Hey guys,

So here is the episode I did with David Chen discussing movie scores.

http://www.slashfilm.com/2009/02/27/trachtenberg-filmcast/

Also, if you don't already listen to their podcast, you should be, if you like our show it is totally up your alley. Over and hour of geeks like us geeking out over movies...

Thanks!
dan

Thanks Dan, I was actually going to ask you to post this. As a movie score fan since before you when born (honestly, I was 13 and already a fan) I'm very interested in your opinion.

As a teen, I used to tape the movie credits off TV with my cassette player. Imagine how stoked I was when to found out they made LP's of movie soundtracks. My first was Star Wars, I wish I still had it.

I like the way you referred to yourself in the third person in the forum thread, as if someone else was recommending we listen :P

I really enjoyed it the other day. I was dog walking over the weekend and listened to the whole thing there. Really awesome picks for the show.

Dan, I still want you to do your own Movie show. Maybe snoopmikey might like a second job. ;)

I'm at least hoping for some more /filmcast appearances. Unless Dan wants to do another podcast, but I really liked that specialized topic show.

I was in that chat room live for the first half of the podcast recording, good times.

Dan, you ever go to Screen Rant for movie news?

I really enjoyed this. I adore movie and scores. You guys picked so many songs that I just love; Crimson Tide, Friday Night lights, and Bourne. simply amazing.

aside from movies, I can't get enough of the music from Battlestar Galactica. It's probably my favorite music from any television show. It just makes the show that much more rad.

Just listened to it. I really liked it. Never thought I would listen to people discussing soundtracks/scores. But since Dan advertised his guest appearance I downloaded the /film cast.

I also have many soundtracks/scores in my CD rack. Among my fav scores are (just from the top of my brain, for sure I am missing some):

Last of the Mohicans (one of the best ever)
The Magnificent Seven (super good)
Star Trek
Star Wars
LOTR
Braveheart
90s Disney Masterpiece scores
Three Nuts for Cinderella
Forrest Gump Suite
Mupperts Christmas Carol
The Rock
Pirates of the Caribbean (I am also done with that specific Hans Zimmer sound since The Rock, but Pirates is an exception)
Jurassic Park
Opening of Kung Fu Panda (I like the groovey big band-ish sound)
Samurai Champloo (If you can call the Opening a score)
The Piano
And Just recently: John Adams (Boy is that a rad sound. Haven't seen the TV show yet just the intro on youtube. Great intro and great score!)

I must say, these days games have awesome scores as well. Maybe Dan will do a game score list as well. Would be rad. I just remember that I like CoD, MoH and Battlefield scores. Super powerful!

I think scores are today's operas/symphonies. BTW check out Dvorak's No. 9 From the New World. ;)

@masherscf: I also used to tape TV shows' intro music back in the days (Ghostbusters, Streethawk, Duck Tales...) and I kept listening to it with my buddy. Good times. We shared our records by copying our tapes over the air because we only had single-tape tape decks back then :D. Technology has come a long way.

Cheers

Now enjoy the John Adams score:

Dan, I really hope you are reading this because I've got a great recommendation for you. You should check out Igor Stravinsky. Film scores are so different from the old orchestral music, and it's all thanks to Stravinsky. His influence on today's classical music is without comparison. You've probably already heard him, or at least of him, but if you haven't - go check him out.

Sounds like movie music, only it's not. It's from before real movie music. The Rite of Spring is probably one of the greatest classical pieces ever. Back in the day it was so groundbreaking and controversial that the premier actually caused riots.

This is kind of a shameless double post bump, but I really think Dan would like Stravinsky.

Love "Last of the Mohicans," I think "Titanic" might bump it out of the top sales slot. However the "Mohicans" soundtrack is a little bi-polar because it was written by two-people.

Love Stravinsky, in fact, was planning on seeing his stuff here in LA...

Nice, I'm having a listen now, should be interesting to hear your thoughts :)

EDIT:

haha, didn't realise how long it would be when I started listening!
anyway, without getting more in depth (and probably making a slight fool of myself).

I think you both had some very valid points. I can't say I agree with everything you both said, but i certainly agree with some of your choices and I'm actually really glad you didn't play any of the John Williams themes, despite the fact that I do enjoy the odd one!

Thanks,
Jon.

just a little comment you might pass on to dave chen:
please get a better quality mic that's less muffled. I enjoy the show but I'd love to hear some clear crisp voices.

Dan I gotta say I really am glad you mentioned the site you guys went for music from trailers. I've been trying to figure out the music used in the Watchmen trailers as they've been stuck in my head for awhile now. For anyone else looking for it the site is:

I'm a soudtrack head as well.... soundtrackie ? soundtrackaholic ( I don't understand the endings of words)... .. but I want to give a special shout out to The Ususal Suspects for being such a brilliant score, and being done by the editor.

I know I'm a month late to this party but I just listened to the podcast at work today. I love John Williams but I'm very glad Danny and Dave focused on some composers who may not have as much name recognition with the general public. I've loved film scores since I was a kid and was lucky enough to get to take a class in college that focused on film music.

I moved into a new apartment a few months ago and all of my CDs were boxed up and stuffed into a storage facility but this weekend I'm going to go retrieve all my film score discs and load them onto my iPod.

I hope we get another heads up if Danny does this again. I greatly enjoyed the episode.
