I hooked up and external hard drive to my imac to run time machine. Now my imac will freeze up at times when the hd is attached. The only wat to get it to reboot is to remove the external hd. Anyone have the same problem?

Check the external for disk surface errors. The OS might be hanging trying to do some thing with the disk, and the disk is struggling.
