(I submitted this yesterday but it never showed up. Thought I'd try today, so Sorry if there's another thread)

Show can be found here for now...
www.viddler.com/neverendingrant

Me and a couple of buddies have been wanting to put together a show for a LONG time now (since July of last year). We slowly built up an idea and gathered some gear/knowledge, but kept delaying the actual shooting. I don't know if it was shyness/nervousness but last week I had had enough and said let's just film something!!

The Show
We will call it the Never Ending Rant. When coming up with an idea for a show, I always heard, "do a show about what you are passionate about". Since that is Media i.e. Movies, Music, TV and Podcasts I wanted to incorporate that. But knowing TRS already had that covered for the most part, we decided to do it on the other thing we are passionate about. Drinking and BSing lol.

What to know
This is a VERY VERY rough sketch of the show. The Background will be different, the editing will be different, but the basic concept is there. We were EXTREMELY nervous but like I said I just wanted to shoot and see if people would like it. Now that we have got the first show out of our systems... we are excited, and have been getting some GREAT feedback already!!! and I can't wait to film next week.

Feel free to make any suggestions on anything sound, lighting, background, concept... I am open to it all and would greatly appreciate any feedback. We were thinking of maybe standing at a bar or sitting behind a table... cutting the "review" section shorter like a 5-7 min segment... and obviously being more prepared. we literally sat down and started filming with no idea what we were going to talk about.

Thank you in advance

BTW - It did show up. 4 times in fact ... but you obviously didn't the rules for this forum (stickied up the top of the page ... nice and obvious).

Basic Rules For This Forum

1. All new threads are moderated.
...
4. No need to submit something more than once, give it a little time before your thread shows up.

And the thread title was also changed ... as per the posting rules you didn't read.

not exactly the feedback I was looking for but thanks anyways... glad we could get started off on the right foot.

anyways... I accidentally pressed the submit button the first time without actually putting a link to where the show was so I tried to stop it before it sent (which apparently failed). The second time I pressed submit I got a Database error. So I tried a third time which seemed to work. Then I wake up a day later to see no new thread, when I saw plenty of new threads appear elsewhere. (I am on other threads, that are moderated as well, and never waited more than a couple hours for a thread to show. Hence, why I thought my submission Might have slipped through the crack.) So I tried one last time. (and even apologized beforehand just in case)

But since you are a Mod I won't mention that it is arrogant of you to ASSUME I didn't read the nice, stickied rules when I did, many times actually to see if I missed a step in submitting or was doing something wrong. As there was no mention of any specific time frame to wait (which I think 1 day is plenty). And two, that the rules say not to name the thread "Feedback wanted" ... which I didn't (and there is by the way a thread named just that [feedback please], that you didn't feel the need to change) and last... that the rules in the thread you Moderate are "5)constructive criticism". Which I could take as criticism in submitting a new thread, but has nothing to do with a podcast I was looking for help on.

...I don't know what I did too you or what grudge you have with me, but as a moderator, I thought the goal was to help the others. I have no grudge with you and after this post hope we can remain acquantices on this forum (as I often see you on these forums and enjoy most of the feedback you and others give, which is why i felt comfortable asking for help here on something I was very nervous about posting in the first place). Thanks anyways. and now I know to be patient if/when I ever submit a new thread.

1. The (4th) thread was approved less than 24 hours after you posted it (the first thread).
2. The other "feedback please" threads were created prior to the addition of the "make the topic meaningful" rule.
3. I bear no grudges. Of the moderated requests added and awaiting approval, yours was approved - after editting the title. Others were not for various reasons.

You will get good feedback in here, but after denying several threads that were created because people don't read the rules - you got the short end of the stick. Sorry about that. As a volunteer, moderating can be frustrating sometimes.

And ... back to reviewing your podcast.

I appreciate that response and offer my apologies if I sounded too harsh as well... and now realize that the rules were updated VERY recently. I respect you even more than before for clarifying that for me. and I guess I was just so nervous about the feedback I jumped the gun on waiting for the original thread to post. I know the frustrations of moderating, hence why I no longer do it, and can respect that you volunteer.

