View Full Version : Improving Diggnation (SUGGESTIONS)

So, instead of just looking back to the good ol' days of Diggnation and sighing at how much it sucks these days (it does not, if you ask me), how about we post some actual ideas on how to make the show BETTER.

---------------------
SUGGESTIONS (I will keep this post updated)
1. Be more selective when choosing the stories. Choose the stories you personally are passionate about, not just the most popular ones.
2. More guest hosts (Hippy, Jaya Delson, etc.).
2a. A proper mic for Hippy. The guy has obviously a lot of interesting things to say.
3. Skip a week if you don't feel like making a show. Quantity over quality.
4. More live shows.
---------------------

Step 1: Let's brainstorm. From more drinking to more guests to less tea, let's put our heads together.

Step 2: (this is the important one.) Since neither Kevin nor Alex actually visits this forum, I think we should, after coming up with some solid suggestions, let them know as well. Sending them an e-mail is pretty much like playing the lottery, but we could still try (for example, if we all send the same e-mail with the same headline, they are bound to notice). A much better way would be to, of course, use twitter. Kevin is on twitter pretty much 24/7 and if about 30 people send the same thing, he cannot really ignore it. We will not give up until they address these issues on the show.

I agree with these suggestions. Guest hosts or more guests in general are a great idea. Not every episode mind you, but one episode per month for example would be awesome. Also (if budget permits) more live shows. I LOVE those. Always great energy. :D

I think that doing the show only once per month would help. It would guarntee a richer selection of content and a thirstier audience. I know it wouldn't be popular at first but people would adjust =p

If you've ever watched talk shows, especially late night talk shows, you know that there are going to be really hilarious shows and some that are hit and miss. Diggnation doing their shows every week is how it should stay because if you change it to every month things wouldn't be as new or fresh and people would start losing interest.

I do think they should take a break some times like almost every talk show does and just fill it in during the off time with maybe the best moments of diggnation and that kind of stuff. I'd also love to some day see them having the same laid back format but have an actual set for the show that guests can come on.

Whenever hippie says something on Diggnation I think of the teacher from Charlie Brown.

I think it's fine the way it is. I look forward to every episode.

Martin Sargent would be a really cool guest. He's really funny and i had a blast watching him and kevin on the digg reel.

Gotta love how the ones who bitch how Diggnation is "falling apart" aren't here giving advice. Also, I can't edit the first post any more?

Like I said in another thread, using SEGUES would help the show in its fluidity.

I don't disagree, but it will take more than that to salvage a show that the hosts seem burnt out on.

I've watched for some time now, my friend got me into it about a year ago.

Personally I do not see the episodes as getting worse, it's a fun way for me to take in a lot of information, I learn a lot watching the show and have fun watching Alex & Kevin goofing off.

I do think them hand picking one story that they are passionate about each episode, amongst the top dugg stories would be a good transition.

However think about what digg is, it puts the power to the people. They are trying to keep that course in diggnation, 100% Selection would go against their mission.

I do enjoy when they drink, but I don't hate it when they're sober, I think the alcohol consumption is one of the things that makes the show funny, but even when they are not drunk, I enjoy hearing the stories, and also their input.

I would enjoy hearing a bit more about what they're doing other than the passing comments, I don't know about Alex, but Kevin seems to always be working on something, some concept, etc. It would be cool to hear about the things he's working on for 3 or 4 minutes during the show, and Alex as well if he's up to it.

Regardless, I love the show, and I wouldn't want anyone else sitting on that couch other than them, they both do an amazing job.

Maybe rotate hosts to decrease the burnout factor for Alex and Kevin. If for instance, Martin Sargent and Sarah Lane would host two shows a month, it would still provide an entertaining show for us, and allow Kevin and Alex to have more fun with it again. If they continued shooting two episodes at a time and did half in LA and half in SF, that would only be 6 trips a year for each of them.

Not a horrible idea, but as I said, I can't imagine anyone else on that couch other than them, guest hosts is one thing, but if they were not in an episode, I don't think I'd enjoy it as much..

Maybe it's us, not them? Maybe our expectations have changed?

More guest hosts, and come to Europe once a year.

You don't know until you've tried having other hosts, and eventually Kevin or Alex (or both) will call it a day, it'll be nice to have a Plan B rather than stopping the show all together. I think having occasionally another 'team' would breathe fresh life into it. Martin and Sarah are obvious choices, their This Week in Fun is almost like a more formal Diggnation.

They didn't need to anything drastic like changing hosts, by making the episodes longer (By talking about more stories for instance), by stopping plugging everything from sponsors to twitter every two seconds, and having fun instead of having the "Lets just get through this asap" attitude, the show could get back it's unbeatable greatness. And I think filming shows 2 at once is a complete cop out, the second show is never as good, the length has to be short, and they have to use weaker stories, that once aired, are stale and out-of-date.

I dont know about everyone else but I dont like how they changed the format to include sponsors before their last story.

Also, too much twitter plugging needs to stop, maybe throw in one or two more stories if they find some really good ones, make sure the stories are going to spark a lot of good/funny discussion between them - I hate it when they read the story and then just basically go "yeah thats really cool of random company, next story", more beer episodes or at least episodes where there more loose, I think kevin was IMing during an episode a little bit back thats kind of saying to us that hes bored and just doing diggnation to get it out of the way. I really hope they arent just doing it to do it now, I still see the fun when its a live show but the show seems dead especially when its a not very interesting or funny 25/35 min long show where sponsors/twitter plugging takes up 7 mins.
