If you have any interest in this movie, and you have the opportunity to see it in 3D, I'd strongly advise that you see it this weekend with a pretty full audience.
They showed this at Butt-Numb-A-Thon this year and it was definitely one of the highlights. I think all of us expected it to be crap, but it went over like gangbusters. I kept turning to the dude next to me laughing, gasping, going "OOOHHHHHH!", etc, and he was smiling the entire time. At the end of the film he went up on stage and I realized that it was the director of the film that I'd been sitting next to, and he was smiling because he was so giddy that the crowd reacted so well. He told us it was the first time an audience had seen it (he'd only finished editing it days before).
It's not the type of film you go see for the acting, plot, etc. It's definitely for the absurdity of the kills and the 3D gimmicks. The 3D is *GREAT*, the kills are over the top and present in spades. This isn't an award winner type film, but I can't remember the last time I had so much damn fun at the theater.

Dan's tweet about it last night was hilarious.
"I'm about to discover the third dimension is terror at my bloody valentine"
I would have never expected myself to gain interest in this, but maybe I'll give it a look see.

I convinced my friend in LA on a trip to go last night for their 10 PM showing at The Grove. I wonder if it was the same viewing Dan attended.
I was happy to hear that my friend loved it, as did the crowd.
I'm curious to see what has changed with 3D within the last 2 years. I went to see Superman Returns and Harry Potter in 3D at the Imax, and Beowulf non-Imax and they were all a little headache inducing. This lower budget horror film worked much better in 3D than anything else I've seen.

Ok im so surprised at how many people i know are going to see this. if it does good i will go see it.
if dan liked it...then we will see...
Saw it in 2d cuz my local theatre is dumb. Was still a fun lil horror flick. Better than others I have seen...I could tell what parts would have been in 3d so I tried to just imagine it haha.

I have to go see the movie again, went opening night and it was packed so i had a seat in the front (stadium seating so it wasn't terrible) and on the far left so the 3D was off because you really had to sit in the center for it to work.

I was second from top row in the middle and it worked Very well.
Its been a long time since i seen a "3-D" movie and this was done very well IMO.
Also i wear glasses and the ones they give you actually fit over my own. so that was awesome.
My head didnt hurt much either after the film but i did get dizzy here and there.
The movie is fun...I dunno how alright it would be without the 3-d gimmick but overall it was a fun adventure with friends.

I think if you are really into slasher movies this could still be pretty enjoyable without the 3D, but it isn't anything I ever plan on watching if it isn't in 3D.
I saw it made almost the same as Notorious this weekend, but was in almost 900 more theaters. I'd be interested to see the breakdown between 3D and non 3D screens.

But when you factor in shootings and stabbings Notorious has a clear lead.

Do NOT go and see this movie, especially don't waste any extra money if the 3D version is more expensive at your cinema. This a very very average movie, the 3D is rarely used and when it is it's to poor effect. The deaths are yawnsome, the movie lacks any kind of tension and is chock full of horror movie cliches, but they're not even played for laughs. The ONLY saving grace, is that you never know who the killer is until the end and they do a good job of keeping you guessing. The acting is also atrocious!
Don't give the studio your money because all they'll do is make more of this sh*t, stick 3D on the end and continue to milk you forever and a day!

In the immortal words of the Dude, "That's just, like, your opinion, man." :)
I understand the fact that you didn't like it. These movies aren't for everyone, that's for sure. I certainly don't intend to convince you otherwise. It's definitely not one of those movies where you can go "Think about it like this" and suddenly you are viewing it in a different light.
What I don't get is the "not played for laughs" bit. I don't understand how you can watch the naked bit followed by the midget bit and not see it isn't played for laughs. Maybe some of my certainty stems from the fact that I could see the pleasure on the face of the director as he sat next to me while the entire audience laughed fairly frequently during the viewing.
I also don't get the "3d is hardly used" bit, since the entire movie is in 3D and there is a noticeable depth in just about every scene.

There was nothing funny in that scene for me at all and the midget was the worst actress in the world ever. On paper it might read like it's going to be funny, "hey let's have a midget get murdered while a completely naked woman watches, then gets murdered too", but it was groansome. And having her running around outside naked was just stupid.
As for the 3D, of course there was depth in every scene, but I expect a bit more than that when I go and see a 3D movie (especially when I pay more for the priveledge). I expect inventive filmmaking that takes advantage of the 3D. In this movie the depth of vision was rarely used in a interesting and inventive fashion. If it's over done it can become gimmicky, but here it just felt tacked on. The pinnacle of 3D in this generation so far has been Beowulf, which I couldn't possibly imagine seeing in 2D. Watching this movie in 2D would make very little difference.

I saw Beowulf in 3D and wasn't particularly impressed with the 3D there. It was occasionally headache inducing. However, I love that movie and I've watched it several times since I bought it. The story, animation and voice acting were all top notch. I love the way it takes the classic and interprets it as a story that has been passed down orally, and envisions what the real story would have been had that been true.
This movie has none of those things. As all of us that have seen the movie have said, this movie has an unimaginative script and unimpressive acting. The only thing it has going for it is the identity of the killer, the kills and the 3D. There are body parts and pick axes flying into the screen the same way they did back in the heyday of 3D slasher flicks, only this time there is more of the 3D and it works much better than in the past. I'd say that although the kills were numerous, they lose a little bit of their luster when viewed flat on the small screen. I will probably never watch this movie again once it leaves the theater.
Of course all that I've said pretty much is right in line with the gist of your original statement, "Don't see this movie, it's not any good." and the follow up "Beowulf is a better movie." :p
Now I'm off to see an advance screening of Coraline in 3D. If the 20 minutes we saw at BNAT are any indication this will be a great experience.

You know, my biggest disappointment with the movie was the kills. Apart from the early kill with the eye coming out of the screen on the end of the pick axe, the kills showed a distinct lack of imagination.
Hope Coraline is as good as it looks.

I liked it wes, i know its nothing great but it was fun and its better than alot of other low card(ha wrestling term) horror films.
I really think the 3-d was cool. It got dizzy at times for me because everything was 3D, like the truck would pop out a bit when the camera went around it....i dunno it was odd but then we got cool bullet(s) and the pick axe deal...
Boobies.
End of story for me. :)

I'm guessing you had to pay extra, hence the ranting about the 3d being unimpressive?

It is more annoying when you pay extra, but I'd have been disappointed even if I hadn't. I can see someone being impressed if it was their first 3D movie of this generation, but I don't think it holds a candle to the 3D in Beowulf or even Journey to the Centre of the Earth (which was a terrible movie).
Wes
I think the credits to the movie is awesome and the end credits (in 3D). But the killings didn't feel that cool, as Dan said I like the depth of feel 3D has.

Why do all the blood and gore movies come out around Christmas and Valentine's instead of Halloween?

Why do all the blood and gore movies come out around Christmas and Valentine's instead of Halloween?
One reason is maybe to offer counter programming to the typical Christmas time films that are either family oriented or Oscar contenders.
Another is movies like the latest Saw tend to take a lot of the October business, so it is safer to come out when there aren't other movies similar to yours to compete with.
They didn't finish editing this movie until December, so it would have had to wait until next Halloween to come out.
What I don't understand is how Studios can hold on to completed films that have gotten good crowd reactions like Trick R' Treat and miss two Halloweens in a row. The movie is sort of about the spirit of Halloween specifically, all the money has already been spent on production, it's edited, looks great, and has been a fan favorite in advance screenings. How does something like that not get released at Halloween, much less at all?
