Of course, the other explanation is that the people, buoyed with confidence that at last there is a firm hand on the wheel, are feeling more optimistic and willing to spend. We all know however that both arguments are just wet paint on a statistical insignificance.

None of which recognizes that the GDP decreased. Which means that even if people bought more stuff in January, they're just depleting stuff that is already in stock. Basically, after Christmas sales.

or people are just running out of stuff or need to replace stuff that is broken so they have to spend
that is what i thought when i saw the statistics
i'm going to buy a new computer soon not because i have confidence in anything but this one is close to dying

I'd say there really are too many "IF" factors going into retail sales to really make a strong statement when its only 1% either way. As I recall, this time last year, sales weren't exactly strong either (I used to be a manager at Steve and Barry's).
Nevertheless, the bellweather companies of Macy's, GAP Inc. (my current employer), Limited Brands, etc are all having problems. I think the only brand I can recall seeing doing well last month as Ambercrombie, which is more scary than anything.

They are expanding by about 150 stores and remodelling another 400.
There must be money in being cheap.

That and those guys that hold the "Going Out Of Business! Everything Must GO!" signs for the liquidators. Now THATS the business to be in now.

Its a race to the bottom right now as consumers from all economic classes are looking to save money, regardless of income. Keep an eye on retailers like Wal*Mart and Target, my guess is that they're going to drive retail sales for most of the industry.

But I'd still look more to the dollar stores and fast food restaurants.

If you're a big fan of Jim Cramer like I am, the big secret is to start pumping dollars into the food companies that produce the in-house brand stuff. One of them was Tree House, I can't remember the other (that company just bought Post cereal from Kraft, mind you).
I should be investing, but I've got more important things to do with my money.
