Alright!!! I can't wait for this week! there's so many books im looking forward to! Green Lantern, Captain America, JSA....
oh wait, that was last week.....
i know it's a crappy week when Invincible Iron Man is my most anticipated book of the week :(
(not to say it a bad book, im just upset it's my most anticipated book)
I've read all my Marvel books so far.
the War of Kings one shot was amazing, I am SO excited for it. Really if pushed I could probably happily drop all of Marvel and DC aside from the cosmic stuff.
Cable was still solid, I continue to like it a lot and things are starting to fall together more and more.
I'm super interested to see where Iron Man goes after this issue, obviously Tony isn't going to be totally mindwiped, wouldn't leave much of a story at that point.
Punisher was satisfying, I'm going to keep reading it at least through this arc.
X-Men Noir was about as good as the last issue, like it, not loving it.
The Dazzler story in Manifest Destiny was really good, the main story wrapped up kind of unsatisfyingly.

So what do I need to be familiar with to read "War of Kings"? I just read the first volume of "Annihilation" and found it so much fun I am tempted to check out WoK. But I don't want to get ahead of myself or jump into something totally over my head. Should I wait until I've gotten through more of the Annihilation stuff, or is this a place to jump in?
The main thrust of War of Kings is Kree vs Shi'Ar.
I'd say as long as you take it as a given that Vulcan is emperor of the Shi'Ar the rest of things seem to be pretty well explained in the one shot.
There's going to be a War of Kings mini, so you can probably read that as a mostly self-contained story.

Small week for me:
Detective Comics #852: (Pick of the Week) I dont know how Dini did it....but Hush is now one of my favorite villains. It took him only six issues to make him one of the best Bat-villains and I adore Dini for that feat. This issue just showed up smug Hush is and how being the evil twin of Batman can really screw Wayne's life...If Bruce is even alive at this point.
Hellboy The Wild Hunt #2: Great art and a great origin story what was once just a minor character for 'The Corpse'. Mignola is just great at adding depth and characterization to even the smallest of characters. It's never a good sign when a naked woman covered in blood comes out of a coffin.
Punisher #1: It is a better title then War Journal, mainly because the art is miles better then what War Journal had for artists. Even still the issue was 'blah' in terms of story and the art was medicore once you look at it in detail. Punisher is a so-so character when he has to deal with superheroes and villains. I hope Remender can make this version of the Punisher work. Oh and when did the Sentry come back from his bitchy, crying fit? And when did he decide to work for Osborn?

Lame week for me. I am just getting me some Grundy ( Faces Of Evil Grundy #1). Need to make it my LCS though, stoopid doctor appointment got in the way.

I won't get my books until Friday, but it's a small week for me, too. Just 5 books I believe. But I did want to say that while the reviews for the POW are always entertaining, Josh's review this time out was really good. I don't read the book, but it is the kind of review that makes me want to start. Great job!

Did you get the War of Kings Saga with your books? It was one of the free Marvel doo dads, and it pretty much gives you the back story for War of the Kings.
By the way, the one shot was fantastic, and I'm tempted to get everything tying into it. It's going to be epic, cosmic goodness.
I thought Detective this week was just ok, but that last panel was pretty awesome. I'm glad that Hush is getting his just desserts.

So far;
Cable #10 - I've been really enjoying the past few issues, but this issue really bumped it up a notch! The fights (in both future and present), the ending I didn't see coming, it's all great! Plus Olivetti's art looks gorgeous as usual.
Gravel #7 - End of Book 1?! You mean I have to wait after this killer issue?! Very fun issue! Gravel seems to be the man with a plan, and a good plan at that.
Hellboy: The Wild Hunt #2 - Hey! I remember that goblin dude! A little continuity, in my Hellboy? It's more likely than you think. The bit with the giants was awesome! Plus the art has been top-notch.
Hexed #1 - I like it. It's something different, and I'm planning to go along for the rest of the ride (next three issues). Plus I was really drawn-in by all the pretty colors.
Invincible Iron Man #9 - It seems Stark is slowly becoming less and less human, and more machine with every issue. I'm not so sure I like it. Plus this issue was kinda 'meh' to me.
Punisher #1 - A Punisher book by Remender? Sign me up! The Punisher vs the Sentry reminded me of a Batman vs Superman type scenario. With that being said, I loved it! A lot of good Punisher has been surfacing these past few months, and I'm loving every different (and new) title! Especially when the Punisher is going after that very high-ranking target.
Rest #2 - I'm really digging the idea of a world without sleep. Just thinking about all the accomplishments that I personally could get done makes me want to sign-up for this sleepless program too! I could use all that extra time to read every comic book ever made.
The Boys #26 - I'm glad this current story-arc is almost over and done with, because I'm kinda tired of Hughie's current mission.
That's all for now, I'll write some more reviews tomorrow.

Well, my favorite issue was Secret Six, even though the ending was a bit anti-climactic and stupid. I really enjoyed detective, *spoiler* the sequence where Hush kills the widow was my favorite Hush moment ever.
I liked X men Noir fine, just fine.

You know I never thought of that when reading Punisher #1.
Punisher is Marvel's equal of Batman and The Sentry is a huge rip-off of Superman....So it was in essence a Batman vs Superman battle.
Even still, it was a weak issue in my eyes.

Punisher is Marvel's equal of Batman
Nah. Black Panther/T'Challa is. Busiek/Johns/Priest went out of their ways to make it so...