...More on the Topic...

we shot episode #2 tonight!!! tried a couple different things... we are very excited and have been getting some GREAT feedback... Thank you all again!

Just watched the first episode. Great job on the pilot. Really enjoyed the "rant" section of the show. I, too, hate inconsiderate drivers. I'm usually a pretty chill guy, unless I'm behind the wheel. That's when the profanities fly.

The concept is pretty good, and I'm looking forward to seeing the changes for the second episode. I know it might be difficult depending on your situation, but one priority production-wise would definitely be improving sound. It's not horrible, but can always be improved.

Sometimes being prepared can help. It might be good for the review section just to hammer out what points you want to hit on. But I would probably just wing it with the rant section.

Also, don't worry too much about being nervous. I completely understand, and it definitely gets easier and less unnerving the more you do it. First episode of our show I felt really weird looking into the camera, but it's getting better.

Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to seeing more!

Keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to seeing more!

First off thank you very much for the feedback, greatly appreciated. I've been so wrapped up getting things organized for the show and in my life that i've only had time to watch about 5 mins of your show. But once everything gets settled down around here I'll def check it out more. I liked what I saw so far.

As for us...
We filmed the second episode last night. We forgot we had some mics laying around so we used those, and editing today, the sound is a lot better. we eventually want to get some lavaliers though.
we were more prepared for the review section this time, but I messed up a little bit and forgot to let my co-host talk about his subjects so we had to re film that after... hopefully Ill be able to fix it in editing. We'll get it down next time. and I still want to cut it even shorter. we went 13 mins I believe and Im thinking 7-9 mins.
Def. hear you about the "winging" of the Rant. I write general subjects down and we should be able to expand off that... might even try picking the subjects out of a hat at random.
We tried a new location, which we LOVE and will probably use from now on, but we weren't prepared for the poor lighting. So the lighting suffered horribly in the second ep.

Thanks for watching and I'll be sure to give you some proper feedback once I have a min to catch up on yours.

couple of thoughts, production wise (still watching first one) Did you film it wide, but compress it short? You guys look squished.

Crop the frame. Sit closer and film yourselves from the waste up or closer. No need to see your (perfectly nice but unnecessary) legs.

What is it with "modern" cameras with the built in mike recording the camera internal souns. I filmed my podcast with an ancient vidbeast, and NEVER got that sound. (that goes for messofmusic, too) I think camera makers got cheap with mics once digicams got popular.

Content wise- (still first ep) fun. Skip the movie/music/tv reviews. Just rant your asses off. THAT is why your here. And others *cough*TRS*cough* already got that covered. Maybe in you prep you could build the movie/music/tv faves into the rant, like your buddy could have during the comicrant.

Thanks for the Great feedback... I'm uploading ep 2 as I type this... we made some good improvements. although, we werent prepared for the horrible lighting situation so that will improve for ep #3... also the review stuff we want to be very brief, and since we are fans of TRS ourselves, we want to try and cover different things they don't. They cover a lot of mainstream stuff so we are going to try and cover lesser known media. And like I said keep it very brief as we want our show to be mostly about "the Rant". The camera "buzz" was eliminated this episode with our incorporation of mics.

I think Ep #2 is a lot funnier/better than Ep #1 so can't wait to get feedback on it!!!

Good Eye... When I encoded the video the default is set to standard 4:3 I didn't notice till it was too late... made sure I clicked it for ep#2, which I'm still trying to upload to viddler (crashes a lot during upload) might try Vimeo.

I did have a Viddler issue for episode 9. Uploaded a lower quality video first time. Tried to re-upload higher quality and got errors. When it finally did upload it audio and video lost sync.

I'll watch ep #2 tomorrow at work. Glad to hear the mics worked out. Now it's time for bed.

