I already posted a thread like this around the beginning asking about this and testing what words we could and couldn't say and it was taken down without any notice at all...beware the mods...
.i think it's just something we'll have to get used to, which is lame, but the mods are getting a lot of hate in these forums and i don't think that's a good kind of relationship to have with them at the start. i say i hate that they're here, but they're human too...i think...so i know you're just doin your job, mod, if you're reading this, just know that it'll probably take a while till people get used to you.
but yeah, fucck the censorship. ah well, whatcha gonna do.

Threads like this are the reason modded forums suck. People will always feel the need to push buttons and see how far they can go instead of accepting that Rev3 doesn't want cursing or offensive material on their forums. It's an issue we haven't needed to deal with before and I suggest everybody pissed off get over it because it's really not a big deal at all, and there's nothing you can do about it. Don't bother them and they won't bother us.

We've been discussing the same thing... the "they swear on the shows, why not in the forums?" My personal opinion is that I don't like censorship when censorship isn't necessary, and based on the old forums I never thought the censorship was necessary. Hell. I swear. All the time.
But...
Who knows. It's something that has been brought up, and is being discussed. We'll see what happens. I'll just say this... think of stand up comedy. In stand up there are two takes on swearing. There are the comics that rely on the shock factor of profanity to boost their otherwise weak acts, and then there are good comics who swear just to express a point.
I think that when all you do is use profanity for the shock value of it, it detracts from the forum and can lead to trouble. But we're all pretty chill here, so when someone curses in just the normal flow of things, there should be no need to censor.
Time will tell. It's not my decision alone...

Censorship is never OK. Never. It's not like I want to curse in every thread, but when I say something, I don't want my words filtered. When I say fuck, I don't want it to be blocked.
Because it starts with fuck and bitch, and then it will eventually turn into filters for other things. Things like political statements, and free speech.
Someone should really turn off the filter, because it's not going to work, it's just going to get in the way and piss people off.

Personally, I do not swear, and I don't like it. I don't see any reason for it at all, where does using profanity come into discussing the content of this website? If a bunch of twelve year olds were allowed to fill the forum with cursing and ignorant language, then what sort of image would that be sending to the world. I doubt that the founders of this site had the intention of letting anarchy reign supreme allowing members to insult each other, and use sexual/homosexual comment in a derogatory manner. What use is it to question what is and is not allowed on a website that is not owned by you? Deal with it. Enjoy the content. Discuss the shows in such a way that civilized people would not be offended and leave without joining and contributing to things.
I don't think that moderating has to be dirty, but when people push buttons and test boundarys then the consequences should be accepted. Just have fun and enjoy yourselves, respect each other, it truly is that simple.

First of all, you obviously weren't on the Geekdrome forums before this relaunch. Second of all, I completely agree that profanity is often not necessary, and it really is a FACT that when you are using profanity, you are often neglecting a better word for that certain "profane" word that you are using. BUT...the point of these forums is to be a community of people that are fans of rev3 and their shows, andn in order to be a true fan you have to express yourself as you regularly would, with as much enthusiasm, excitement, intelligence, and passion as you would were you there talking face to face.
We did this in the old geekdrome forums very well and nobody was ever alienated or insulted in a fashion that they did not recover from or that was not immediately addressed by the overall community itself.
Assuming that the populus of this online community can't do that on their own is ridiculous and, frankly, insulting. Which is part of the problem I have with the censoring. Now, I'm not going to swear every time I post but I will when the occassion is called for, because we are not in an office and we do not work together, this is not a professional forum, it is about escaping that reality, it is about the very things we use to escape the formalities of life like work, careers, etc.
The very things we use to escape such formal environments are discussed in this forum: comics, movies, video games, television shows, music, and anything else that distracts us from being drones to the everyday of life. In that respect, any censorship at all is absolutely irrelevant to the geekdrome forums. Maybe censorship belongs in your diggnation talks, or your technical talks within those forums(which very well might be between professionals) and we have very intelligent conversations here, as well. The point is, though, that the conversations do not need to be professional in The Drome; they need to be passionate.
Any censorship hinders this passion/expression in a way that assumes the worst of the people of this community and controls it with the guidelines that would fit only the lowest of the posters. This is why it is frowned upon here, and this is why it has no place within the walls of the Geekdrome forum.
That's just my opinion. Love, Brian Gilmore.