Detective Comics #852 - I'm tired of Hush, Hush, Hush (Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!)! I think it's too soon to return to him for another story, even if it's going to last only two issues. Nothing to see here, move along.
Faces Of Evil: Solomon Grundy - Wait, so Grundy is Bruce Banner now?? I had high hopes since Johns was writing it, but this issue just didn't do it for me. Sure Kollins' art was nice, but nothing about this issue really stood out to me and blew my mind.
Secret Six #5 - Okay, seriously, this is the third Faces Of Evil book I've read this week, and the common trait all three have is this; nothing exciting. What was exciting about this issue though was the bits with Bane, and the fights in the hotel. Plus the reveal at the end was pretty cool as well. So despite the Faces Of Evil tie-in, this book was fun.
Sandman: The Dream Hunters #3 - So far, this is my top pick this week. The story is okay this issue, but what really did it for me was Russell's art; it's sooo goddamn amazing and gorgeous!!! I spent a few minute each page just absorbing every little detail. Somebody pinch me!
Wolverine: Switchback - I pick-up and read these Wolverine one-shots because I have a good read most of the time, despite the $3.99 price tag. This issue was very enjoyable, and the second story with Juan Doe's art was an extra treat!
Cthulu Tales #10 - It was okay. 'Meh', if anything.
Black Lightning: Year 1 #1 - KILL IT WITH FIRE!!! When were the fans demanding a Black Lightning Year 1 story? Oh, that's right; they weren't.
Marvel Zombies 3 #4 - There's a fourth volume on the horizon??? I would have hoped that Marvel saw the light, and realized they've milked this series for all it's worth. The Zombie udder is dry, Marvel. Let it rest in peace. It stopped being good when Kirkman left.
I still have a few more titles to read, so I'll report on those at the end of the day most likely.

Id say it stopped being good after the first mini, after Kirkman decided he was done with 'big two' work.

Gonna totally disagree with you on Detective. If anything, Paul Dini has made Hush a more respectible villain and I have loved every second Dini writes Hush. Now of course we should lay Hush low for now until Battle for the Cowl after this two parter....But I thought this Hush issue was just a fantastic read.
Gotta disagree with the MZ3 comment as well. Yes a third installment wasnt needed....but when I read this from first issue to the last; I was entertained threw out. I felt there was more love for this title by Van Lente then with the previous two by Kirkman. If Van Lente is doing the 4th installment I think everyone should give it a try. Cause you'll be entertained by it in one form or another.

A third of the way through 2 weeks worth of books (so, about 35 comics) and I don't even know what's from when, but overall WAR OF KINGS is the best I've read so far. Abnett and Lanning are doing just as good a job with the Marvel cosmic stuff as Johns and crew are doing with the GLs on the other side. I'm not going to hop onto any of the new Character mini's, but I'll be buying the main six parter for this methinks...

After seeing the team at the very last page, I have no clue who these Z-list Marvel heroes are, and frankly my dear I just don't give a damn!

After seeing the team at the very last page, I have no clue who these Z-list Marvel heroes are, and frankly my dear I just don't give a damn!
But wasnt that the problem with the third installment? I admit I had no idea who Machine Man was or Joctusa was....I knew of Morbuis cause of the Spider-Man 90's cartoon; but I had no idea who their main stars were. I love it that Marvel is taking their horror characters and actually using them in a cool way. So we have a vampire, a werewolf, a Man-Thing, a wizard (or sorceress in this case), and a demon to fight a horde of zombies.
The complaints are valid that a forth installment is maybe a bit too much. But with an original premise of Midnight Sons vs Zombies in a comic book...I gotta give it a shot.
Hell I dont even know when the Midnight Sons were ever used but I just love the concept of the team.

When/why did Punisher War Zone go from a weekly mini series to bi-weekly?
gabeja
01-09-2009, 12:19 AM
I don't think that it ever was intended to be anything other than a bi weekly, either way, I'm thrilled at how often an ennis book is coming out now.
As long as people buy the Marvel Zombies books, they will continue to make them, even with a weak premise. I didn't read volume 3, but after the mediocrity of volume 2, the series was dead...er, undead to me.
When/why did Punisher War Zone go from a weekly mini series to bi-weekly?
Marvel dropped the ball I guess? It was definitely supposed to be weekly for all 6 issues.
Maybe they'll release both issues next week.

Just read....
AMS - Issue was okay. Fills in some questions from previous issues.
Walking Dead - I am not sure if I liked it...well I liked it...but not sure if Kirkman could have done something else to show us all that Rick is willing to do anything to protect Carl. I am not going to lie, this issue game me shivers and I wanted to just flip to the end to make sure it wasn't going to happen. Really not sure about it though....was it just for shock value??

Death of a redhead.
That was a surprise? HOW long have you been reading X-Men comics? ;)
Seriously, I was surprised she didn't die two issues ago, and I commend the writer for deciding to give her a personality before killing her. But. . .kind of a foregone conclusion, wasn't it? I found the pacing of the whole issue to be weird.
Death of a redhead.
HAhahaahhahh
Sounds like a fantastic B movie.

Mild spoilers.
I did a quick review of the Sword, but I also thought I'd bring it up here. For me, the book is suffering because its become a contrived series of tropes as to how Dara can drop, lose or otherwise be deprived of the Sword. The art is still great and I like the characters alright, though they are some emo-ass folks. (I mean, who sobs and cries like a little girl with a dead kitty after they hurt someone who was trying to murder them? That's a terribly hyperbolic reaction.) The Luna's appear to have handed their protagonist too much of a beat stick. The bad guys don't stand a chance. Its been well established, in fact. WHat do you guys think?

I'm in a bit of agreement here. It has been getting annoying that Dara doesn't seem to be developing any sort of skills to keep from being shot to hell or in keeping the sword in her hand.
That said, I thought the end of the last issue was pretty interesting with the bad guys turning on each other. We'll see.