Interesting, I'm not too good at encoding/editing/ or anything for that matter, yet (learning it all as I go) so my videos have been right under the 500mb limit ~475 for both~ so maybe thats my problem. I have been using the simple uploader since they said the batch uploader usually gives errors but the flash uploader looks like its working better its @ 70% and usually I would get an error by 25% with the simple. (go figure) I'm glad I have verizon FIOS so even uploading the 500MB file only takes 5~7 mins. it would drive me crazy if I had to wait longer with all these errors. YAY! just finished uploading as I finished typing! SUCCESS! So just gotta wait for viddler to encode I'll post/tweet when its done... but for now its off to the gym...

I've discovered the file size is more directly related to video bitrate rather than size dimensions or audio. Higher bitrate means higher quality, but also larger file size.

Our latest episode I encoded in mp4 at 480x270 and about 1400kbps I think. It produced a pretty good quality video at somewhere around 250 mb for 21 minutes or so.

Looking forward to checking it out.

Thanks soooo much on the encoding advice!!! I found out (I think) why I was having problems with viddler. The audio compressor I was using (to save space) was proprietary and was causing problems, so even if it did upload, the encoding (on viddlers side) would fail. Unfortunately, for me I already deleted the Source files yesterday as it was taking up 30 gigs on my hard drive. All I had was my proprietary video that was only working with on specific program. Long story short I had to do some creative thinking to get a usable format. So I am re-encoding it on my side, which will be done in about an hour... then the upload and encode on viddlers side, however long that takes... and if all goes well it will be up sometime this afternoon. BTW watched one of your episodes, I want to watch a couple more and then give you some good feedback... But so far it looks good... like the table a lot better and you guys are very knowledgable.

You're welcome for the advice. I wish I could get the quality and size that the Rev3 shows get. The latest TRS is 166 MB for the small version. Not sure how they do it.

I messed up the latest episode of our show and forgot music in the "traveling to Philly" montage. Was going to go and fix it only to find out I deleted some of the source files because for some reason I named them "episode 9" instead of 10. So it's just going to stay silent I guess. Sucks, doesn't it?

Thanks for the feedback. I kind of chuckled when you said we're very knowledgeable. I'm glad we come across that way! We seriously find some of the news articles online right before we shoot. Happy to know it doesn't look that way.

Kind of OT, but if anyone knows a way to market an internet show, it would be appreciated. We've made a Facebook group/page, a MySpace (in which we comment on bands' sites, kind of spam but not annoying), Twitter, etc. Basically all the online presence we can make. We handed out flyers in front of the venue to everyone in line where we did the interviews in Philly. Also, we're shooting a promo video to submit to Rev3 Beta. Any other ways you can think of? Thinking of making stickers or something to send to anyone who wants them so they can put them in places we can't get to (like other parts of the country).

Only 2 episodes in and we are excited for the potential of what it could be... wish I could get financial backing and start my own rev3 studio and have people send in their submissions to be on our network.

As far as "Rev 3 Quality" I am going to submit a youtube video question to Tekzilla about how they encode either tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully they answer and we can get some better tips on how to get better quality.

...I planned on watching your shows today but ended up having to take my dad to the hospital. nothing serious but thats actually worse cause we were stuck in urgent care all day. i'll try to get to them tonight....

One question I had for everyone...

The length of the show... does it seem too long???

The Diggnation episodes I like are the ones that go off on tangents and are 40 - 60 mins long (in fact, thats what I envisioned our show to be, All the funny Banter/Tangets of Diggnation w/o the boring stories, lol jk I love d-nation), but I wouldn't say we are Kevin and Alex "banter status" yet... We had about 55 mins worth of footage but I cut it shorter to 40 mins so it didn't seem as long... what does everyone think?

Haha way to call us out... it wont be a civilized discussion, just not a necessarily negative one all the time... we just filmed episode 3 and it was a disaster (video/audio technical difficulties) so we were far from civilized because we were pissed LOL... and I'm predicting Ep4 will be us "ranting" about the production of ep.3... so expect an "explicit warning" for the next couple of shows ;)

Ok, watched it. Was fun. It was a little long, I think. You guys interrupted each other more than last week, at one point I was actually frustrated because you couldn't even set the stage for the topic for about 3 minutes. (exageration)

I don't know if that is a "built in" bar, but if you can pull it a little further from the wall that would be cool. Guys looked cramped, with no visual depth. Mics totally helped sound, but you need to move them less when you are talking.

