View Full Version : Non FPS Co-operative Gaming Recommendation Needed

Since we have the forum for it now ...
Last Christmas I quietly shutdown the mod chipped Xbox in the stereo cabinet, and replaced it with a shiny new PS3.
I bought a copy of Little Big Planet to go with it. Something my wife and I could play together. It has saved me from countless Law and ORder repeats over the past couple of months, but last week we beat it. OK, we can go back and try to Ace every level, but - apart from the 3x and 4x stages, we have all the rewards.
So. What now? She isn't into shooters, and I want to find a game we can play together. I have Lego Star Wars which we will start this weekend probably, but can anyone recommend any other games that are:
1. Co-operative mutliplayer (not online).
2. Platform scrollers (she seems comfortable with this idea - she is NOT a gamer).
Anyone have some thoughts? One of the Sonic games maybe??

If you've got a tolerance for kid-oriented games, Lego Star Wars, Indy, Batman may be up your alley.

Yeah, anything Lego is a good choice. If you're up for some PSN games, there's the PixelJunk games that are great for multiplayer (I believe local). Monsters and Eden are a good choice.

Any of the Lego titles, Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Guitar Hero all worked for me and my fiancée in the past :)

I'd have to also say Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I had a blast playing it and with friends was just as much fun. Karaoke Revolution can be fun though the current gen versions don't have as many fun songs or large selection.

Damn shame you've got a PS3, as the Wii would be perfect for her as a non-gamer...

Damn shame you've got a PS3, as the Wii would be perfect for her as a non-gamer...Justification for the PS3 was BluRay. We are movie junkies, and getting a gaming console as part of the package was a bonus that we have taken full advantage of :)

I see Lego games in your future. Sabrina and I love 'em. And, the kids love 'em more.
BTW, we're both completely frustrated with LBP.

For co-op:
Dark Kingdom is cheap these days, and it's an action RPG with co-op support.
Spyro has co-op support.
PixelJunk Eden and Monsters both have co-op.
What about a fighting game? My wife likes to play Mortal Kombat, and my sister LOVES MK games... Seems to be woman-friendly, as far as fighting games go.
For side-scrollers:
Bionic Commando Rearmed is a side-scrolling platformer. It's not necessarily easy, though. And you do shoot...
Crash Commando is side-scrolling, but it takes a while to adjust to the shooting. I like it though. But yeah, you have to shoot.
Prince of Persia Classic is another one. No shooting.
Can't think of any more right now.

But at least the Wii can play DV-- oh wait.

Oh we loves that. There's this one level that we just don't have the skill to get through.

The Wii can play DVD, Xvid, DivX...it just can't do Blu Ray.
:)
There must be plenty of co-op games on PSN?

Oh god, my wife is the stereotypical uncoordinated geek. And, she like to throw the controller. Maybe I'll be getting a crash helmet.

Maybe I'll be getting a crash helmet.I have a tendency to swing my arms left, right, or up in response to what I am trying to do. My wife twitches her legs when sh "jumps". We now sit on separate couches while playing so we don't injure each other :D

PixelJunk Eden is great as both single player and co-op experience.
Flower is single player, but it is just about as relaxing to watch as it is to play.
Buzz is also a great multiplayer game. It's definitely more fun with 4 than with 2, but my wife and I still have a lot of fun playing by ourselves.

My Wii doesn't play DVDs, XviD, or DivX. Of course, I haven't powered it on for many months. Was there a firmware update I wasn't aware of?

I don't know if the Wii can stream these file formats. And, what's the point if you don't get HD anyway.
It doesn't make much sense to suggest to a fellow who bought the PS3 primarily as a Blue-ray player that he get a Wii instead. Sounds like Fan-Kid logic.

Like others have said, definitely try out the PixelJunk games.
flOw is a great co-op experience for the non-hardcore gamer. Fun six-axis controls, to boot.

Does anyone know if they plan on bringing Peggle to the PS3? It just came out on xbox live and that is a hell of a game to play with the wife.

Homebrew channel.
And it's time to turn it back on with House of the dead overkill(even has Co-op) You still should try Okami and Madworld and can't remember if you said you played No more heroes but it's also worth it....de blob is another.
World of Goo on Wiiware is another gem.
2009 is really shaping up.

@Charlie,not on PS3 but on DS,PC and XBL there is Peggle

Did anyone suggest Boom Blox? I still have yet to get this game, but definitely want to. I was a huge fan of Spielberg's animated shows so if he can do the same for video games I'm up for trying.

My Wii is a giant dust magnet. My wife uses it couple times a week for Wii-fit. But, I can tell she'd rather be playing Fallout or Fable 2. I got it for my 5-year old daughter and she can't figure out the Wii-mote. However, she's a master with both the XBOX 360 controller and the sixaxis. The motion control on the six-axis is no problem. Emily likes the XBOX 360 and PS3 games more than the Wii games. Watching her play "Flower" is a sheer delight.
The main issue with out Wii is that with a PS3 and an XBOX 360 in the same house, the Wii loses in the fun department. Sure, Wii bowling is fun. We have a great time. But, 30-minutes into Wii bowling we're booting up the XBOX or the PS3 for something a little more hardcore. And, we are not hard core gamers.
Anti-Wii? No way. I bought the thing and plan to keep it. But, side-by-side with the other consoles in my house, the Wii loses more than it wins.

No, I don't think anyone suggested Boom Blox because it's not on the PS3, which is what the OP was asking for.
So, back on topic - Noby Noby Boy is getting an offline multiplayer patch soon. Not sure when, exactly, but I'm sure she'll LOVE it. lol
EDIT: Also, I'm sure that all three of the rumored LEGO titles (Harry Potter, Indy 2, and The Hobbit) will all be on PS3 and support co-op.

My bad. I guess I'm used to owning every system figured other people would own more then one. Also, the other Wii games mentioned in the thread was another reason in my mentioning of it.
The new Party mode from Burnout Paradise sounded interesting. Kind of like HORSE with cars or something. Mortal Kombat was always a favorite of mine for simple fighter and easier to get into the Street Fighter, but I enjoy SF as well. Resident Evil 5 seems made for co-op and probably easier having a human play that you can come up w/ strategies.
I guess as I've gotten older I play less and less multi-player in general. It seems a lot of games aren't friendly to multi-player on one television. I'm sure there are, but sometimes you need a whole TV to see what's going on. I'm a fan of the old school video games like Mario Bros., TMNT (older ones), and such. To me it seems co-op fell behind and became more competitive. If you want some fun co-op that isn't FPS get a Wii and download some classics. That's my suggestion and it seems to be a hit at parties since it's easy to pick up and play.
Edit: @Masterscf I do gotta agree with you there that I really enjoy my 360 & PS3 games more. But as a system to pull out for a group of friends and goof around in the Wii seems best. I don't see many games like Smash or Kart on other systems that is as fun. Just awhile ago we had a drinking game for Mario Kart that was hard & fun. May not be for everyone, but still was fun. Smash Bros. is still a fun game to have with people familiar with it. My cousin still compete to see who is better. My biggest gripe w/ the system is the low number of 1st party games and abundance of 3rd party that can seem like shovelware. I'd like to try some of the Mario Sports games as well because I enjoyed Soccer on Gamecube and the tennis games. The saddest part as well is my favorite games for the system I use a gamecube remote to play them with.
