Windows Standby

I wanna start putting my computer in standby after a certain amount of time in order to help reduce my very large electricity bills. I'm kinda paranoid it will go to sleep in the middle of something important though.

Like what if it goes into standby in the middle of burning a DVD? Is my computer going to explode and create a black hole?

Also, is there a way I can set it to not go into standby if certain apps are running like uTorrent?

I cheat. I use a screensaver with "hot corners", and keep one corner set to "when ever the mouse is sitting here, do NOT kick in or go in to standby modes". Then when I'm burning DVDs and such, I just make sure the mouse is left up in that corner.

utorrent has an option to prevent standby while torrents are active.