Looking forward to seeing how you "fix" the (technical) disaster that is ep 3!

Episode 3 was hilarious, despite the sound problems, Short and sweet, and truely a neverendingrant. It really was like diggnation without the digg stories, which these days, with Diggnation, would be a good thing.

Lots of hilarious lines this week. Getting more comfortable in front of a camera/behind a mic. Great job.

Still, need better lighting, better set. Shaddows behind you were distracting. Keep up the great work.

Thanks soo much... I don't know if you can tell or not but for Episode 3 we moved the bar about another foot and a half away from the wall... any difference?

Episode 4 we are hopefully going to have a better lighting situation and are working on some kind of background/green screen maybe. And also some mics stands so we don't have to hold/move the mics. We had a lot more footage that went to waste because of technical difficulties. (most of it I thought was funnier than the stuff we kept) but I think the episode was a good length time wise.

We are definitely getting more used to talking and I don't even notice the camera anymore. which is good cause I was really self concious/nervous in the beginning.

Thanks again everyone...

and our "crew" aka the 3 different people we have had watching the camera and being our "sync clapper" aren't too involved with the internets either.

But we do talk about everything that anyone brings up/suggest... whether or not they want to respond is up to them I guess...

Very entertaining episode #3. If you don't want to worry about holding the mics, and you can also talk with your hands, Radioshack has cheap clip-ons. We got ours for $25 each maybe? They're not wireless, just clip-on.

Anyway, definitely get the lighting and technical issues worked out. But the content is great, so keep up the great work. I might send an email sometime and tell you something I want to hear you rant about.

Cool, Thanks I was actually just looking around for a cheap lavalier alternative, I'll have to stop into RdioShack before we film tomorrow...

That was actually one of my ideas I wanted to do for the show, "if we ever got popular enough" was too have people email us topics, and we pick one or draw them at random from a bowl or something. Thanks for the Suggestions!!!

I'd love to see a "random rant" as well. Maybe have the cameraman filter through the email and pick all the rant suggestions and throw them in a hat or something. That way you won't actually see them. Or set up another email address that just he can read so you guys don't have time to think about it.

That is, if you're good on your toes. I'm not sure if I'd be good enough on my toes to pull that off and make it entertaining.

Good solution. And from what I've seen, they could rant about anything. Maybe the should have a timer on the bar, buzzez after 5 minutes. If they can't rant (on topic) til then, the emailer gets a prize! :D

Haha love the ideas... We usually are pretty good at making things up on the spot. If you notice Gabe and myself, look at my computer screen a lot. I have up random words or recent topics and when we feel we need to segway we just pick a different word or topic. So what you see on the show is basically all off the tops of our heads. We prepare our Reviews ahead of time but none of the "rant" is talked about before hand. That's why i like the viewer submitted idea... it would be the same as it is now but give the viewers some interaction with the show. And we could give them credit/prize? haha for their submission.

P.S. The off the top of my head made my Top 5 hottest celebrities interesting... My list would have been different if I had time to prepare but off the top of my head those are the only ones I could think of lol... last episode we did top 5 Man Crushes or "bromances" but it was part of the unusable material that got cut out...

Very entertaining episode #3. If you don't want to worry about holding the mics, and you can also talk with your hands, Radioshack has cheap clip-ons. We got ours for $25 each maybe? They're not wireless, just clip-on.

Took your advice went down to RadioShack and got one of the clip-on mics, went home and tested it...

INCREDIBLE!!! I'm going to have to tell Gabe to get one... I can't wait to film without having to hold my mic tomorrow!!!

Awesome! They really are pretty good quality for cheap. If you got the RadioShack brand, the only thing I don't like is how short the wires are. Other than that they're pretty good, just make sure you've got the switch turned to "on" and turn it off when not in use. Made that mistake already.

Looking forward to a new, hands-free episode soon!

