Anyone get it in? Wow it plays pretty well, very glad to see how the progress is coming along. Brings back memories.

If anyone else is in the beta we should set up a game.

What do you guys think of the beta?

I don't get it, what's the big deal, it's just Quake III with advertisements and it's free. you could get Quake III for $5 in most discount stores. It's a good game and all, but gaming has come a long way since.

I got in (actually forgot I'd even signed up) and holy shit is it good.

I didn't really play much Quake 3, by the time I had a copy it was old news and I wasn't really up on online gaming so I just played with bots for a bit.

This is pretty fantastic though, it's so fast and instantly respawning means you rarely get frustrated. It's a ton of fun and incredibly impressive for a browser game, it IS pretty much Quake 3.

My only gripe is the lack of widescreen in fullscreen mode (haven't even bothered with the in browser window).

I think my username if randomlyrossy if anyone wants to add me to their friends list on it.

For me it's the way you get to avoid the whole patching debacle, you don't need to install it, it's automatically online and apparently they're going to have friends lists and stuff. Just sounds like a whole lot less mucking around. Plus you can pretty much play it anywhere.

I like the idea of having friends list/stats/ect. Plus you can also play it almost anywhere you have access to a computer.

There are some tweaks (making the LG and rail less deadly, for example, and ammo pickups are changed up) and it has a ranking system for good online play. The big deal is pro-gamers will have their 1v1 game back in good shape.

It's a good game and all, but gaming has come a long way since. That's enough for some people though. More than the game, this is a nice reboot to the Quake audience. I know my friend would have never stopped playing the original Team Fortress on Quake if people were still into it.

To this day, more people play Counter-Strike than Call of Duty.

"they've just invented re released the wheel"?

erm...that didn't make sense or you need to remove something from that sentence.

and sure if thats how you want to look at it, thats your opinion. but this thread has no room for ignorance.

sure it does, it's a forum, I have an opinion and I'm expressing it in a respectful way.

Sorry for not wording my sentence in a pleasing manner.

I have asked for clarification on releasing a 9 year old game and calling it new. It's apparent that nothing has really changed with the game and I'm pointing out the bizarre nature of this. I fail to see how this thread doesn't have room for this?

As for free games you may want to have a look at this

I don't want to high jack the thread, but I'll just say that while it's not currently set for release on the Mac, there is a movement to get it released on the Mac eventually.

No one is calling it 'new'. It's a browser version of Quake 3, that's no secret, but not only is that immensely impressive, it's alot of fun and can be played by far more people than said 9 year old game.

I was in the BF: Heroes beta for a bit but I didn't play much, I agree it's one to watch though, however it's not quite as easy to jump into as Quake Live. Both games should be interesting to keep an eye on.

Well, look at it this way:

Q3 has been in bad shape for a pretty good while. They left OSP for competitive play when it wasn't developed anymore and CPMA picked up the slack. LG was too powerful in CPMA VQ3, movement was slower than in OSP, railhits were just plain weird. They've played in that setting for a while now.

Back during the last QuakeCon they had a tournament in Quake Live for all the pros and everything was "solved", everything was like it should be. Couple that with the fact that they've even tweaked things to make it even better; the 1v1 DM game pro gamers have needed is back. Like I tried to point out before you tried to summarize it as something wholly different: That's the big deal.

The first paragraph means nothing to me so I'll skip that one. Tweaks sounds pretty minor to me, but if you feel it really is drastic on what they've changed I'll give it a go.

Just a quick note to the couple of guys who have PMed me about beta invites (I'm too lazy to send a seperate PMs, it's 3AM afterall heh). I shall get um sent to you asap, would have done so already but the Quake Live site has been down all night for me so I haven't had the chance.

Also we should try and get a TRS match up going at some point,we should have enough people to get a little match.

Well, RandomlyRossy was kind enough to give me an invite. Sadly, there's apparently no love for the Mac. It doesn't seem to work unless you're on Windows.

That kind of sucks, it kind of takes away from the whole "play in your browser, anywhere" aspect. Oh well. :(

I'm hearing that it should run on the Mac eventually, maybe it's simply a case of waiting till it works on the PC. Now I haven't read anything official on that count, but check this

Good question, I wonder if a Q3 patch will come out to make it compatible.

randomlyrossy

I'm pretty sure it doesn't and won't, I mean the whole idea is that you just play it from your browser, I imagine there are a whole load of technical reasons for why it couldn't work either.