I loved the fact that these forums weren't just censor free, they were moderator free. I don't think I ever saw a need for one, it's been great. I'm sure at some point some idiot will show up and make it a requirement, but I'm happy the way this place is right now. As for the need for a profanity free forum... I really hope that not only do the shows not lose their edge, but neither do the forums.

Have you even seen an episode of Geekdrome? The show is just two guys having conversations; conversations that more often than not include vulgar, offensive, immature, and uncivilized behavior. The forums served as an extention of those conversations and were in a sense part of the show. People watching the podcast aren't going to be offended by the content in the forums. That being said the scenerio you described with sunshine lollipops and rainbows everywhere is the thing that's out of place here, not the F word.

Were discussing the rules in the moderator forum as of now and one of the common issues that is being brought up is profanity on the forums. It looks like we all don't mind if it is on the forums, in fact it only makes sense to allow it due to more "adult" shows (like Infected for example). Of course the profanity shouldn't be taken too far as well.
I made the suggestion that we allow profanity but base it on a moderators discretion. I don't think its a big deal if somebody uses profanity but it shouldnt be used as if your a 7th grader saying the f-word after every other word.
Ps. If you guys are this worried about censorship on a WEB FORUM then why not apply it to some real life censorship going on in the REAL WORLD? :P (that was a joke, don't flip out)
If you're discussing things at this time I have a suggestion. Completely ignore this part of the forums, if you're not a fan of the show don't post here lecturing us for liking it's content and creating our own. I do feel there are times when a mod will be needed and if an issue arises we all know how to contact you guys. Otherwise I think the majority of dedicated fans here prefer that you stay silent unless you're contributing to or creating your own topics as our peers.

If you guys are confident that you are a self moderated forum then you should have no worries. The mod wont get in your way and will simply contribute to the content on the forums with you.
Again, were not out to get you guys. Most of the mods here are from Scopetech.net, check out the forums there and ask any member what they they think about us. Im willing to bet that almost everyone of them will agree that we are great mods (Scopetech is a small community but its very close knit).
Geekdrome having the most active community on the Rev3 forums has zero representation outside of the occasional postings of a bovine god. Remedy that and the lynch mob might put out their torches.

Thank you for saving me some typing. People need to chill and just enjoy these new and improved but imperfect forums. I believe that things will work themselves out. I'm not worried about the mods, because I haven't had bad experiences on other forums. I consider them one of us...one of us, one of us, one of us...instead of "big brother". This is the exact reason the geekdrome forums want their own mod for this section of the forums, one who knows the folks here and thinks like we do. You've obviously never seen an episode of geekdrome before, because one of the co-hosts Dan Tractenburg says f u c k every other line, you could seriously put up a counter with the amount of time he says it. This is one of the things we love about the show, that there is no censorship to the show and we expect the forums to be a natural extension of that. The hosts constantly refer to the show as an extension of the community that lies on the forums, and if we can't speak with the same passion and to the same manner as the hosts of the show, you're only going to alienate the core community further and drive alot of folks away. We're not saying we want to curse in every post we make, but we want the option if we so choose it. I'm sure all of you scopetech guys are great, but the thing is we're already a thriving community and we just want our own just representation if the moderator thing is here to stay.
And if you notice, i only cursed one in that entire paragraph. We're putting our opinions out there, and the best we're met with it "sunshine lollipops". A discourse about this topic would be nice so that we're not just talking to ourselves here followed by a snarky comment by the mods.