Wow just a minute in on ep 4 and already, much better sound and lighting. And jeeze, even did picture in picture. NICE!

Live blogging...

Joy Division was amazing. Not thrilled with that remix. Joy Division has a special place in my heart, so recutting is er... not good.

Doh, you do cool background music (at appropriate levels, thank god) and then when The rant comes on, wimpy type, no sound affect, needs some sort of "stamp" for the intro to the segment...

rant: Dude, JOY DIVISION is the GODFATHER of EMO!

too many funny comments to comment on. You guys slay me.

Top gun!!!!!! so gay, oh, you just said that, not that there's anything wrong with that. Dammit.

BK! Desert island was YOUR idea, you shoulda been prepared.

Oh, shit, hahaha, with the sailboat. Who was that?

Wow, I aint gonna argue with your choices, but dang! TOP GUN???

I must be old. NO idea who Sublime is.

Not an incubus fan. but at least I know them.

Tickle your gander, hahahahaa

Absolutely Fabulous did it's run, then was brought back after a few years for a new season.

loving the "incidental" music behind ya. Fun idea.

God I hate Medical shows, and never worked in the medical field. (does "quincy" count?)

Limited run british shows:

Red Dwarf
Absolutely Fabulous
The Young Ones
Little Britain

My Desert Island choices.

Music:
Poe: Haunted
Led Zeppelin: Physical Graffiti
Clash: London Calling

Movies:
Empire Strikes Back
Rumble Fish
His Girl Friday

Great episode. You guys getting your sea legs.

Thanks we try =)

Yea, I thought I was a nice guy but it seems I accidentally offend a different group every episode... i blame the liquid charisma =)

BK! Desert island was YOUR idea, you shoulda been prepared.
It actually was Gabe's, I just made the segway... I do need to improve on that area though.

Oh, shit, hahaha, with the sailboat. Who was that?
That was Jenna Fischer aka my top pick from our hottest celebrities list =)

Wow, I aint gonna argue with your choices, but dang! TOP GUN???
Top Gun and La Bamba were the only two movies I ever wanted to watch as a kid lol

I must be old. NO idea who Sublime is.
you know now that I think about it Sublime we probably just a Southern California thing... loved their music though...

Stole that from one of our favorite podcasts... Smodcast. Play a song in the background that is somehow linked to what we are say i.e. played the song "stuck on a desert island" when we were talking about being stuck on a desert island, played Garden Grove - sublime, when discussing Sublime... it could be a fun concept. like an 'easter egg' in the show to find the meaning of the song in relation to the topic.

Great episode. You guys getting your sea legs.
We appreciate it... we are definitely feeling more comfortable in front of the camera now.

Thanks for all the Feedback!

Definitely a step up, despite the minor audio glitches.

I agree with rabidbadger, a graphic of some sort for The Rant would be cool.

You brought back some nostalgic memories talking about all the TV shows I used to watch.

Also, Sublime wasn't just a SoCal thing, definitely a big following here. And I agree that pretty much everyone (in our age range) can enjoy them.

Good to know... I was pretty sure they went national but it would have made sense if they were just in Cal. or the west coast for that matter... You know they have staying power when they haven't been a band for over 10 years and they still play it on the radio!!!

It's awesome and they're amazing! It's hard to pick a favorite song of theirs because they're all so good. A couple weeks ago, a few members played a "reunion" show and it was well received, plus they played a new song. Hopefully they've got things in the works to release some new stuff with a replacement singer (though it probably won't be the same)

Episode #5 is out today!!!

Go check it out and let us know what you think...
(I know the framing is off. it was a combo of having no camera guy this week and having too small of a green screen)

description;
This week we talk about; TV show Kings, 30 Rock, Saturday morning cartoons, childhood hopes/toys, Gabe's bad luck and we have a new background! Liquid Charisma = 32oz. King Cobra

live tweeting ep 5

Sweet green screen, looks really good for the first time you have done it.

Might not shrink yourselves down THAT small during the tv review.

Woohoo. New Rant logo, and rant background!

