' missed it?
At any rate, I was also inspired by a couple (http://revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16982) of other threads (http://revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103) in the forums.

Feel free to show us what's in your fridge, if anything at all... perhaps it will be merely an expose' on
how f***ing broke we all are, and should actually be a place to share pointers on finding on-line
food coupons and do some bartering of chickens and bags of fruit short of walking down a highway
and I'll admit, some may be embarrassed or ashamed to admit what's in the fridge, because at times,
even I won't want to look in there, almost to the point of the movie CHUD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.H.U.D.) or Cowboy Beebop episode (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Cowboy_Bebop_episodes) 11...

May also be a method to bring back certain shows
I miss, and fill the schedule with new content:

I don't entirely get the point of this thread, perhaps because I'm tired. But this part jumped at me. I feel fortunate we are no longer always dead-broke, despite only Cody working full-time while I work on my business, but that doesn't mean we eat filet mignon all the time. Food is damned expensive here.

What I've found helps is to buy what's on sale. When chickens go on sale buy one get one free, I grab a couple and freeze them. I'm not picky on brands of most things (peas and blueberry preserves being the two exceptions), and I pay attention to the per-unit cost. If the bigger bottle is 3/4 the cost per unit of the smaller bottle AND I know we WILL use it before it goes bad, I'll buy the bigger bottle. Sometimes, even if we're not out of, say, ketchup, but there's a damned good sale, I'll grab a bit. I rarely ever buy at whole-price (except those blueberry preserves that rarely go on sale). We also make our own bread now. $20 in ingredients makes us about 20 loaves, white, honey-wheat, even pina colada bread. Much better than $4 per loaf.

I recently rediscovered the Dollar Tree. Some good munchies in there for a buck. In addition to munchies there, there are two grocery stores I'll go to. Safeway (Vons in some areas, same store) has a much MUCH better price on ground beef ($12.49 for a 5lb log) than Nob Hill (aka Raley's or Bel Air) ($4.99 per single pound). But Nob Hill has a better price on milk ($3.49 for TWO gallons on non-fat versus $4.49 for ONE gallon).

There was a time, soon after I was laid off, where money was so tight we were rationing hot dogs and a meal would be ramen with a canned of mixed veggies thrown in. It was depressing and hard, yet I was personally better off than either time when I was homeless. I scraped together change to get something at Jack in the Box and cried when I saw they closed early. Of course it was Christmas in 2005 and I was upset at being so hungry on Christmas. But knowing I could sink lower than after being laid off, it was still hard and depressing.

I'm really angry that the economy is so bad, and I'm even angrier at companies outsourcing left and right. What's the point of cheaper labor is the people you're trying to sell your product to can't afford to buy it?! Companies are enriching other countries for pennies on the US-dollar with the real cost being people starving. Sure, you can say no one is entitled to a job, but it's something different when there's not even a chance of applying because you're a US-citizen who can't afford to save up to apply for a work visa in India, and definitely can't afford the cost of plane fare to get there to work. I've met Indians in the Bay Area who've since gone back to India because that's where the jobs are. But Americans mostly don't have the option of going to another country.

It's hard pursuing happiness when the jobs are leaving and no one thinks twice about another couple thousand people in the local area being laid off due to yet another domestic closure as the jobs are shipped off.

Don't get me wrong, because I really do love you to death AriaStar, no offense but
this is just an idea I had, partly because of your avatar, with no where else to put it
after I'd written it down. The idea for a web app? Then I looked at it, thought it was
somewhat funny, and perhaps a good idea, surfed for a while, came here to share it.
This isn't about my being really being broke or pissed off though. I'm that way constantly.
No, basically I just wanted a thread, of just the inside of refrigerators...

This last guy was obviously trying to avoid aliens hacking his laptop short of using the tin-foil.
The fridge is an awesome laptop bunker for an EMF bombing attack. Didn't you see Indiana Jones IV?

Feel free to also post LIVE! (http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/buzz/archives/000584.html) webcam (http://www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp/gardens/) or ustream links
to the inside of your refrigerator in this thread...
Basically everything refrigerator related. I've been
shopping for an additional one after watching an
old episode of The Broken, to hold just 40 ouncers.
Maybe some stupid trivia, on "Should I eat it?" question
of the week, covering how long food takes to spoil...

You might wanna avoid photographing anything that would
be gross or incriminating, y'know, try to keep it safe for work.
I would like to know what's in the Rev3 breakroom refrigerator.
Not to mention, if someone is actually messing with my food,
sneaking in and drinking my milk when I am not looking or the
dog has somehow figured out how to get into my fridge, I should
probably figure out a way to catching said person. I mean, there
are dozens of people who sit and watch webcams of empty rooms,
why not the inside of a fridge. I would think it would be equally as
interesting, at least, to me. I like food. Maybe this is just weird.

I love looking in other peoples fridge.

It was my favorite part of Rachael Rays magazine. I also love looking in other peoples carts at the grocery store and judging them on what they are buying.

Right now, I have NOTHING in my fridge. Some water... a veggie tray...some leftovers. And a ton of condiments. This is mostly due to the fact that I have 13 dollars to my name and no job.

Oh...I made myself sad again.

No. I'm talking open source, with an awesome tutorial.
A place to get in the "i hate windows" diggs as much
as is humanly possible. Think free delicious library meet
everyone's refrigerator dot com. And it's free. You can
surf the worldwide fridges anonymously or signup/login for
extras exclusive only to members. Still only an idea at this
point. Figured in the meantime, we might get a sneak peak (http://www.slipperybrick.com/tag/refrigerator/)
of some of yours, refrigerators (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2007/01/treehouse_fridge.jpg&imgrefurl=http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/gadgets/tree-house-refrigerator-design-for-the-certifiably-insane-226080.php&usg=__98spl4nqkeO_bWkGzYY0BxSeOU0=&h=700&w=599&sz=66&hl=en&start=6&um=1&tbnid=yErMDAz8lmmf0M:&tbnh=140&tbnw=120&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dwhite%2Bhouse%2Brefrigerator%26um%3D1 %26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN):

...I just think having a "what's in the fridge" thread is funny and entertaining...
Of all the gaming experiences out there it has been one of those things that
kinda gets overlooked if you ask me. Of course, as a kid, I was also fascinated
by the Playschool kitchen (http://images.landofnod.com/is/image/LandOfNod/1103061_FoldingToyKitchen_06H?$zm$). Think that, but for adults, with hacker foods sponsors.

OMG. Discovery channel here I come: I gotta' ask this, but seriously, do you guys think thanksgiving gravy could be eaten at this point? It's still in there. In the back of the fridge, chillin.

3 week old leftover mom-made soup that tasted like old sweat socks and bong water. I told her it was wonderful. I better flush that before she digs it out of the back of the fridge next visit. (when she will bring more soup)

Reminds me, I'm gonna eat the rest of the seafood gumbo and avoid
the gravy. It's amazing how good anything gets with enough tabasco.

My daughter demanded that I buy this over a year ago. It is going to stay in here until a.)she cleans the refrigerator, or b.) her rehearsal dinner. She's only 16 but I am still betting on b.

Well, waste not, want not. Besides, cheese never goes bad. Does it?
My parents made me eat Oreo cookies, and only Oreo cookies after
I kept getting into the cookie jar before dinner. Amazing how much I
can't stand them anymore. Now I only like Toll House. I can't even
eat Oreo as a topping...
