CANT WAIT

Not excited in the slightest, I just don't get why people are so into it.

I might not be the hardcore Street Fighter fan, but I do love me some Street Fighter. Tie that love with the amazing art style, and you got one excited guy. The more gameplay I see of it, the more pumped up I get.

Watching the 1Up guys playing now. Here's the link. http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3172234 Guess it's their U stream as well.

I bought Alpha 3 for PSP. Kind of enjoyed the additions, but it's hard to play on that system. I think I may get 4 when it drops in price. I'd probably need some joysticks. Definitely will be a PS3 buy though, I have trouble playing fighting games with the 360 controllers.

My earliest memories were playing SF 2 before it was on consoles. Then I had a lot of fun playing on the SNES. My problem is they've added a lot of different mechanics to the fighting that it was hard to get back into.

My favorite games were the Capcom/Marvel games. Fun fighting. My favorite characters. Some awesome stages. Marvel Vs. Capcom definitely was my favorite incarnations of the games.

street fighter IV has been made to have players get back into it without losing thier minds like SF3 required them to do

Question for people then: PS3 or 360? And maybe link up a joystick you have or getting. Looking to maybe getting one myself.

I'm looking forward to SF4. Not a crazy fighter guy. Dug the first two Soul Calibur games but loved SF2 on the SNES. So this will be worth picking up.

Might purchase an arcade stick for it, something I've never done.

We would play SFII and its many iterations endlessly. My enthusiasm began to wane around the alphas and III, but I still enjoyed the games. I'll definitely get around to picking this one up, but unless a couple of my closest friends grab it I'm going to hold off for a bit. I'm not hardcore enough to enjoy playing random matches online, and I don't find playing against the computer nearly as much fun as competing against friends.

I'm looking at that stick as well. Though haven't decided on which system. I have some more friends who use PS3. But I have a few who use 360 as well. I bought Soul Calibur 4, but it's not that fun without someone to play against.

I don't plan on playing with stick (if anything because of cost), so I'm looking at PS3 for the D-Pad.

I have a stick already from previous PS3 fighting games, but I might pick another one up for friends when they're over to make sure that the playing field is level.

I have an old PSone mini stick that works on my PS3 with a PSone->USB adapter, and I used it when I rented SoulCalibur IV. (almost any standard USB joystick/gamepad works on PS3).

But I'm not likely getting SF4. I may rent it, but I find fighting games, mostly, die off far too quickly for me to consider spending that much on one. I never see anyone playing SSF2THDR on my friends list anymore, though they were the week it came out. Same for SC4 and MK vs DC. Personally, I think I've just outgrown (is that the right word?) the genre.

i can see how people lose interest in fighting games, theyre like left for dead they are made to be played with people and when you dont have anyone to play with its pretty tedious.

but i have friends who will constantly play the games with me so w00

Really SF4 makes me want to buy a machine more then anything. That and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 machine. That's how I prefer to play the games.

See, this is where I am on the fanboy side of the fence, to a point.

See, I love this series. Mostly, up to Turbo. Super Turbo? With new characters, was good enough but, started the trend I fell from. The Combo system. MK had the same fall for me. That becomes less of fighting style skill and more of a rhythm game. I want one or the other.

The Alpha games, as well as the Capcom crossover games I liked very much. Seemed to be a pretty good balance. SFIII, not so much.

I look forward to SFIV very much. I have read that the combo system is balanced or dumbed down to a point it won't matter. That with the art style? I am in for a shot at awesome.

I hope most of us are happy.

I'm not very excited for SF IV anymore. Last time I checked up on it it seemed too slow for a SF game, and this coming from someone who thought 3rd Strike was crazy awesome...

If I lived in Stockholm (or any other place in Sweden with an active community) I'd probably still play 3S (and VF) actively and seeing as how I'm less interested in SF4 I definitely won't be playing it competitively or casually.

I've definitely not "outgrown" the genre; I think a good fighting game is about as awesome as can be, especially for competitive play. What keeps me from playing them right now is the fact that it's just really hard to play fighting games competitively in Sweden unless you live close to a good, active community.

