I'd go for it if you want one and can afford it. Think of all the trees you'll save. And if you read newspapers, you can get newspapers like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal for like $10/month each delivered to your Kindle before sunrise as compared to $500/year for the paper subscription. And you can surf the web on it and do mp3's. Also, aren't books a lot cheaper to buy on it than buying a physical book? If so, it won't take long to recoup your investment.

Since you're a student, you'd probably appreciate the searchable text feature. It'd be great if you could buy textbooks on the Kindle -- a lot cheaper and it would allow you to easily search for keywords that you are looking for. Imagine carrying around a single Kindle instead of like 5 or 6 huge and heavy textbooks? You can have easily store every textbook that you need for a 4 year degree on a small part of the Kindle's memory, and all this info. would be keyword searchable.

I assume by they he means Amazon the seller and I would say for what it does it isn't worth it unless you read ALOT, and the fact that it locks you to amazon so you have to buy the books from them, I would assume they could afford to sell it at a loss.
If I ever brought one I would never by a book from amazon, I could just copy a PDF across.

You can get a netbook/nettop and do the exact same thing with pdf documents plus be a real computers for much less money. Amazon also has a remote kill switch in the k2 to stop you from reading certain documents and doing certain things. Research it!!!