Which, as I pointed out repeatedly in IRC, FIRST you launch the website and get it working THEN you throw the party that brings new people here in droves. Yeah, my bad... I had forgotten that "shit" was always allowed through. Odd that you can say "****ing" on an episode of Family Guy (?) now but it's not permissible in print.
My only other problem with asterisk filters is that they catch stupid, non-swearing bits... like Dick Cheney jokes or sayings like "*****-footing around". One board I attend even goes so far as to substitute swear words with the phrase "potty-mouth". So it came out on my post as "potty-mouth-footing around" That was hilarious, but sad.

1. Moderators
Yes there are moderators. I am one of them.
We are respecting the "culture" of each of the forums that has been established. We are not going to come in here and tell you to put away your toys, clean your rooms, wash your hands and come down for dinner. We are not your parents. We are people like you. We live here as well.
Will there be a moderator picked from the Dromies? Absolutely some of you have put forward names of people you want. Expect an announcement soon.
Until then - ask yourself ... OK, there are mods, but have they been interferring with you guys doing what you normally do? I don't think so ... and if there have been issues, take it up in PM directly with the mod or one of the other mods.
2. Profanity Filter
I am an Aussie. I use **** shit wanker prick and asshole all the time. I choose when and where I do it though. In this forum - yeah, its appropriate for the profanity filter to be removed if it can be done on a per forum basis. I agree with your arguements - if they swear on the show, then you should be able to swear in the forum. Perhaps we need to add an "explict" tag to the forum header to warn newbs, but so be it.
The profanity filter is a default setting. To be honest, if it can be turned off in here (and Infected, perhaps theBroken too) then that's appropriate for these forums. It might not be appropriate in other areas of the board though.
===
Basically, you guys are self moderating. It will stay that way - we WONT be tolerating racial slurs, and will probably throw a bucket of water on flame fests that go on too long, and might close threads that could be termed "illegal". But thats about it.
The forums are about you. They are not about the mods. They are not about swearing for the sake of swearing.
Go at it, and enjoy yourselves.

1. Moderators
Yes there are moderators. I am one of them.
The forums are about you. They are not about the mods. They are not about swearing for the sake of swearing.
Go at it, and enjoy yourselves.
Thank you. Personally I totally agree with everything you've said here, although I may from time to time make fun of those humps from Alpha Centauri... they've always bugged me with that one single beady eye in the center of their heads.

yeah, that'll be an interesting one... I mean I don't believe TC is racist, but he certainly pushes the envelope on humor.

I hate those ****ing one-eyed Centaurians, the whole bunch of 'em... 50 of them fly around in their tiny ships, they're lazy pot smoking thieves, they take jobs from american astronauts, and I can't understand a damn word they telepathically send to me. Go back to space you green backs!

Go back to space you green backs! You forgot to mention the clapped out rust buckets they fly around in ... FFS - even titanium alloys need some panel beating sometimes, and you can only use so much duct tape to hold the coffee can over the exhaust manifold ... and don't get me started about loosening the ventriculator heads to let more ion flow in to make the gravimetric convertor have a meatier sound.
And what is it with the sub meson speaker boxes? You can hear a Centauran coming from 10 parsecs. Mother frakers ...

Can racial slurs still be directed at hosts?
Because I don't think I want to live in a forum that doesn't allow me to crack a Home Depot and JLo joke

having censorship in the forums is depressing... i mean, i wasnt one who used "bad" words that often in the old forums, but still... the shows are explicit... why do the forums have to be censored?

No, no. I should be more understanding since I remember the way guys in the forum have fallen over women in the past. *looks at old buxomia fan club threads*

{diva and iggy high five each other as we envision token as a Hugh Jackman look-alike whispering sweet nothings in our ears...iggy only on the weekends though}Bah - Jackman?? I got a haircut last weekend - before then I had the whole Wolverine thing happening. Now its back to almost military short back and sides.
Also, I am taller, and my accent is more Crowe than Jackman ... and gets stronger with more alcohol.
BUT anyway ... if there are any ladies that want to be submissive around me ... I am fine with that :)
