I am a video n00b...and I just got Final Cut Pro and an HD Camcorder.

Am trying to export my movies that have been successfully captured, to .avi using xvid codec.

Essentially I would like to be able to get the same quality and size of the movies that Rev3 puts out for xvid avi's.

Anyone care to shed a little light on the settings, etc?

Thanks.

wish I could help you out, but its been awhile since i've used FCP.

I went through A LOT of trial and error with encoding settings to get the ones that looked the best.... try different settings and export a small (20-30 sec to save encode time) sample to see how it will turn out and go from there...

...hopefully someone else can chime in later to give you some more specific advice

-Choose File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion.
-Choose a location and enter a name for the file.
-Choose AVI from the Format pop-up menu.
-Choose a setting from the Use menu.

I don't think FCP out of the box supports xvid codecs. We use mencoder for our xvid.avi encoding.

You might be able to install the codecs and export using QuickTime Pro if FCP cannot do it.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I have tried doing some samples, dirtyhat, like you suggested and there are a TON of settings :(

I got the best quality I want, but a 2.0GB file for a 3 min video - even @ 1080p isn't quite ideal.

Chuckles, so does that mean you initially export from FCP to some file (say .mov) and then use mencoder for your xvid .avi files?

If so, what are the initial settings for that first .mov export, and how big is the typical file size, say for a diggnation episode before it gets to xvid .avi. I know that the final size varies from about 450MB - 700MB. That is the perfect ratio I am looking for. i.e. about 1mb/30 secs -I believe that's what it works out to be, no?

Daikun, thnx for the suggestions. I am going to try out those shortly.

Chuckles,
That Divx Component is the first thing I tried, QTPro isn't cooperating with me. It keeps crashing, and trying to output anything in FCP to divx, gives me a .divx file. Not a .xvid.avi file - which is what I want.

Re: mencoder chuckles,
Do you use a GUI or command-line? Which proggy is that? I am running OS X. I think I have the source file quality down pat, just trying to figure out how to convert from the source .mov to the .xvid.avi much smaller, but similar quality.

Thanks again.

Would love to compress my current 3min - 2GB .mov file, down to a nice <50mb 3min file, or somewhere there about. Similar quality, just much smaller xvid .avi.
