it's not gel, it's pomade and it's commonly used to give a natural look yet hold well.

I would recommend watching the most recent episode of TRS as Alex mentions the specific product that he uses during the viewer email segment at the end.

Question: why do people make fun of users for asking what product one of the hosts uses? It's not like it's necessarily a stalker thing. If I see someone uses a product that seems to work very well, why shouldn't I be able to ask what they use without ridicule? It's gotten to be that the internet is trying to be so "counter culture" or something that we can't ask for a decent product just because a mild celebrity uses it.
I can kind of understand getting annoyed because the question was answered....two years ago, but outright mocking the question? Why?

Because it shows a complete inability to make your own decisions and associate with your own identity.

If you see something that you think looks good that you might want to try out, then not asking shows antisocial tendencies. Associating with your identity is one thing, but seeing a hair gel (or pomade, or whatever) which seems to work well that you think would look good, and wanting to know which one it is is quite normal.

Aren't all gels basically the same?

No, if he bought it because it was Alex's then yes, but he wanted to know because he thought it worked well. Next you'll say I can't own a Dell because Alex has one, or I can't go on the Rev3 forums because tons of other users use it?

First off, even girls don't ask so often what product someone uses. Why? Because we know that what works well on one person may work terrible with out particular hair or skin. So we make our own choices. We don't often even ask where someone got an article of clothing we got unless we're doing do in a complimentary way. We sure aren't going to run out and buy it the way the askers of these questions are.
Second, questions like this happen a LOT. After a while it does get to be creepy.
Third, there really is very little difference between most gels.
Fourth, the rate at which these questions are asked get creepy after a while. Where a couch was bought, where their shoes and shirts come from, their hygiene and grooming products...it's really creepy. See reason #2 again.

If you want to buy a Dell because you like them and Ale happens to use one too (I'm personally on my second Dell, this one flamingo pink), then fine. But if you want a Dell BECAUSE Alex uses one, then you're going to get the same sort of replies.
With hair, different people have hair that is very different. That is why there are as many shampoos as there are. Alex's gel works fine for him. For someone else, it may work like crap. But $10 says that person will still use it because it's what Alex uses.

You don't get it. It's not because Alex has a Dell that you can't have one, or that others use Rev3 that you can't, it's because you couldn't make the decision to do said things, by yourself.
You, and y'all that don't get ( i.e, numerous freaks posting these theads in the first place ), need to realise the issue of abnormality, that you are displaying, and a) think of the deepr issue at hand the results in you 'wanting' to have your opinion created for you, and b) shhhhhh.

I'm pretty impressed by: D:fi's d:struct molding creme. It can do pretty much anything, and leaves a Matte finish (doesn't look like gel\glossy), which is similar to Alex's
About 13 bucks for 2.6 oz

There's a difference between seeing Alex with a Dell (for example) and saying "that looks like a good product, I'll have to check it out" (obviously I won't rush out and drop 2 grand on it, but it might mean I'll look at reviews or check out the floor models at an electronics store" and saying "Alex has one, must buy".
This person was saying "the gel that Alex uses looks like it works well, I'll have to try it" not "I want it so I can look like Alex". Since hair gel is MUCH cheaper, a person can buy some and try it to see if it works. Should he have remained silent and just tried random shit he knows nothing about rather than ask what product someone uses because it works? If you know nothing about hair gel, would it not make sense to ask a person who obviously has some experience in hair gel what they prefer?
And, technically speaking, it's not abnormal to wonder what products people use. Aria's analogy doesn't work, since he's not asking random people on the street, he's asking what a (admittedly Z-list) celebrity is using. It's no different than every single girl reading US weekly and such.
Also, being a guy, it's likely he's not familiar with products such as hair gel, so he didn't know they are all essentially the same.

I get it and I have my own opinions. I don't base my personal hair style, or how I dress after others, but if I see something that I like, I'll try to find out what it is. If I have limited knowledge of a certain product, I'll ask someone who knows a lot more than me. I don't see what I have to learn everything "the hard way" or through trial and error, if someone else has already done that. Does that mean people shouldn't write to Tekzilla asking Patrick and Veronica opinions on electronics? Does that make them sheeple because they couldn't decide on a TV or piece of software themself?

I use something I get off a homeless guy that calls the dumpster behind my work his "office". He calls the paste "Uncle Ted's Man Goo". He distributes it in Dixie cup. Not sure who Uncle Ted is, but it seems to do the trick.

If we have to put up with the same type of questions time and again, we're going to start having fun with them so help cut down on being so annoyed.
