View Full Version : A word on comics fans

So I've been reading comics for almost exactly a year now. I love comics. But...
Can someone tell me what's with some comics fans? Geez, you'd think a writer crapped on their face sometimes. I know of one fan who quite literally cyber stalks a writer to trash her at every mention of her name. What the hell? Do they not know these comics creators are persons?
I can see taking aim at big names. They're big and a moron or two venting their frustrations won't make a lick of difference. But in other cases, you might be seriously undermining another person's career efforts. What's the deal man?
I've been reading Dale Carnegie and have this sort of thing on the mind lately.
That is all.

Thankfully, TNC is about as bad as we got.
That's pretty good.

I just don't get the people who take it so personally when they don't like something that happens in a book. What this writer is doing is not to your liking? It's not your taste? Right on, no worries, just move along and find something else. To get so angry about works of fiction is utterly perplexing to me. Not liking a story is one thing. Discussing WHY you don't like that story is fantastic. Taking a story you dislike personally to the point where you are vehemently angry at a writer is absurd. Just move along, sir. Move along. Or write your own stories. The writer in question just wrote a story you disliked. They didn't punch your mom in the face.

Yeah, that's my opinion.

Mark Waid something earlier this year that I totally agree with. It was in regards to all the hate Morrison was getting about Final Crisis:
"I'm cranky about it on Grant's behalf, because I generally believe that hate and vitriol should be reserved for people who deliberately try to do you harm, not people who try and sometimes fail to entertain you."
If you don't like their stuff, don't read it. Hell, go ahead and complain about it (just don't beat a dead horse like certain people like to do) but to say "F-you" to a creator, to personally insult them or their intelligence, and to deliberately wish them harm or death? That is just the worst sort of comic book fan, hell the worst sort of person, out there.
In general I think its an internet problem. If you wouldn't say something to a creator's face, then don't write it online. It's that simple.

It is indeed quiet absurd. I'm of the opinion that you should only say things on the internet that you wouldn't mind saying to the persons face. It's one of the reasons I've started using my real name on sites. If I piss someone off they know exactly who did it! Kind of scary actually.
I don't think this is exclusive to comic fans in any way, it just appears worse because a) we're all pretty immersed in the scene so we see it more, and b) comic creators are by and large FAR more accessible than the creators of music, movies, tv, sports stars, etc...

I also think that we're a smaller fan base than other things like movies, tv shows, sports, etc. In those larger fan pools, the masses can often drown out/ignore the cranky ones.

The Anonymity of the internet makes people very brave. Also, you can post your opinion with a few button presses and mouse clicks and it can be read by a worldwide audience. It's EASY to do, so people do it. I don't think it's right, though. I have no problem with people offering an opinion, but I don't really like it when people get personal and spew hatred towards creators. There are creators i don't care for AS CREATORS. I'm not a fan of Humberto Ramos' art. But if somebody else likes it, that's fine. We all have different tastes. And I have nothing against him personally. And there are creators that I like who sometimes do things I don't like. I generally like Jeph Loeb. But I didn't like the whole "Wendihulk" thing. It was, in my opinion, REALLY bad. But I AM liking the Defenders/Offenders story so far. it's good, old-school, 80s Marvel goofy fun.
OK, I started babbling. But yeah, people should keep their critiques based on the work itself, and don't just trash things for the sake of trashing it. Tell us WHAT you didn't like about it and WHY.

I have a feeling I should defend my honor on this site....considering my name was brought up earlier.
But to be honest I have defended my opinions so many times I dont know what else to say about this discussion. Also.....I just dont know how to make my defense sound without making me look bad (not that I want to look bad; but well you know how my arguments usually turn out).
So...bash away, I can take the heat.

I know TNC was mentioned earlier, but my particular comments were more of a generic blanket statement, not aimed at anyone in particular. Just a kind of general comment on the internet in general. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Oh I know you werent talking about me in particular....that honor goes to miyamoto.
But to be honest it's all fair game. I know I've been way too trollish on this site at times. Trying to be a better poster, but obviously habits are hard to break. But pretty much your previous post sums up what I've been doing wrong on the site.
Although I should defend that (in the example of Bendis), I have critiqued why his work (in my eyes) have been medicore at best....but slight jabs I know I have taken.....Hence the Mr. Clean joke earlier :)

I'm pretty sure TNC is a problem in more places than iFanboy...
Personally, though, I love him. He keeps the boards interesting.
And far more often than is popular, I find I agree with him. Which, frankly, worries me. But whatev...

I like TNC on the boards because
A) he keeps it active
B) 90% of the time he is completely wrong so I pretty much just do or believe the exact opposite of what he says. Works out VERY well.

THis is is no way exclusive to comics. I mean, go to a simpsons forum, and see the hate they spew at Mike Scully.

1.) People still care enough about "The Simpsons" to spew hate at somebody behind it?
2.) Who's Mike Scully?

1) Yes cause the show has sank to the depths of hells
2) Was an executive producer for seasons 9-12; now just a regular producer.

If your talking about my internet life, then you would be wrong. I ususally dont go on many websites. I used to be on a wrestling forum all the time, cause that was my love before getting back into comics. But now it's just ifanboy all the time.....that's kinda bleak when you think about it....Thank you for saying I keep the board somewhat interesting, I like to think I am contributing somehow to this site.

A) I would love to know what I am right 10% of the time
B) There has to be times when your thinking 'Damnit....he's right'.....then I think you pout and get depressed over that fact lol

I know this isnt the place for it, but TNC was correct about Marvel Zombies 3. I enjoyed it much more than MZ2, and it actually has me hyped for other Fred Van Lente books.
Van Lente is fantastic. I need to go find copies of Comic Book Comics, I loved his work on Action Philosophers.

Oh no no no no....Praise for me? Perfect timing my man :)
But to be serious I do know my opinions are either in the very small minority or wrong at times. I try to be funny as well; that's probably where the trolling comes from....Trying to be funny when it comes out dickish.

Which I love. But maybe that's just me. :D

Some people are just nuts. But I think the comics to a large extent are centered around fandom. It's not like TV or sports, where there are a lot of casual watchers. With comics, most people seem to either love them or hate them, and if you hate em, then you just don't read them.
I do think that comic fans have an OCD quality about them that fans of a lot of other media don't. And while a few bad apples can really spoil things, this is probably the reason for the continued longevity of the industry.