You need that offline latency to play the game like it's meant to be played (most games are to varying extent about relying on single frames to get that move through someone's defence, etc.) and only playing the online game will probably get you into some bad habits (moves that won't go through offline will go through online). Not being able to regularly practise offline just isn't an option if you want to compete.

If I had any confidence in online play I'd probably play VF5, or the latest SC, before I considered playing SF4, even though I don't care much for SC.

Edit:
For anyone who's in to fighting games in general and possibly the competitive side of things I recommend http://www.sirlin.net/. Sirlin's written articles on lots of things; not exclusively fighting games or competition, but those are articles I think he's reached a whole other level with. I've learnt more about myself and my competitive spirit from Sirlin and "The Art of War" than anyone else could ever have hoped to teach me.

Still going to try out SF4 hopefully I'll get it from Gamefly. I think I'm going to get it for PS3 since I have Soul Calibur 4 on PS3 already. I figure why get 4 joystick controllers for 2 systems. My thing is I don't know how online multiplayer will be.

Same here. I played a bunch of SF 2 in the arcades before finally getting a version for the SNES. (Sidenote: the original PC version of the game....not so good.) By that time, the series was up to Super SF2. I think the version that you played most really sets your comfort level with the franchise.

Even though I played the Marvel Super Heroes / X-Men / vs. games extensively in the arcades, I never felt fully at ease with the 'Alpha' bar at the bottom of the screen....and all the levels of gameplay that came with it. (I put maybe $1 into the entire 'SF Alpha' series in the arcades....just never had that comfort level.)

That return in feel to SF 2 is something I'm really looking forward to in SF 4. I've also heard that there's a real tutorial as to how you pull off the 'ex' moves for all the characters....and not just a practice mode. I need that!

I don't mind the "bar at the bottom" idea. You use your skill to build it then perform one combination to make the attack happen.

It is the string of 5-17 button presses to make a combo that ruins the game flow.

SF4 seems to have solved that and I am eager to hook up with it.

(side note for me: I have received the Red Rings of Death. So my SF4 experience will have to wait.) Please, cry for me.

So, finally unlocked all the characters and am working my way through the various challange modes atm.

Love the game. It's got just the right mix of SF2 oldschoolness with SF3 depth(still mad there's no SF3 characters in the cast though). It is the string of 5-17 button presses to make a combo that ruins the game flow.

SF4 seems to have solved that and I am eager to hook up with it. That's not even remotely the case:

I definitely feel like I've played you last night Rob. My gamertag is JoeDubbs.

I'm still pretty hooked. Unlocking all the characters have been a pain. I have Gen, Akuma and Gouken left. But I mainly play ranked matches on Xbox Live. I have like a 48% win ratio which to me is pretty good since this is the first fighting game I've owned probably since the SNES. I play a pretty good Sagat.

I really want to play and see what the game is all about. Really have a hard time justifying laying down the money for it without a good controller. So still just waiting for a price drop and a controller.

03-03-2009, 05:55 AM
I'm really liking the game, but I couldn't afford the new controller, so I have to make do with the regular 360 pad. I first played the game using my friend's SE stick, and I can tell you, it is sooo much harder to do ANYTHING on the 360 pad :(

joedubbs

Yeah I wouldn't recommend buying the game unless you have a stick. I bought the Hori EX 2 for $60. A good stick.

Dan mentioned in ep102 that lag had only effected two of his fights. Is this typical for most people? I rarely have a game that's lag free, and have all but quit playing online.

It should be noted, for anyone not familiar with a stick, you'll be spending a lot of time getting used to the stick. I don't know how lenient SF4 is on input accuracy in relation to previous SF games, but regardless you're going to have a lot of mis-inputs. Not to worry, though; a lot (or most) people find sticks superior to pads once they get used to them.

Personally I feel a stick is more natural in terms of how fighting games are designed and that execution most of the time is faster and more accurate once you get used to it. There are quite a few pad players, though, so give playing with a pad (that's not the crappy 360 one) a thought.