I'm seeing some def SteveTRS influence it the production, always a good thing.

I'm old. my sat morn cartoons.

Rocky and Bullwinkle
Looney Toons
Magilla Gorilla
Top Cat
The Beatles cartoon
Jackson 5 cartoon
animated Star Trek

"what do they call that? Sound?" hahaha

The pitch and pie chart graphic is classic, especially with the way Gabe was gesticulating.

Umm, I don't think anyone is gonna be stalking you guys.

OUCH (brown recluse pic)

choppy ending, but good ep.

Can't wait til vegas ep!

I was surprised at how easy it is! I was worried cause our "green screen" cost all of $7, so I didn't know how well it would work.

i'll have to figure something out... any bigger and you couldn't tell what was behind us... it also had to do with the bad framing of the camera

another rhing that took me 5 mins to make and it turned out OK. i must be getting good at this stuff ;) jk

Thanks... I'm trying to be original as possible but doing it that way makes things so much easier for me.

Two things I wanted to spend more time editing to make them look better but I literally only had a couple free hours to edit this weeks show...
Can't wait til vegas ep!
Me either... it's been too long since i've been out there... Gabe probably won't make it out but if he doesn't I might have the original 3rd Never Ending Rant host come on or one of our other friends come on... they are equally if not more hilarious than ourselves.

Nice job on this latest episode. The editing is definitely getting better and I'm liking the added humor with editing, stuff that you throw in visually rather than what you guys are saying. Seems you got all the glitches worked out from previous episodes. I love when you get the editing down to a routine and it's a huge relief.

I also love when you guys talk about old cartoons and TV shows because that's all stuff I watched as a kid too. Also, Animaniacs and Tiny Toons were awesome. As well as the Tiny Toons sports game for Sega. Spent hours playing that, and more hours in college because my roommate and I bought a Sega and a bunch of games for about $20.

Keep up the great work. Looking forward to a Vegas episode too.

Thank You!! Surprisingly I had maybe 1/10th of the time to edit this episode as I did the other ones... I would have liked to clean a few things up but had no time. I think of A LOT of things I should have said during the show when I am editing, so I try to make up for it by throwing in some humor. Like Animaniacs and Tiny Toons!! I loved those shows!!! But coming up with stuff on the spot I tend to forget somethings. Gabe has picked about 90% of the "topics" we segway into so he prepares for them more than I do. Thats kinda why I want to do a random bowl topics... so we can be on equal ground. Thanks for watching!

Oh BTW... Gabe is officially not going to vegas tomorrow... at least one, maybe more, of my friends is willing to step up and do it with me... so it should be interesting, they are all hilarious though so im not worried. But me and gabe are going to a bachelor party in vegas in another month so we'll get both of us in vegas somehow! haha

It's really fun, isn't it? Lots of potential, some realized already. Great fun. Tell your friends! (this coming from someone who has no involvement and/or stake in the show) Just enthusiastic. For good reason.

I am definitely passed the shyness of putting myself on camera and on the internets... at first I was shy to tell people about watching episodes but now I feel like i promote it too much ;)

I am in vegas now and we are planning on shooting episode 6 tomorrow. it should be a lot of fun! I am also going to try to shoot some extra footage of us walking "the strip" along with the resort we are staying at. It is EXTREMELY nice and we got upgraded to a penthouse suite!!! stay tuned :)

Episode 6 is up!!!
This show is a little unstructured and has very minimal/rough editing, for this I apologize... But in my defense I was very busy this week celebrating my birthday! I almost decided not to film/release an episode this week at all (being I wouldn't have time to edit and Gabe wasn't going to be co-hosting) but figured a sub-par episode would be better than nothing at all. I was really worried after shooting but once stuff got cut out it was better than I thought.

Let me know what you think about the 3 man set-up... Eman (one of the original creators for the show) might be making more regular appearances. I tried to cut out most of the times we interrupted each other too much or that were just not funny to my ear... We had shot over 1 1/2 hours of footage so I had a lot to work with.

It's a little different this week but hope you guys enjoy it!
