View Full Version : Episode 104 - GDC 2009 Special [Discussion]
One may ask oneself if it is indeed possible to wrap up an entire weeks worth of game announcements and industry news in one, approximately half-hour show. It ain't easy. Fortunately we had the help of X-Play's Adam Sessler, The Totally Rad Show's Jeff Cannata, WhatTheyPlay's John Davison, formerly MTV's Patrick Klepek, and GameSpy's Will Tuttle and Sterling McGarvey. In a discussion literally of the round-table variety they all join us to boil down GDC into a delicious, spicy reduction sauce of what's important to all of us as gamers. Contained within:
Infamous, the OnLive announcements, Fat Princess, PixelJunk Eden: Encore, Punch Out!!, ExciteBots, The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, and wrap-ups on the notable moments of the Keynotes, the GDC award ceremonies and a shout-out to some Independent Games Festival favorites.

I think that this show might save gaming. I absolutely loved it, and I seriously think we can change the way people think about gaming when they see the critical analysis and complex ideas associated to market ideals, how shallow gaming has become, and how communal and nearly spiritual gaming is when we get smart people talking about it. I'm absolutely impressed, and you guys have completely stepped up your game on the lighting and camera work. This is my new favorite Rev3 show, and if you review my post history: I'm kind of an asshole when it comes to reviews. It takes a powerful, impressive show to make me clap in an empty house. Well done. Give me more.

Love it. This show is just going from strength to strength and its only the 4th (of CO-OP) episode, John Davison and Jeff Cannata are great, was cool that you had Adam Sessler on as well.

WOW!
This episode is amazing. This episode really highlights where the industry is today and where I would love to see it go in the next few years. I won't steal anyone's words from the episode but this is a must see for anyone interested in the industry.
Keep it up! I can't wait for next weeks coverage on the Independent Games Festival.

Best episode yet.
Great Guest hosts and Great coverage. Really loved seeing everyones little imput over the "tiny" stuff and not the big guys.
Even just the little bit they covered on the new zelda. it was a fine mix of everything but at the same time the little stuff shined more so IMO.

Am really liking this show. Great episode, it really dug into a few games some people (or just me) would probably not have paid much attention to (except Zelda, perhaps), and gave some nice views on them. The only negative comment I could have for it is that it incites me to want to get more games, which I currently do not have the money for.

Great episode. Fantastic that you're able to cover the things that interest you now, because this show is at its best when you guys are talking about things you care about.
Loving all the guests you've had on CO-OP so far, all enthusiastic and knowledgeable and interesting. I want to see them ALL again :)

This is the first episode of COOP I've checked out. I actually decided to check it out after Jeff from TRS said he guest spotted on the show. So far I'm actually really digging (this is coming from a guy that likes games, but don't really feel like I'm officially a gamer per se). The editing is great. Hopefully the future episodes I watch have this same quality as this round table. Good show though. :)

Thanks to you and everyone for watching! We will always try to cover the most interesting stuff happening in games, no matter how big or small. Next week, we'll be talking about a bunch of the games from the 2009 IGF pavilion. There was a lot of incredible stuff there this year.

Thanks for watching! I'm always curious to hear about how people who don't play games much feel about the show. We do definitely cater to the hardcore gaming audience by talking about the minutiae of these games, but I always hope that we do so in an inviting way.

I think that if you're not a hard-core gamer, watching CO-OP will make you one. I think that watching Co-op like 1-Up before that is a gateway drug of sorts.

So I pretty much love this show. Should I hang up my drink hat and do games?
EDIT:

I never watched these guys over at 1up -(Primarily just because I didn't know they existed)
But man, GREAT SHOW gents - this is definitely a niche that's been filled in video gaming journalism. So many shows try to pander to the lowest common denominator insofar as the discussions they have and the things they choose to talk about. This show however is a very measured, intellectual approach to videogames.
LOVE IT!!
Keep up the good work. Love the camera work and production as well (Though I suppose they're one in the same...)