Really if you want to play it (when it comes out) there's nothing stopping you so it seems kinda redundant.

i guess you would need a good internet connection for this online verson i mean if im download p2p i guess that would not work so well as it downloads all the textures etc.

All the game assets load into your browser once as far as I can tell, it loads alot of stuff when you first log into the game. Then when you play an actual match it just briefly loads and that's it.

Not sure what you're getting at though, obviously you would have to free up your internet to play just like any online multiplayer game.

Wasn't a pain at all, actually. The only download bar of any sort I have seen yet was the one telling me they were downloading the "tutorial" for me, it's basically just a series of matches against the AI, to determine your skill level.

Brief update on this game, from my snowed in and niche perspective:

I played something like 9 matches yesterday, had a few ones on good old pro-q3dm6 (Campgrounds), one on q3dm13 (can't remember name) and then played one on "Almost Lost", one of the new maps for QLive.

Weapons: Shaft (lightning gun) and rail seem toned down, shaft ammo is capped at 150 and I don't know about the rail. If you've played 1v1 in Q3 before you know there's a limit to how long you get the rockets in packs of 10. Well, they've upped it to 25, so spam-rockets are more viable/common and together with what seems like a damage boost it makes the rocket launcher a much better weapon.

DM6 (Campgrounds): DM6 is just like you remember it from Q3 (pro-q3dm6) in 1v1. I haven't tried it for team deathmatch yet and I most likely won't, since I'm more about the 1v1. Personally, I found the LG to be as good of a pickup as before, but the new rail kind of let me give my opponents the rail more than in Q3. Sure, against someone of a high caliber who's exceptionally good with the rail you'll still want to steal rail and keep them from picking it up, but you'll have more leeway in Quake Live.

Red and yellow armor as well as mega health haven't been tampered with, but the stronger rocket launcher makes top (center) plateau an even better position for control over both mega health and red armor, with occasional sniping at yellow with rail if you catch them going for it. You'll probably want to go there if the opportunity arises, to have lock down on the whole map, as well as for the grenade launcher, so you can spam red if your opponent gets cocky.

DM13 (can't remember the name): Well, I haven't played this one much in Q3. Having seen a few matches, though, I can tell you I see no real difference in how it's played. Top is still crazy good for control with the rocket launcher and it's just slightly improved now. Dropping down occasionally will always be preferable to staying at top just timing the two yellows you have access to and mega is still in a shit place. :)

"Almost lost": Wow. Just wow... This map is awesome. I'd seen it before being played in the QuakeCon tournament and it seemed interesting, but it's way more interesting to play. 3 yellows, 2 are connected quite well at one side of the map, together with shards, plasma and rocket launcher. This side has vertical disadvantage, but plenty of walls and tight spaces for control if your opponent tries to charge you, or snipe you.

The remaining yellow is placed on the other side, in a kind of center area. A rail is stashed away in a water filled hole, so it's for someone who's managed to take absolute control over center arena. The LG is connected to center, though the one controlling 2 YAs can jumppad up to it and nab it. In the center arena with a spawn time of 2 minutes is a mega health. Together with the one yellow at center it makes up the "other side" of the map (though it's actually more of a third of the map in scale). The rocket launcher is somewhat accessible from center area, but if someone has good control over the two connected yellow armors he'll make you work for it.

The solution for the one controlling mega health and the center yellow is to nab the rail gun and snipe his opponent for a good opening at the connected yellows, I imagine, and start picking his opponent's control apart. After he gets a solid frag he can hope for good runs.

I played "Almost Lost" 5-5 at full time, going on for something like 3 minutes of sudden death, losing that one. It's one really exciting map and I'll be playing it lots more.

My account is 59GoNZ if anyone wants to add me. I'm probably going to be on nights here in Sweden, which is something like +6 hours from the east coast of the US (?). Obviously, lag would be a factor if we played across the Atlantic, though.

Edit:
If anyone's wondering why I didn't try tourney4 it's because I hate that map. :p

You do have to download and install a plugin for your browser too, just to clarify. It's pretty small though but worth a mention.

OK, yeah, but he'd have to download a client for anything anyway... :p

Edited my previous post:
Shaft is connected to center, not the two YAs. At one of the connected YAs is a plasma gun.
