I hate to admit it.. but it's a huge step forward for MS. It's as snappy and usable as XP and it's already light years ahead of Vista in terms of usability, stability and user experience. I'm not ready to abandon my Macbook Pro as my main machine, but I'm willing to let go of my XP/Vista machines in favor of Windows 7.
Of course, I hate the name.. am I going to abbreviate it Win7? or 7? or W7?

I started running it on a few of my computers at work and am currently sold on it.
The download uses activex, had to boot up my xp machine to get the download page to work.

I just got a new laptop for christmas and it's my first machine in 5 years. I donno if I wanna abandon vista on my primary machine just yet and unfortunately my old desktop doesn't have the specs to support windows 7. Any thoughts on what I should do?

What are your specs? I'm running it on a box that doesn't have that great of ones.

i know i know!
really, i've been wanting to put windows on my imac (2.6, 200GB HDD, 2G Mem.) for a while...just to do it. And I figured the betta would be a good opportunity. Alas, I settled for XP and it only makes me love mac even more!

I'm was going to try it out just to try gaming on it, but wasn't sure if it was worth it. Has anyone tried gaming on it yet in either DX9 or DX10? Does it ship with DX11? Anyone try it with a DX11 compliant GPU?

I haven't done any, but from what I hear, gaming on it is pretty solid.

I've got it on a lappy at work thats 2.0 GHz 1.9G Mem (thank you shared video) and like a 40 gig hard drive and it runs unbelievably smooth.

I've installed it in a virtual machine at work and on a spare HDD at home. Unfortunately my graphics card doesn't have any working drivers for Windows 7 (or Vista), so I'm out of luck in regards to many of the snappy UI enhancements. Still other than that, it's looking quite nice (once you switch on small icons for the taskbar).

i have it running virtualized on my unibody macbook pro - using virtualbox.
i only have 1GB assigned to it, and it's actually running pretty nicely.
i've only played with a little bit with it - internet and such.
only problem with virtualization is that i'm not running native drivers, i'm running these guest additions.
how is it for gaming? stable enough? i'm thinking of setting it up with boot camp to run the native drivers and really see how it works. if i can have PC gaming running on the MBP, i'll be pretty psyched!

I have it running on a 1.2 Ghz 512 ram laptop and it is still completely smooth. (no aero running of course)

I just installed W7 and it blue screened on me twice while I was installed AVG.
Yikes. I've never had a single problem with vista.
I hope that I don't have loads of W7 problems and no one else on earth does.
Cause that would be annoying.
Vista is a Quad core DX10 box with 4GB of ram and I install W7 on a 3.2ghz P4
with 2GB of ram. Guess which is considerably faster and snappier?

Well yes, window 7 was snappier, it would be lame question to ask otherwise. :P
The BSOD's have put me off putting the OS to some more "important" use on my main machine. Even after I reinstall it'll give me the feeling of constant impending blue screen. Vista never did that to me, I screwed up the beta of that by moving the document folder to an external disc.. the explorer windows went blank... but it never went blue and quit on me. Since the proper one came out there's not been any problem, it gets a little sluggish if you leave it running for a month, but that's not that bad, at least it does run for a month.

If you have a good solid Vista install I would not wipe it for Win7. It has some nice UI features but it's very much still in beta. If you have a spare machine, can run it on a VM, or you have an open partition, I say give it a go. If you have to risk your primary system to play with it, don't.

My vista x64 has been a little flaky lately, crash 5 min after boot, so I will give this a try. Hopefully it can handle some games, been trying to beat FO3, but damn crashes keep stopping me from progressing.

In Windows 7 I need Logitic drivers for my cordless mouse, but in Vista/XP/Linux I do not need them, and Windows 7 disabled my other USB wired mouse randomly once in device manager. It also locks my computer if I get it to scan my network for routers, etc. Winrar causes a giant gap in right click within Libraries.
Other than that, it's faster than Vista. Still slower than XP but I recommend upgrading from Vista to the Beta, or at least dual-boot.

I've not really had any big problems with it to be honest.
I'm finding it really good so far. Im using the x64 edition.
First problem I had was because I had both IDE and SATA drives in when i fresh installed Windows. For some reason it installed the Bootmgr onto the IDE drive.... all i had to do to fix this was unplug the IDE whilst i repaired the SATA drive and it was fixed. - apparently this happened to people in Vista too. So it didn't really bother me much as it only took about 10 mins to fix.
Second problem I had was some compatibility problem, but that's only because the program didn't support Windows 7, I tried running it in compatibility for Vista but it didnt want to work.
Other than that though, it's been great.

So I installed windows 7 on my Dell dimension 4600 and it does not want to run any higher than 16 bit 640x480 and I can't stand looking at it. I refuse to use a computer that looks like a sped student. Has anyone found any quick fixes for and issue similar to this?

did you install proper video drivers? My laptop was running at 32bit 800x600 until I installed the video card's vista drivers and now it displays at the recommended 1280x800