Thanks guys for all the kind words!
GDC was a lot of fun this year for us. Previously, events like GDC were a blur of appointments, interviews, and demos; we never really got the chance to soak in the show, we were always moving from one thing to another.
Because I could sit down and enjoy entire sessions, panels, and keynotes without the burden of live streaming or trying to get direct-feed footage of every little thing on the show, I feel like I actually learned a lot last week. That's the whole point of GDC, right?
I think that if you're not a hard-core gamer, watching CO-OP will make you one. I think that watching Co-op like 1-Up before that is a gateway drug of sorts.
Interesting thought, and accurate to a degree. I was listening to the show while working and thinking "damn, I'd love to dive into a game like that and really study it inside and out again." But, alas.

Fucking Great episode. Very cool to see Adam Sessler during the roundtable stuff. I'm a co-op noob, started watching since the move to rev3 and I gotta say you guys have done an awesome job with these first 4 episodes. I've also started watching older episodes on the area 5 site, great stuff.

You know, I've never thought about it that way! I'm glad that our audience sees us as hardcore enough to be a legit source for critical game discussion, and also approachable enough to not turn more casual gamers away. I hope we can make both laugh.

Definetly the show at its best, I liked that the discussion was a bit more freeform as it was about an event rather than a specific game, I look forward to these types of shows for the big trade shows and stuff.

Seeing this episode really reminded me of the great things you all did on the 1UP Show, combining a great panel and creating a great discussion about great games. While I loved the previous episodes, this one truly is one of my favorites. Also, special props should be given to the editing. The picture in picture, Ang Lee style scenes are really well done. The show moves quite fluidly from speaker, to gameplay, and back to speaker, presenting the optimal viewing experience. It seems these scenes are meticulously thought out and beyond anything on Rev3. Not to knock the funny editing on TRS or even Diggnation, but Co Op is playing in an entirely different league. Awesome job and I can't wait for the next episode.

This last episode was awesome guys as the round table discussion format was perfect. Glad to see the high level of production quality and full on gaming content. Oh, I just wanted to say that I think Prototype is more well suited for being the next Crackdown type fix, especially after seeing this top 10 reasons trailer on Gametrailers.com - http://www.gametrailers.com/player/47312.html. Of course Infamous still looks pretty cool as well.
Keep up the great work guys!

I seriously hope one of the guys from COOP reads this. I have only watched COOP since you guys came to Rev3, but I'm completely hooked. Seriously, this show is right next to LOST on my excitement bar for new episodes. Loved the round table and I love the normal show too... Keep up the great work.

I love that they poke fun at themselves and the original comment (http://revision3.com/forum/showpost.php?p=502645&postcount=11) where Jay Fresh (http://www.familyofpets.net/) was "reading" the ad (even though its Matt reading).
Great show as always, been watching since the beginning at 1UP. To say you guys have changed a lot (for mostly better) would be an understatement.

@BSG ... thank you for the warm fuzzies! It means a lot to us that people are digging the show so much (no pun intended). Our intent with the show is to chance the way people think and talk about games in the media by simply showing the way that gamers actually talk about games when they're amongst their peers. It's not rocket science, but I guess not too many people out there are doing that :)

Haha, if that's the case, then I think we might be on the right track. I'd love to think that our show can bring more people into a deeper love of gaming!

It does take a lot of time, and I think that's a primary obstacle to a lot of adult gamers. Fortunately we're seeing a trend toward games being more manageable in terms of time spent playing while being more densely packed with content. A trend I applaud :)

@webnet ... thank you thank you! And yeah, I think that's a real benefit to the way Revision3 does it's thing in that it allows all these different formats to exist in one place so there's a little something for everyone. I'm glad to see we're keeping up with expectations!

Did you seriously just put us in the same sentence as LOST?! Okay this comment is going down as a sticky on my calendar so that I can give it a birthday and celebrate it annually! ;)

Well, not to lessen what I said. To be fair, Lost and Co-Op are two very different shows, but my excitement level is the same. Co-Op really is just like I'm sitting around with friends talking about a game. It's really great, and I seriously hope you guys keep up the momentum as time goes on.
