Maybe they killed your father...

I think he's referring to how the way the points appear it looks like you should be able to do something with them, like spend them on xbox content. I don't hate them, but I get it, its a little annoying to a new xbox user.

i love em, keeps me playing 360 alot. the trophies on PS3 are alright ive slowly started to digg them as well.

But i like the idea of having a way to spend them as well. But i dont want my score to reset either.

I like my rival with friends.

for the most part i love them, gives you more things to do while playing.

I dont think thats a full on con, if you have friends you two can brag about having an achievement the other does not have. or just over all lead in your Gamerscore.

But then again this does fall into the whole "let us buy stuff" area of gamerscore and achievement points.

They're amazing. They're not superficial at all. I think that people who don't like it just don't 'get' it.

It's like playing a classic arcade game with a high score. Surely everybody can understand why this is fun? Indirect competition with your friends via high score.

Achievements take the concept of a high score and take it to the next level. I like to see it as a cross game high score. Your friend might have kicked your butt in geometry wars, but you have completed all the mini-quests of fallout. There are inconsistencies and flaws, See: Avatar. But games like these are the exceptions to the rules. Hopefully designers will learn the Art of balanced achievements.

I like achievments, a lot.

I'm not crazy about em, where I need to have as much as possible and need 100% achievments in all the games.

But, they do prolong the amount of time I spend with most of my games.

and I almost miss them on the couple of PS3 games I have.

It's just something that adds a little extra motivation to play more of the game and get games for the 360.

I still need the multiplayer achievement on that dino dash thing...I'm not sure it's possible for me to get 100% on anything on the 360, since there's always at least one multiplayer in every game I have...or seems to be. It's like game companies make fun of you if you don't have any friends ;>

I enjoy them but feel inept because of my gamerscore.

It's a vicious cycle.

Or don't like having 12 year olds screaming racial slurs into your ear :p

Thanks, I thought it was annoying however when I hit 40001. Stupid Mortal Kombat and Puzzle Fighter and their weird gamerscore amounts.

I like em. They usually add to the gameplay experience quite a bit... except in the case of GTA4, where achievements replaced actual in-game awards (such as special cars at your safehouse, etc).

I hate the super easy ones though... like in Prince of Persia, where you get about 5 achievements within the first minute of gameplay. Stupid.

Yea I tend to love them, but agree about the easy ones like avatar.

I just played forced unleashed and those were really easy. When used correctly like in left 4 dead it adds so much more to the game. (killing 53,436 zombies is going to be really hard)

I'm in the same boat. I wish I would have never played MK3, my score ending in 1 or 6 really annoys me.

I used to enjoy them, but I've slowly cared less about them. I'd much rather just play a game through, enjoy it and if it's well worth it play again. I liked games like BioShock & Tomb Raider: Legend where I could play on any setting and get an achievement. However, there were more to be unlocked for playing on harder modes. I started Halo 3 on Easy, because I'm not great at the series. Got through a few levels when I realized I'd gotten none because I wasn't on Normal at least. Then beating more of the game and not receiving any for some reason was less appealing.

I think the best achievement system I've seen is in WoW. It tells you the achievement, but also your progress in getting it. I believe you also get some bonuses for some. I'd like to see more games where you unlock an achievement/trophy and you get a new outfit, gamerpic, etc. some kind of award.

I love them, if they didnt exist I would definitely have more of a chance to just beat a game and then never play it again. With gamerpoints I am encouraged to explore all the game has to offer, and at the same time increase my e-peen.

The thing that sucks about the Mortal Kombat score is that I suck at the game so I know I will never be able to get enough achievements on it to even it out.

01-13-2009, 08:34 AM
I both love and hate the achievements where you can get them on the first run through. I love them because you get a bunch of points the first run through, but then I end up focusing on the achievements too much and break myself away from the game and start following a guide to maximize the achievement profit. I hate it when I see that an achievement requires me to collect items yet I already lost my chance at one of those items.

My sister is good enough to get them, so I am considering paying her to get them under my gamertag so that my score will return to an even number. But even though it is only like 29 points, I feel like my score would be forever tainted.

I'm not sure I understand the problem with the non-5 gamerscores...is it just that it's so uncommon? Personally, if everything is a 5/10/variant then they may as well just move the decimal one to the left and give everything in halves and the like.

something else that bugs me about them are when they pop up in the middle of a cut scene to tell you you've beat that level. I just wanna enjoy the cut scene with hearing the beep and see the achievement pop up on the bottom. The Force Unleashed was horrible for this!

Yeah i agree, but you reminded me of that little noise - i love that noise. It should play for real life achievements too.
