Where is the best place to buy a Linux laptop? (I don't want to pay the MS tax)

I would like it to be cheap, light and a long battery life.

Try Dell Inspiron (http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/inspn?~ck=anav) series.

From what I understand there are a few Linux OEM's. One example is http://www.system76.com/.

Check out the comments in the Digg below. Down at the bottom (most recent) a user lists several OEMs.

See Digg post here. (http://www.digg.com/linux_unix/Linux_and_its_closing_window_of_opportunity_with_O EMs)

Yeah, if you want to be as cheap as possible but still have a decent laptop, Dell is the way to go.

I HATE Toshiba laptops. The last one I played around with was a satellite, and for the price it was slow and ugly as sin.

Can you chage your name to Mr.F@#king Obvious by chance?!Sure I *could* do that. Will it stop you asking F@#king Obvious questions?

And, as I said, the cheapest laptop you'll find with any sort of support for Linux will be a Dell. Bird likes theTecra, but you wont find one as cheap as the Dell.

Don't asking stupid questions if you aren't going to read the answers.

Still a toshiba so you missed his point.

Thought those were desktop's only?

And didnt someone just win a court case after suing dell saying they wanted linux and not XP.. and then they got a $100 rebate?

Wow I don't think my question says anywhere *can* you install *Linux* on a laptop.
It was, *where* is the best place to *buy* a laptop for use with Linux.

Also no one wants to buy a dell....I mean come on.....

Also no one wants to buy a dell....I mean come on.....You wanted cheap. Dell is as cheap as I'd go - their desktops blow, but the thing about laptops is that there are only really three places (companies) that make them, and everyone OEMs their models from their - so quality is all much of a muchness in terms of build, but the quality of the components that go in can vary.

I want to say that both Dell and Apple Macbooks are made by Flextronics - but could be wrong on that.

I remember reading somewhere that you can phone order a Dell without the OS and get a reduction on your price.

Personally I like HP Laptops - not the consumer models, but the business ones. They are bomb proof and can take some abuse (I travel, my nc6230 take a pounding when I am on the road).

Asus and Acer make some decent budget machines, and dont discount Gateways laptops either. Each of these are pretty much clones of each other.

Check newegg.com for the best price.

Yes, you did say Tecra, which is why I specifically wrote the one I didn't like was a Satellite, because I have never used a Tecra and wasn't going to say ALL Toshibas suck when I haven't used them all.

well i can say that my tecra M3 (2.13ghz pentium M 2 gigs of ram interwireless and bluetooth) work on linux almost flawlessly. the only thing you have to do is patch the kernel for tohiba bluetooth and change the kernel option from ide to sata. but i never tried the modem or ir
