IGN (9/10) summary:

"MadWorld looks like a beautiful piece of moving art. Director Shigenori Nishikawa has admitted to comic book influences like Sin City and parallels could certainly be drawn to unique movies like Renaissance, both of which feature similar black and white presentations. The style itself is not original, but we've never seen it done like this in a videogame before and the end result is a stunning success."

"The black and white nature of the game is only compromised by the color red, which makes its presence known every time main character Jack, a ripped mystery man with a chainsaw for an arm, cuts an enemy in two, lops off a head, or pulls out someone's beating heart and crushes it. MadWorld is filthily brutal, never blinking in its quest to make mutilation funny. The concept might sound ridiculous, but the truth is that you will laugh as you battle your way through the grungy subways and Japanese dojos while shish-kabobbing enemies with long spears or blasting off their heads with golf clubs. It's all just so ludicrously overdone -- in the same way that Ash cutting off his own hand in Evil Dead 2 is -- that you can't help but giggle"

"Platinum Games has utilized a very simple, but effective control scheme and as a result MadWorld is immediately playable. Jack himself is controlled tightly with the nunchuk's analog stick and pointer functionality is tossed to the side for a combat system that relies heavily on smart gestures. Not waggle, mind you, but simple gestures to effect many of the previously noted finishers"

"It's easy to shrug off a story in a beat-'em-up -- traditionally, they're not very good -- but bear in mind that Yasumi Matsuno of Final Fantasy fame penned the exposition in MadWorld. The end result is by no means exceptional, but the writing is strong, there are a number of twists and turns along the way, some cliches slashed, and it's all backed by excellent production values. The voice acting is also moody and believable. "

"The initial play-through only takes about five or six hours to complete, typical of a beat-'em-up. Of course, I would argue that you will have more fun in this five or six hours than you would in 20 with some lesser title...There's definitely good replay value here, even if at first glance the content seems slim. And if the challenge of playing on hard isn't enough, Platinum Games has also included a two-player split-screen mode where you and a buddy can compete in the various mini-challenges, like Man Darts, from the single-player adventure."

"I realize that not everybody will find MadWorld's unique visual and aural presentation appealing, but to me, the game is an instant collector's item and a Wii showpiece, not just for its amazing style, but for its label-busting content. Anybody who says Nintendo's console is just for kids will see things very differently after a few chainsaw- induced mutilations. More importantly, though, MadWorld does not place emphasis on style over gameplay, so there's plenty of fun, smart mechanics to back up the overwhelmingly slick look and sound of the title. You'll be floored by some of the scenarios that await you in the fast-moving beat-'em-up, surprised by the unexpectedly well-made storyline, and simultaneously grossed out and cracked up by all of the completely over-the-top gore. Even with some camera issues, some repetition, and a decidedly short single-player mode (if you play it on normal difficulty), SEGA and Platinum Games have still created Wii's first truly excellent game of the year.

I'm begging you, buy this game so that we'll see more like it. "

Sure do wish the Wii had demos, because all the videos I've seen made me think "meh," but I'd still like to try it and buy if I like it. But if I fork out $10 to rent it, I'm just going to finish it and return it.

I loved No More Heroes, I loved Sin City. I want to try this game, great design, cool battles, but it looks a bit bloody IMO.

This looks like one of those game where one is enough.

sorry if i missed this in the OP, but it's still not clear to me what this game is about...and if the single player is only 5 hours, what's the multiplayer like? do i have to input FRIEND CODES to play with people?

i'm just nervous that the visual style will be nice, but the graphics will be so bad that i'm going to hate it.

My review should be on 1UP sometime early today. Although not without some flaws I had a ton of fun playing this game.

BTW, we'll be live streaming the game tonight at 5PM PST.

I'm really suprised at the lack of excitement for this game. Especially considering the comments from IGN. Hopefully the 1Up review backs that up and maybe people might start taking notice. If the opinions I've seen on this board and another are anything to go by, the game is going to flop at retail and not just because it's an adult rated Wii title. I hope that doesn't happen because I honestly believe this is the watershed title for the Wii. If this game flops I can't see anyone doing adult rated games on the system again.

:(

I have the game preordered on Amazon. Hopefully I'll get the game some time this century.

I always seem to have bad luck preordering from Amazon, but I got 1 day shipping so hopefully I will get it the 12th like the website says.

For some reason they always seem to get video games late. Maybe they're low on the distribution list or something, I don't know.

Edit: Hmm, says it's "shipping soon" in my order page.

None of my friends have a Wii. Well, I have a few co-workers who have Wiis, but they're at offices in other cities. Plus, they don't play them anymore either, after getting their PS3s. Any of my local friends only play PS3. I don't have any friends with 360s. At least not in town.

I dunno. Maybe it's time to mod this puppy...

Nah.

Edit: I thought MadWorld was only rated M for Mature, what with retailers refusing to carry and console manufacturers refusing to license AO games and all?

Yeah I think it's M rated in the USA, but it's 18 rated in the UK, meaning only folks aged 18 and over can buy it.

I will be buying this tomorrow, it's one of my most anticipated games right now. (Creators of Okami and Viewtiful Joe, how can you go wrong?)

I will be incredibly disappointed if the guys don't review it on the show, too. Wii needs more love.

Yeah, actually. I trust TRS more than most other reviewers, to be honest. I'd like to hear their thoughts for sure.

Oh, and Co-Op too. I like their format. Hope they talk about it too.

I'm really suprised at the lack of excitement for this game.

Me too. The art style looked great, it's a game geared more towards gamers and less towards the Wii's casual audience. I'm dying to play this thing but I'm trying so hard to be good and actually play the games on my pile of shame before buying many more (RE5 is the exception). I'm soo close to breaking down and buying this and Pikmin.

I had my reservations for the game. Seemed like it'd be repetitive and the art style would hurt more than help the game. But from the reviews and watching more levels in action, I might think about picking this up. I am a little hesitant because of the short game time, so it'll probably be a title I pick up at a cheaper price.

The reviews seem to indicate that Hard mode is a significant step up in all aspects of the game, so you'll probably get more out of that mode. However, if it's quick to finish it's quick to resell at a good price.

Some of the best talent in the industry at platinum games.
The very creator of Resident evil himself and talent from the DMC series former clover studios talent who did Godhand Okami Viewtiful joe.

The writer for the story who wrote some Final Fantasy games.
Some of you who watch anime will recognize Jacks voice as the same voice actor from the english version of Spike from cowboy bebop.

So yes this game is chalk full of talent behind it.

I get mine from amazon tomorrow, and despite my excitement will not judge it till I play it but the fact it's getting so much high reviews should not be a shocker.

I do not preorder games on general basis ESP for big name franchises since they will make another no matter what.
This is a new IP from a independent and talented developer taking a huge risk and that I support.

I got the game today. The game was available at stores on Tuesday and I got it Thursday with 1 day shipping. Hmm... I wish there was a store closer to me that I could go to pick up games.

Anyway, the game is quite cool. I like how many options you have to take out the enemies. You feel totally badass. But the game is far from easy. I'm playing on whatever difficulty level you start with and I've died a few times. So those worried about that, shouldn't.

Definitely anxious to delve into more. I've heard good things about the story too. So that's a little surprising.

Gotten past the first two bosses and indeed this game is really fun.

Seriously don't rent this game if you can afford another 50$ just buy it..it's worth it.
